WALKER’S PROVING HIS NET WORTH

Once goaltender Tim Howard bolted to England for the chance of a lifetime, many thought the MetroStars’ promising season would turn to ruin.

But after losing their defensive backbone to Manchester United, the 8-5-1 MetroStars haven’t missed a beat. And it’s all due to the arrival of Jonny Walker, whose stellar play has not only held down the fort, but has given the MetroStars a serious lift as they push towards the playoffs.

Rumors about Howard’s eventual departure prompted MetroStars coach Bob Bradley to start thinking of a respectable replacement or face the consequences. Once the Howard rumor became reality, Bradley wasted no time contacting Walker, who had spent the last six years playing professionally in Chile.

After becoming the first American-born player to embark upon a successful career in South America, it was decision time for the Memphis, Tenn., native.

“There were a lot of mixed emotions. I had achieved so much in Chile,” Walker said. “I was playing for the biggest club [Colo Colo] with the biggest crowds and in the biggest games.

“But the opportunity to play in New York was an opportunity I just couldn’t let go by. I discussed it with my family and after being away for six years we decided it was the right move.”

Walker, who was named last week’s MLS Player of The Week, has been spectacular for his new team coming up with 36 saves since arriving on July 14. His 1-1-3 record has helped the MetroStars keep pace with today’s opponent-the first-place Chicago Fire (8-5-7).
