MLB: La Russa likely to stay with Cardinals

Cardinals manager Tony La Russa expects to return for a 13th season with St. Louis, and may commit to the team before it selects a new general manager.

La Russa told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in yesterday’s editions he’d be back barring complications in discussions with team chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. La Russa’s three-year deal expired at the end of the season.

NFL: Dolphins’ Green out for season

The Dolphins placed quarterback Trent Green on injured reserve, shelving him for the rest of the season following his second severe concussion in 13 months.

NBA: Lawyer: Williams’ sex consensual

Kings reserve center Justin Williams and his girlfriend had consensual sex with the woman who is accusing him of sexual assault, his attorney said.

Police said Thursday they were investigating allegations Williams had sexually assaulted a woman.

GOLF: Pettersson takes lead

In Scottsdale, Ariz., Carl Pettersson (13-under 197) shot a 6-under 64 to grab a one-stroke lead through three rounds of the Fry’s Electronics Open at Grayhawk Golf Club.

* In San Antonio, Tom Kite shot a 6-under 65 for a share of the second-round lead with Mark O’Meara in the AT&T Championship.

* In Gyeongju, South Korea, Suzann Pettersen of Norway shot par 72 for a one-stroke lead after the second round of the Hana Bank KOLON Championship.

TENNIS: Federer reaches Madrid final

In Madrid, Spain, defending champion Roger Federer will play David Nalbandian in the final of the Madrid Masters. Federer defeated Nicolas Kiefer 6-4, 6-4, and Nalbandian beat Novak Djokovic 6-4, 7-6 (4).

* In Zurich, Switzerland, Justine Henin rallied to defeat Nicole Vaidisova 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 and advanced to the final of the Zurich Open. Henin will play Tatiana Golovin, who defeated Francesca Schiavone 6-0, 6-4.

SOCCER: U.S. women settle for tie

In Albuquerque, N.M., Heather O’Reilly saved the U.S. women’s soccer team from a season-ending loss to Mexico, scoring the tying goal in the second half of a 1-1 draw.

RUGBY: South Africa wins World Cup

In Saint-Denis, France, South Africa won its second Rugby World Cup by beating defending champion England 15-6 in a final where all the points came on penalty kicks.

HIGH SCHOOLS: Rutgers nabs star

Boys & Girls High hoops star Pat Jackson, who recently transferred from Xaverian, verbally committed to Rutgers last night, another blow to St. John’s, which was recruiting the 6-foot-5 forward.
