Summer time is about getting outside, hiking in the sunshine, and resting under cool green cedar trees. Eating blackberries off the thorny vines and running through icy waves at the beach. Sleeping on top of the covers with the fan on. Oh, summer, how we love you.

The heat wave is moving back in to Oregon tomorrow, and it’s a great time to write. I plan to crank up the air con and drink iced coffee until my ears buzz. Over 90 degrees, I’ll need to set up misters for my hens. I throw a fine spray of water over the hydrangea bushes, and the girls stay cool under the leafy green foliage.

This is the best summer I’ve had for a while, and I’ve had such fun watching stars at night. During the day, we pitch apples to the cattle, watch the birdlife around the pond, and I work remotely — so I’m inside and outside.

My dogs and I pick the wild berries, and I eat every third one. My two labs love berries! My old yellow lab Tegan has to wait until the late, cool evening, as she can’t tolerate heat. We do the slow-walk, and her sweet muzzle kisses berries off my palm. I love that dog.
