ABSTRACT Availability of freshwater is the prime mover of the human life activities. The advances... more ABSTRACT Availability of freshwater is the prime mover of the human life activities. The advances in desalination technologies clearly show that desalinated water can be used as a substitute for freshwater to be used as potable water. A breakthrough in reverse osmosis costs has been reached, particularly in decreasing energy consumption. The introduction of nanotechnology in the membrane manufacture has resulted in reducing the volume of rejected brine which in turn alleviates the brine disposal issue. Several recent studies show that desalinated water for development of isolated areas is economically competitive to transportation of freshwater by pipeline. The introduction of solar energy to power desalination process has given a new dimension to the expansion of desalination technology. Several studies show the importance of solar desalination in countries suffering from freshwater shortage, particularly in isolated areas. This chapter presents an overview of desalination technologies with emphasis on solar energy-driven units. Some case studies are highlighted. The chapter concludes with a discussion of future avenues in solar desalination.

In this work, one of these technologies is investigated by creating a gaseous cavity, in which the high-speed underwater vehicles flow, to reduce the drag forces acting on these vehicles. A supercavitating flow over different nose projectile shapes is studied numerically and experimentally to understand the effect of the projectile nose shape on the supercavitating flow behavior. The numerical simulations are accomplished by using a commercial code named ESI-CFD through an unstructured mesh. Also, supercavity flow characteristics are investigated experimentally over the projectile body by using a high-speed camera. The numerical results are validated with other experimental results, where the stages of growth of the cavity over the different shapes projectiles are distinguished briefly and the existence of wake vortex is observed. This paper presents some experimental results of erosive wear in a centrifugal slurry pump. The e... more This paper presents some experimental results of erosive wear in a centrifugal slurry pump. The erosion rate of a centrifugal pump impeller is measured by the weighing method. In this part of the study only the erosion of the impeller is considered. Two different concentrations of coarse sand are used. The effect of speed of rotation is also investigated. The experimental results show the correlation between the erosive wear development, and solid particle concentration. The objective of this investigation is to study the relation between erosive wear in a centrifugal pump impeller and solid particle concentration.

A mathematical model was developed, the model treats looped network. A computer program is developed in order to facilitate water distribution system design, which satisfies all constraints including pipe diameter and nodal pressure. An optimization technique is developed in order to evaluate the optimum network configuration and cost, the parameters are pipe diameter, flow rate, corresponding pressure and hydraulic losses. A non-linear technique was adopted in the solution. The model uses the sequential unconstrained minimization technique (SUMT) of Fiacco and McCormick (1964) to solve the optimal design of network. The adopted optimization technique decreases the required number of design iterations which for example may reach 1.48 billion iterations for a network with 8 pipes and a set of 14 available commercial pipes. External penalty functions have been used to convert a constrained optimization problem into an unconstrained problem for GA-based optimization. The success of the genetic algorithm application to the design of water distribution systems depends on the choice of the penalty function. The optimal design of water distribution systems is a constrained non-linear optimization problem. Constraints (for example, the minimum pressure requirements at the nodes) are generally handled within genetic algorithm optimization by introducing a penalty cost function. The optimal solution is found when the pressures at some nodes are close to the minimum required pressure. The goal of an adaptive penalty function is to change the value of the penalty draw-down coefficient during the search allowing exploration of infeasible regions to find optimal building blocks, while preserving the feasibility of the final solution. The injection of air or exhaust gas stabilizes cavities behind spoilers. The spoiler system is tested experimentally to understand the parameters affecting the flow field and bubble formation around the spoiler. These parameters are the spoiler inclination angle, rise of floor angle and injected air position. The spoiler inclination angle effect is studied in this paper. The images of flow field variation and bubble formation are recorded with scientific video camera and compared with the computed flow field at different conditions and time sequence. The use of micro-channels in order to cool modern high speed electronic circuits is one of the te... more The use of micro-channels in order to cool modern high speed electronic circuits is one of the techniques frequently adopted in current practice. A burst of publications in this area has been observed in the last decade. However, modeling of fluid flow and heat transfer in micro-channels is still an open problem. In fact, many deviations have been experimentally observed between well established correlations used for conventional normally sized channels and the behavior of microchannels. These deviations increase as the channel size decreases. In this work, observed experimental deviations are first listed, followed by a critical review of different hypotheses advanced in the literature to explain them. One of these hypotheses is thoroughly developed in order to build a model that explains both the orders of magnitudes and the trends of observed phenomena.
