Escaping Winter

Earth has been ravaged by wars, and the damage to the environment seems irreparable. The climate is decaying rapidly, and it's not getting any better. Time to abandon this planet and escape the endless winters.

In this game, you control a colony of survivors and help them endure by choosing from one of three cards every turn. These allow you to place improvements, which will help you produce the food you need to survive, and the gold you need to do research. Research allows you to choose from better cards, and eventually, place down rocket parts. Assemble all three rocket parts, load them up with the required food and fuel, and leave this doomed planet behind.

Features:

  • 3 difficulty settings
  • 33 cards divided over 5 tiers
  • Procedural map generation
  • An endless mode in case you do want to stay on Earth
  • Maybe frogs?

Credits:

Sprites, game design and programming by Neopolis. Title screen by Raykins. See in-game for detailed credits including the public source audio and fonts

Theme:

The jam themes were "Mundane tasks" and "Decay". The idea is that everything you do is relatively mundane - overseeing farming, mining, etc, but the threat of the rapidly decaying climate makes it exciting.

Challenges:

One Button - Technically playable with left mouse button only, so it's tablet compatible (hotkeys exist though)
Infinity - The game allows you to keep playing as long as you like even after you win

This game is lots of fun! I would complain that it's very luck based, but the scrap forge evens it out!

I like this!

Also here's my best run.... on Blizzard difficulty! ;J

I dunno why my settlers decided to settle on the water but I took advantage of that lmao

Speaking of the settlers - there seems to be a bug where after you have about 3 or 4 settlers, they start to settle exactly where you place them. That means that you can start to place them anywhere on the map (this run ^ I placed one by the casino in the corner and one accidentally in the water right next to my fire base - it was there that I noticed that could start placing them anywhere in this run)  - so the two in the middle of the sea, and the one in the very left corner were the settlers that wandered there by themselves.

In a previous run (that was my heavy snowfall run): I stacked a bunch of settlers ON TOP of my inn XD. I didn't place any in the water that time cause I didn't even know you could place them in the water or that they could place themselves in the water lol.

- Guess my settlers built themselves some raft houses xD

Thanks for the comment, glad you enjoyed it! Yeah, the Settlers aren't as robust as I would like... The way it works is they head for the furthest empty corner, and if there isn't one, they usually just kinda... settle immediately, even on water. Ideally I'd let you control where they go, but I mostly just wanted a quick-and-dirty way to let you cross large swaths of land.

Very fun game to play. In the beginning it can be very difficult if the people do not know English, but with time you will get used to it and it will get more fun, a pity that there is no translation into Portuguese.

Alright, I am finding it nigh impossible to beat this game on Heavy Blizzard. I have gotten close but eventually, the food consumption is just too much. Played it what has to be close to ten times now, lol.

Haha, yeah, it's not easy! As far as I know only about 3 or 4 people have managed to beat it, and it requires quite some luck. Getting an early Biodome with lots of deer (no hunters), a Sun Lamp + Corn field, and/or a lucky temple at level 6 seem to be the main routes to surviving Heavy Blizzard.

the art style reminds me of stardew valley

I really enjoyed this! After each loss, I just wanted to play once more! I love the simple design, and each build-up to winter as you try and find the most efficient way of earning enough food to survive, I had to stop myself from playing it for too long!

Good work, here. Maybe I missed it, but maybe stick in something saying what our food and gold income are?

(+1)

Thanks! Sadly there's not really a way to see your income, considering more unreliable stuff like Hunters, Fish Traps, Casinos make it so that it's not really easy to predict. Maybe I could just add how much you earned last turn though, thanks for the suggestion.

this game is really good for the time frame :D. I really enjoyed all of the options you had and all of the different cards with tier systems. really feels like you put a bunch of time and effort in to this. I love it well done! it barley feels like a game jam game and more of a beta for a really good game.
