One of the most common challenges faced by English as Second language (ESL)and English as Foreign... more One of the most common challenges faced by English as Second language (ESL)and English as Foreign Language (EFL) writers in higher education is in composition writing. The researchers observed that students from different language backgrounds used different writing strategies when composing in L2, such as using L1 in order to produce a text in L2. This study investigated to what extent Language Switching (L-S) occurs, and the effect of its occurrence at various cognitive stages among local (ESL) and international (EFL) students. The study adapted the Cognitive Process Model by Flower and Hayes (1981) which introduces the cognitive processes involved while writing a composition. Four subjects were selected based on their rich verbalization to concurrently perform a think aloud protocol (TAP) as they wrote an argumentative essay in English, and to record their cognitive processes as to make explicit what is implicitly present in their mind. Needs Analysis is deemed important in second language investigations in higher learning and profe... more Needs Analysis is deemed important in second language investigations in higher learning and professional workplace. This study analyzed 14 double blind peer reviewed journal articles on the use of various research methods in analyzing language needs in English for Specific Purposes. Two common themes are identified: English for Academic Purposes and English for Occupational Purposes. The review identified qualitative methods as the dominant methodology used in analyzing needs. The paper asserts the use of data triangulation to determine a better yield in results and findings. This study suggests the interest and curiosity in conducting a study should not only focus on the outcome of the research conducted on subjects and respondents, but also in self-experiencing the tasks and situation of learners and users of specific language.

These students sat for the SPM examination in the year 2009 and their English language perceptions towards learning mathematics and science in English is also investigated. It is seen as important and relevant to examine the factors that govern students' choice of a particular language in a particular setting. Why do they choose to use one code rather than another, and why do they prefer to use this code in examinations are the questions that this study has attempted to answer. Language choice is a very complex issue and the factors which might influence language choices are equally complicated because the study of language choice is often linked to other factors like ethnicity, multilingualism, code-switching, language maintenance and shift. The researcher noticed a prevailing pattern in their journal writing, where most of them were unable to construct proper sentences, making too many grammatical errors and also lacking in vocabulary. These factors have eventually restricted them from expressing their ideas clearly and effectively in their journal writing.
