My Independence is Not About You

How life-altering events changed my perspective on romantic love

Have you ever wondered why a woman might thrive in her independence? That possibly, it’s personal, and has nothing to do with men?

Here’s my story of loss, reclamation, and relational nuance, when it came to mine.

I grew up knowing I could have a different life than the average woman.

Luckily, until my late 20s, this was only in the periphery.

Due to being born with a genetic (albeit mild) disease, the only issue I was facing was managing epilepsy through medication, which worked, until it didn’t.

It took a while for my medical team to unpack the solution, which ended up resulting in awake brain surgery in September 2018. This provided me with a complete change in life experience, due to now being five years seizure-free!

By medicine’s standards: CURED.

Before this time, I experienced the most humbling dependence on my friends and family.

I had no idea if I would have a normal life again.

After my surgery, I had to prove that I was seizure-free for six months to get my license back. When I finally reached that point, my neurologist filled out the…
