Individuals who read develop larger vocabularies and acquire more general and domain-specific knowledge compared to those whose who do not or cannot read (Cunningham & Stanovich, 1998; Krashen, 1993). Reading is a requisite skill and activity for many secondary school subjects, including science. Teachers assign students to read textbooks and other sources, including worksheets and written instructions.

Within reading activities in classroom settings, pedagogic language routines take specific forms (Bernstein, 1990; Cazden, 1988; Wells, 1999). Students' learning in the classroom is tied to these language routines that are set by the teacher and used by peers to question and respond to new information (Lemke, 1985; Tharp & Gallimore, 1988).

In the first year of the study, children were provided with rewards, such as pins and certificates, for reading books. The schoolwide goal was for each child to read 30 books during the school year. Concerns about adverse effects of providing extrinsic rewards for book reading led to removal of the curriculum the following year.

The questionnaire was then administered to 116 undergraduates. Results indicated that although students were uncertain regarding the uses made of teaching evaluations, they nevertheless reported taking the opportunity to evaluate their professors seriously.

The journals were the Journal of Educational Psychology (JEP), Cognition & Instruction (CI), the Educational Psychologist (EP), Contemporary Educational Psychology (CEP), and Educational Psychology Review (EPR). Because educational psychologists publish their scholarly work in many journals, an exhaustive analysis of all journals is impractical.

Although there is little research on such students' reading and studying skills, many of these students have characteristics that put them at risk for academic failure, including poor academic performance in high school, poor study skills, and low standardized test scores.

Survey respondents were asked about their participation in six types of informal learning activities, from reading books to using computers to attending conventions. Respondents with the lowest educational attainment were found to be least likely to participate in informal learning. Age, ethnic/racial, and gender differences in informal learning were also observed.

Among the significant characteristics of reading practices are that they are communicative activities that promote various forms of individual development (eg, cognitive, social, aesthetic). Social contexts shape the purposes for reading, and, in turn, these purposes determine the subject matter and texts selected by readers (Guthrie & Greaney, 1991). Literate adults engage in many ...
