This aspect of his literary heritage is discussed from the perspective of the theological debates during the time of Theodore the Studite’s life – not only the Iconoclastic Controversy which repeatedly surfaced in his writings, but also the debate on the predetermination of the terms of human life. A focus will be made on the extent the turbulent events of his life and polemics he was engaged in made an impact on his homiletical and liturgical works.

The Leontian concepts, such as enhypostasized substance, distinction between the principle of substance and mode of existence, as well as "relational" ontology of reversed unions and distinctions at the levels of substances and hypostases was adopted by Maximus the Confessor and John of Damascus in their polemical application of Neo-Chalcedonian Christology, as well as the by the Iconophiles of the Second Iconoclasm in support of the circumscribability of Christ.

A tentative reconstruction of the Transfiguration scene which the inscription might have accompanied is proposed, and the wider exegetical context of the Transfiguration, primarily, the interplay of the theological ideas of the Crucifixion, Resurrection, and Second Coming of Christ, embedded in this event are examined against the doctrines of the Byzantine Iconoclasts.

The philosophical argument in the Dialogue seems to be a practical application of philosophical doctrines formulated in the Dialectica. From a wider perspective of anti-Manichean polemics used in part for instructional purposes for students of philosophy and theology in Late Antiquity, the conclusion is made that the purpose of the Dialogue was aimed not so much against the Manichaean cosmogony and cosmology, but against the Manichaean theodicy which might have been attractive to some Christians of John’s times.

A number of parallels to the doctrine in the fragments have been identified, including Aristotle, Theodoret of Cyrrhus, Basil of Caesarea, and John Philoponus. The origins of this argument have been traced to Origen’s pedagogical principle of “revelatory proportionality”, which also appears in similar contexts in Dionysius the Areopagite and Hypatius of Ephesus. This argument proved to be too weak and was not brought up again by the Iconophiles. Instead, in their apology of religious images, they followed up with the Christological response of the Palestinian Iconophile John of Damascus to a different set of Iconoclastic arguments, which also stemmed from Origen’s first coherent system of Christian gnosis.

Several solutions were given to the problem of misfortunes which might befall a person, since they could not result from the actions of a good God: from ultimate non-involvement of God into the voluntary actions of humans, to pedagogical temporary "stepping aside" by God to demonstrate the futility of human actions which go against the best predestined course of life, to active divine intervention as "bitter medicine" for the correction of human wrongdoings and putting an end to uncorrected sin. These problems are discussed in the treatise On the Predestined
