Mark Pritchard is a career shapeshifter, pursuing a variety of projects while exploring well beyond the confines of the dance music on which he cut his teeth. Now based in Sydney, the English composer/producer made his name with his work with Tom Middleton in the ambient dance act Global Communication in the early 1990s, before mining cosmic hip-hop with Dave Brinkworth in Harmonic 33, sumptuous jazz and pop on his own as Troubleman and a dizzying spectrum of styles with Steve Spacek in Africa HiTech. After using his own name on a few scattered releases, Pritchard levelled up with the 2016 opus Under the Sun, a more expansive and less rhythmically underpinned collection that featured vocal turns from Thom Yorke, fellow polymath Bibio, psych-folk artist Linda Perhacs and art-rap icon Beans. He ventured even further afield from there, via collaborations with The Space Lady and Gregory Whitehead, before returning to more modest, homespun productions such as 2020’s texture-rich “Be Like Water”.
