This coupled with other appalling employment conditions then prevalent during the colonial era, inspired dissatisfied workers to cultivate sense of Collectivism, Solidarity, and the culture of resistance and group agitation in an effort to alleviate their plight. This was evidenced by the frequent strike waves that swept across the Country in reaction against poor working conditions. In 1892, during the construction of a military barracks, the labour force had to go on strike because of reduction of their wages from 1 shilling to 9 pence. Most of the ringleaders of the strike were later absorbed into the police force as special constables and paid a rate of 1 shilling 3 pence per day as a strategy to prevent the recurrence of strike.
On 1st June 1911, about 300 workers in the railway department went on strike for several days over 9 pence a day wages. The colonial government reacted violently to quell down the unrest by using firearms, which left 2 of the strikers seriously wounded.

Trade unions originally had difficulty in establishing their legal position. Their legal existence was eventually based on Trade Union Laws enacted between 1919 -1950, with subsequent legislation incorporating and maintaining the original protection of their immunities from criminal prosecution for breach of contract, agreement or trust.
