LOVE FINALLY IN CONTENTION

PGA NOTES

Davis Love III, who stands at 4-under-par after two rounds at the PGA Championsip, is tied with Lee Westwood and Rory Sabbatini for third. He has not been truly in contention at a major since the 2003 British Open, won by Ben Curtis. Love, the 1997 PGA champion, has had some decent finishes in majors, but they’ve come from back-door strong final rounds.

Curtis, who was 3-under in the first round, finished 3-over yesterday and stands at even par. He wore his Giants’ garb the first two days and plans to switch to Jets over the weekend.

While Deepdale head pro Darrell Kestner made the cut, his two fellow area club pros didn’t fare as well. Miller Rivers’ Mark Meilke shot 77-73 to miss the cut and Muttontown’s Craig Thomas shot 80-79 on his way out. . . . Other notable players to miss the cut included Colin Montgomerie, 1993 U.S. Open champion at Baltusrol; Lee Janzen, who was given a special exemption by the PGA of America; and David Duval.

Notables still in contention include Vijay Singh (3-under), Retief Goosen (2-under), Stuart Appleby (3-under) and Jesper Parnevik (3-under).

Parnevik has been essentially AWOL when it comes to contending for the last couple of years. This season alone, Parnevik has played in 17 events and has only two top-20 finishes.
