Theory of action framework as developed by Argyris and Schon [1] was employed to critically analy... more Theory of action framework as developed by Argyris and Schon [1] was employed to critically analyse the practice of information literacy in 11 academic libraries in the US. In theory of action, contrasting theories are explicated, namely espoused theories and theories-in-use and congruence between theories is a basis for effective practice. In the study, espoused theories of action were examined by investigating conceptions and beliefs of information literacy as seen in varied policy documents of libraries recognized by the academic library community for exemplary instruction resources. Theories-in-use were identified by analyzing practice via 150 online tutorials developed and utilized by these libraries. Comparative, thematic analysis revealed varying levels of congruence between theories. Espoused theories coalesced around themes of knowledge creation and lifelong learning while theories-in-use emphasized engagement with information sources. The paper distills select methodologies and findings and illustrates the usefulness of theory of action for investigating information literacy practice.

In the Caribbean, recent curriculum transformation and renewal have focused on benchmarking North American, and British traditions and practice, in which issues of technology and information were emphasized as against historical considerations, and there remain gaps in the important area of cultural competence (Montiel Overall, 2009; Ouvrard-Prettol, 2017) especially among academic librarians. A new narrative is needed to address this knowledge gap, since for Caribbean LIS professionals, this void relates not to ‘other’ marginalized, diverse cultures, but their own history and culture. The online tutorial has emerged as a ubiquitous representation of information literacy instructio... more The online tutorial has emerged as a ubiquitous representation of information literacy instruction and often is the visible face of these programs. Academic libraries currently boast an expanding array of tutorials which are presented as effective alternatives and supplements to face-toface instruction. A growing body of literature exists about the design and evaluation of the online tutorial (Atwater-Singer & Metcalf, 2006; Dewald, 1999; Hrycaj, 2005; Tronstad, Phillips, Garcia, & Harlow, 2009). Typically, evaluations focus on the quality of the tutorial or its effect on student learning. Quality questions ask whether it is engaging, easy to navigate, and upto-date. Effectiveness questions ask whether students mastered the content or learned as much from the online tutorial as from a live class.

However, cost constraints present a real challenge to institutions, especially in the developing world where digitization projects must compete for scarce resources with many other pressing services. In the competition for resources special collections sometimes play second fiddle to immediate services, for example user facilities.The Library of the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, faced with limited and declining financial resources, yet recognizing the value of its growing but hidden special collections especially to scholarship at the university, as well as to the cultural and historical significance of the Caribbean region, sought cost-effective and innovative solutions to address the situation and to go ‘global’ with these collections.This paper uses ...

Informal observation by University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona librarians and anecdotal evidenc... more Informal observation by University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona librarians and anecdotal evidence from UWI faculty suggested that information literacy skills among students at the UWI Mona are inadequate for university level. Results of an informal survey of IL in select high school libraries in Jamaica indicated school IL programmes were not preparing students adequately. Therefore, the authors propose forging alliances between the University Mona Library and high school libraries to improve IL programmes in the high schools. The paper draws on three recent successful cases of collaboration between the UWI Mona library and high schools. It ends with some recommendations.
