Wikimedia Foundation/Legal/Committee appointments

Volunteer committees are a large part of what makes the Wikimedia community, a community. Volunteers in our community do any number of jobs, from editing content, to organizing events, all the way up to supporting the community through leadership roles. These leadership roles are all around you—administrators, advisors, stewards and members of volunteer committees.

Each year, several of the movement’s committees seek new volunteers, typically from October through December.

Applications for the committees open on October 14, 2024. Applications for the Affiliations Committee close on November 18, 2024, and applications for the Ombuds commission and the Case Review Committee close on December 2, 2024. Several conversation hours will be available to discuss these opportunities:

Submitting your application

Applications for AffCom are public, you can fill out your application using the template here. After submitting your application, please email the Committee Support Team at cst@wikimedia.org to confirm your application submission. You will receive instructions about the next steps you will need to take, including verification of your identity. Applications for AffCom will remain open for comments from the time of individual submission until December 2, 2024.

If you are interested in applying to the Ombuds commission or the Case Review Committee [(TBD) please submit an application using this form]. The applications for the Ombuds commission and the Case Review Committee will not be posted on Meta-wiki.

Members of all three committees are required to sign the Confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information and must be willing to comply with the appropriate Wikimedia Foundation board policies (such as the access to non-public information policy and the Foundation privacy policy). These positions require a high degree of discretion and trust. Members must also be over 18 years of age.

  • Your username and the link to your user page
  • Your primary projects
  • Languages you speak/write and fluency level (please make sure to include English)
  • Any experience you have participating on committees, whether movement or non-movement
  • Your thoughts on what skills, experience, or perspective you could bring to the committee, if appointed
  • Any other information you think is relevant
  • Your acknowledgement and commitment to the time and effort required for the respective committee’s work
  • Ombuds Commission only: any experience you have with the Checkuser or Oversight tools
