Reading Aloud

Why is it a big deal?

Having a great book read aloud well is comparable to being served a gourmet feast as the guest of honor. The guest may not prepare the meal or bring it to the table. The guest may not clean up afterwards, but lingers a bit over dessert with pleasant company and enjoyable conversation. He is surrounded by a well-designed setting of white tablecloth, fresh flowers as centerpiece, crystal stemware, and soft light.

Reading a great book to oneself is also good, but in a different way. It means that at some point you learned to make a good sandwich. Then you made scrambled eggs and macaroni and cheese. Now, you may cook gourmet dishes, and enjoy them and have friends over to share. It’s wonderful! But it is not the same as being the guest.

Biographical sketches are a problem. That said, my home state is Mississippi and I'm still there. Poetry is my language and protrudes into any prose I begin.
