This multi-sectorial and interdisciplinary research project brings together over 45 researchers to explore issues of social inclusion and social participation of people with disabilities, as they arrive and use the shopping complex. Within the context of a Living Lab, researchers implement various research projects from diverse research paradigms and methodological perspectives. While the research method for the overarching project is within the general framework of participatory action research, all researchers use clinical, basic and experimental forms of research (Friedman, 2003) to move forward the goals and research streams defined at the outset. Abstract Over the past decade, research evidence on the sensory motor challenges associated with ... more Abstract Over the past decade, research evidence on the sensory motor challenges associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) raises questions about the unilateral focus on psychosocial criteria for the diagnostic category and shifts attention from perspectives that focus solely on behavioral deficits towards a more embodied perspective of the spectrum. The focus on embodiment in autism research forges a link between psychosocial deficits and sensory motor challenges. Further, sensory motor actions and experiences are the foundation for cognition, emotions and communication within conceptualizations of embodiment. This unifies theoretical divisions between body and mind. This shift of perspective raises the question of whether or not there is a gap between emergent research knowledge and its implementation in practice. Thus, the aim of this scoping review was to understand the extent of research on interventions focused on the use of sensory motor based or movement based interventions (MBI) to target psychosocial outcomes for children with autism. Using a combination of a descriptive numerical analysis and a thematic analysis of fourteen studies, this scoping review provides the preliminary evidence of the efficacy of MBIs for children with ASD and questions actual research practices to measure psychosocial changes.

This article presents a psycholinguistic investigation probing the recognition of derived words w... more This article presents a psycholinguistic investigation probing the recognition of derived words with the suffix -dzis in Modern Greek. We investigate the mode of lexical access, as well as the effect that features such as [±concrete], carried by the stem of the derived words, may have on word recognition. Participants (native speakers of Modern Greek) were divided into two age groups in order to investigate possible differences in their performance in two experiments, one on-line and one off-line. Results show that derived words in -dzis are accessed through decomposition. Furthermore, the features [±concrete] of the stem do appear to play a role in the computation of derived words. Finally, age-related differences are found to exist, at least during on-line word recognition.

Locomotor adaptations, as required for community walking, rely heavily on the sense of vision. Li... more Locomotor adaptations, as required for community walking, rely heavily on the sense of vision. Little is known, however, about gaze behavior during pedestrian interactions while ambulating in the community. Our objective was to characterize gaze behavior while walking in a community environment and interacting with pedestrians of different locations and directions. Twelve healthy young individuals were assessed as they walked in a shopping mall from a pre-set location to a goal located 20 m ahead. Eye movements were recorded with a binocular eye-tracker and temporal distance factors were assessed using wearable sensors from a full-body motion capture system. Participants exhibited more numerous and longer gaze episodes on pedestrians (GEP) that were walking in the same direction as themselves vs. those that were in the opposite direction. The relative durations of GEPs, however, showed no significant differences between pedestrians walking in the same vs. opposite direction. Longer durations of GEPs were also observed for centrally located pedestrians compared to those located on either side, but this was the case only for pedestrians that were walking in the same direction as participants. In addition, pedestrians in the centre, and even more so those on the right, were fixated at farther distances compared to those on the left. Results indicate that healthy young individuals modulate their gaze behavior as a function of the location and direction of pedestrians when ambulating in a community environment. The observed modulation is interpreted as being caused by an interplay between collision risk, pedestrian visibility, presence of leaders and social conventions (right-sided circulation). Present results also establish baseline measures for the quantification of defective visuomotor strategies in individuals with mobility disorders.

Previous studies on compound processing have argued that compounds are represented in two ways, as whole units or decomposed. While other compound properties like headedness, constituency, and θ-role saturation have been examined both from a theoretical linguistic and a psycholinguistic standpoint, the phonological properties of compound words and in particular, stress assignment, have not yet been examined from a psycholinguistic perspective.
