The Many Paths To Motherhood

I have become far more open to all the different ways that I might become a mother

For as long as I can remember I have wanted to be a mother. I knew this from a young age and my desire for motherhood has never wavered — it feels like a calling, a vocation.

That doesn’t mean that my vision of motherhood hasn’t changed throughout my life though. While I’ve always wanted to be a mom someday I would definitely say that over the years I have become far more open to all the different ways that I might become a mother.

When I was younger I wasn’t exactly giving much thought to the topic, aside from knowing that I wanted to have kids some day. I definitely knew I wanted to be a mom, but that someday felt pretty far away so it wasn’t really top of mind.

That being said, if you’d ask my teenage self what my path to motherhood would look like I’d probably have said something pretty traditional.

Love, marriage, baby carriage. That’s how it goes, right?

By the time I reached my twenties I had basically given up on the love and marriage part of the story.
