BROTHER: CWEBB LOVES NEW YORK

Jeff Webber knows how much his older brother, Chris, loves New York. Last month, Jeff told Chris he was going to propose to his girlfriend. CWebb told him to do it in New York. And that’s where Jeff Webber got engaged, in a midtown Manhattan hotel, two weeks ago.

Whether the Knicks and Chris Webber get engaged is still the mystery of summer. While there’s been growing sentiment Webber will remain in Sacramento, his brother doesn’t think so.

If Webber decides the Knicks are his first choice when he becomes a free agent Sunday, he doesn’t want them to give up the farm in a sign-and-trade to get him. Unlike two other teams on his wish list, under-the-cap Detroit and Houston, the Knicks would have to pull off a sign-and-trade to obtain Webber. Orlando, another club in whom Webber has interest, is trying to get under the cap to sign him.

“I don’t think Chris wants them to give up both Allan Houston and Marcus Camby,” Jeff Webber said. “He doesn’t want to play center. He’d want to play with Camby. If they keep the nucleus of the team, that would be great. Chris, [Latrell Sprewell] and Camby would be a nice trio.”

According to Jeff, his older brother prefers to play with a veteran point guard and one other perennial All-Star. The Kings don’t have either, though Peja Stojakovic is on his way to All-Star status.

CWebb is also hoping the Kings upgrade their point-guard position. Jason Williams has asked for a trade and the Kings are working on it.
