DOG-DAY ADOPTIONS SLUMPING

City animal shelters have been slammed with thousands more dogs and cats than usual this summer – and fewer New Yorkers are adopting them.

As a result, even healthy, friendly puppies and kittens are facing death due to lack of cage space.

“The situation is absolutely desperate,” said Richard Gentles, operations director at Animal Care and Control. “There are hundreds of animals that need homes right now. There’s no time to wait – not even until next weekend.”

The shelter has reduced adoption fees this summer, to $30 per cat and $75 per dog, including spay/neuter, shots and a follow-up veterinarian visit. Call 311 for shelter addresses and hours.
