When my ultra-running friends plan something, I know it’s going to be hard, but I also know I can’t resist joining them. Their plan this time: a fastpack of 11 days through the Pyrenees.

Fastpacking is about traveling as lightly as possible, carrying only the absolute essentials. Traveling light allows you to cover greater distances compared to regular hikers.

The goal is to run/hike around 300 kilometers (186 miles) with about 17,000 meters (55,000+ feet) of vertical gain through the French and Spanish parts of the Pyrenees, crossing Andorra as well.

A few weeks after receiving the invitation, I find myself in Aulus-les-Bains, a small village in the middle of the Pyrenees, ready to embark on an 11-day mountain adventure.

An 8-kilogram (18-pound) backpack containing my sleeping kit, a cooking kit, some food, a first aid kit, and one pair of spare clothes should keep me alive.
