Welcome to The Works, the playlist featuring the latest and best from the world of classical music. At the top of this week’s playlist is a charming arrangement of a well-loved piece by Fritz Kreisler, included by violinist María Dueñas in her album Paganini: 24 Caprices out this week: “My new album is centred around Paganini and the world of caprices,” Dueñas tells Apple Music Classical. “I wanted to show how different musical ideas can come together, which led me to include Fritz Kreisler’s ‘Caprice Viennois’. Kreisler was famous for his lovely, charming compositions and his revolutionary violin technique, especially his use of constant vibrato. He wrote ‘Caprice Viennois’ in 1910—it’s a perfect example of his style, and it became one of his most loved pieces. “Choosing a guitar arrangement of Kreisler’s piece for my album feels especially right because Paganini wasn’t just a violin virtuoso; he was also an accomplished guitarist. In fact, 77 of his 134 opuses include the guitar. He often played both instruments in his concerts, sometimes even swapping instruments with guitarist Luigi Legnani during performances! “I really love how Antoine Fougeray’s arrangement for violin and guitar brings a new perspective to Kreisler’s music, highlighting the dialogue between those two instruments, and I’m so thrilled to be performing this track with guitarist Raphaël Feuillâtre. To me, it adds a completely new dimension to the piece, and I’m excited for listeners to discover it in a different light.” The Works is updated regularly by our editors, so if you find a piece of music or performance you love, make sure you add it to your library.
