Essential Albums
- With their work on the 2016 movie La La Land, songwriters Benji Pasek and Justin Paul breathed new life into a form verging on extinction: The non-animated, non-adaptation movie musical. Even compared to pop hybrids like Saturday Night Fever and Moulin Rouge!, the duo’s follow-up, the P.T. Barnum biopic The Greatest Showman, was an almost unprecedented success: A multi-platinum movie-musical soundtrack? That wasn’t just for kids? It helped the Pasek and Paul had good ingredients to work with: Though most people knew him as Wolverine, Showman star Hugh Jackman had begun his career in musicals, and had even won a Tony Award for The Boy From Oz. Co-stars Zac Efron and Zendaya, meanwhile, had their Disney bona fides, while Keala Settle spent nearly a decade on Broadway. And the music delivered an undiluted shot of positivity that bridged old-school showmanship with modern dance-pop and messages of self-acceptance (“This Is Me”) and perseverance (“Rewrite the Stars”) that had special resonance with the LGBTQ community. They’re still nowhere near Rodgers and Hart, nor Lerner and Loewe. But give Pasek and Paul some time—they’re off to a good start.
- Ben Platt, as the titular hypersensitive teen, artfully carries the show in the debut musical scored by La La Land’s Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. Emotionally authentic strings-and-guitar-propelled songs—particularly the out-of-control Act 1 finale, “You Will Be Found”—drive a story about loneliness that leads to an Internet-shaking misunderstanding. The soaring “For Forever” and righteous, rock-driven anger of Rachel Bay Jones (as Ben’s mother, in “Good for You”) help give this musical the emotional heft of a great pop album.

About Justin Noble Paul
An Oscar-winning lyricist and Tony- and Emmy-winning composer/lyricist, Justin Paul is known almost exclusively for the output of his songwriting partnership with Benj Pasek. After meeting as fledgling musical theater majors in the mid-2000s, the pair made their Broadway debut with A Christmas Story: The Musical in 2012. Quickly building a reputation for heartfelt lyrics and both wistful and rousing melodies, the duo won their first Oscar for "City of Stars" from La La Land and their first Tony and Grammy Awards for Broadway's Dear Evan Hansen, both in 2017. In another first, they made their debut at the top of the Billboard 200 in 2018 with the soundtrack to the film The Greatest Showman, which featured their original songs. The team completed the EGOT in 2024 with an Emmy for their song "Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It?" from season three of Only Murders in the Building.
