Own Your Feelings and Feel Good While Doing It

Your feelings and needs are your responsibility.

“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” — Eleanor Roosevelt

Actually, no one can make you feel anything without your consent. Your feelings are yours and therefore they are your responsibility.

Here’s how to own your feelings and feel good while doing it.

What you allow is what will continue

Someone can only make you feel badly if you allow them to. And if you continually allow others to affect and influence the way you feel, you’re going to have a bad time.

When you realize that your feelings are up to you and entirely within your control, things get a lot easier. You’re less angry or upset with others, because you realize it’s pointless to let someone else steal your joy. Being angry and upset doesn’t accomplish anything and it doesn’t make you feel better about the situation. Chances are, you feel terrible and the other person continues about their life unaffected.

A mantra that helps me with this is, “I cannot control what you do. I can only control what I do.” (Fans of The Office will remember Andy Bernard saying this after his anger management classes.)
