MAD. AVE. GEM HEIST

A posh Madison Avenue jeweler to the superstars lost $500,000 worth of vintage tiaras and antique jeweled hair combs yesterday to heady thieves with a thing for female finery.

Police responded to a 911 call at 2:25 a.m. and found the front door of Fred Leighton smashed open.

Fred Leighton, which bills itself as a place of “rare collectible jewels,” is a favorite pit stop for Hollywood hot shots on their way to the Oscar red carpet.

While the thieves scored a half-mil, they didn’t do as well as the tax man. Prosecutors said yesterday the store has paid $1 million in fines and restitution after pleading guilty to failing to collect city and state sales taxes.

It provided customers with phony papers indicating purchases had been shipped out of state.
