Modern vegetarians and vegans have numerous digital tools and websites for planning their next vacation or trip. The origins of these important information sources for anyone traveling while maintaining a plant based diet begin with the history of tourism and entwines with early vegetarian publications. Travel for educational purposes in Britain was a well-established tradition by the 19th century. Sight-seeing and seaside destinations within Britain were standard destinations for holiday-making. In the United States, the concept of modern tourism began in the 1860s, particularly after the Civil War. The boom of the travel industry coincided with the formation of vegetarian organizations in the U.S. and Great Britain. Vegetarians also traveled for both leisure and practical purposes, however, they faced an additional stumbling block — traveling while still maintaining a plant based diet. Finding accommodations for vegetarian dining and accessing plant based food away from home were regular topics in publications for vegetarians.
