PREZ GOES TO BAT FOR ROSE — & CHELSEA

WASHINGTON — President Clinton says Pete Rose belongs in the Baseball Hall of Fame, he’d support daughter Chelsea if she wants to get into politics — and he’s not divorcing his wife.

“I’d like to see it worked out because [Rose] brought a lot of joy to the game, and he gave a lot of joy to people and he’s paid a price — God knows, he’s paid a price,” Clinton told People magazine. Rose, the former Cincinnati Red great and all-time hits leader, was banned for betting on baseball.

The president also says he’d support Chelsea, a Stanford University student, if she ever wanted to get into politics.

“I certainly would if she wanted to, [but] only if she wanted to,” Clinton said in the interview.

In a roundabout way, Clinton — who was nearly tossed out of office after an affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky — denied that he and First Lady Hillary Clinton are getting ready to divorce.

“A lot of what has been said is not true, including the headline in the Enquirer,” the president told People, referring to a National Enquirer headline that said, “Hillary Demands Divorce.”
