Events containing one or more top quarks produced with additional prompt leptons are used to sear... more Events containing one or more top quarks produced with additional prompt leptons are used to search for new physics within the framework of an effective field theory (EFT). The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 41.5 fb−1 of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the LHC, collected by the CMS experiment in 2017. The selected events are required to have either two leptons with the same charge or more than two leptons; jets, including identified bottom quark jets, are also required, and the selected events are divided into categories based on the multiplicities of these objects. Sixteen dimension-six operators that can affect processes involving top quarks produced with additional charged leptons are considered in this analysis. A search for new particles has been conducted using events with two high transverse momentum τ le... more A search for new particles has been conducted using events with two high transverse momentum τ leptons that decay hadronically and at least two energetic jets. The analysis is performed using data from proton-proton collisions at $$ \sqrt{s}=13 $$ s = 13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2016 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb−1. The observed data are consistent with standard model expectations. The results are interpreted in the context of two physics models. The first model involves right-handed charged bosons, WR, that decay to heavy right-handed Majorana neutrinos, N ℓ (ℓ = e, μ, τ), arising in a left-right symmetric extension of the standard model. The model considers that Ne and N μ are too heavy to be detected at the LHC. Assuming that the N τ mass is half of the WR mass, masses of the WR boson below 3.50 TeV are excluded at 95% confidence level. The data were recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in 2016 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb−1. The differential cross sections are presented as functions of kinematic observables of the top quarks and their decay products, the $$ \mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{t}} $$ t t ¯ system, and the total number of jets in the event. The differential cross sections are defined both with particle-level objects in a fiducial phase space close to that of the detector acceptance and with parton-level top quarks in the full phase space. A search for a heavy right-handed W boson (WR) decaying to a heavy right-handed neutrino and a ch... more A search for a heavy right-handed W boson (WR) decaying to a heavy right-handed neutrino and a charged lepton in events with two same-flavor leptons (e or μ) and two jets, is presented. The analysis is based on proton-proton collision data, collected by the CMS Collaboration at the LHC in 2016 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb−1. No significant excess above the standard model expectation is seen in the invariant mass distribution of the dilepton plus dijet system. Assuming that couplings are identical to those of the standard model, and that only one heavy neutrino flavor NR contributes significantly to the WR decay width, the region in the two-dimensional $$ \left({m}_{{\mathrm{W}}_{\mathrm{R}}},{m}_{{\mathrm{N}}_{\mathrm{R}}}\right) $$ m W R m N R mass plane excluded at 95% confidence level extends to approximately $$ {m}_{{\mathrm{W}}_{\mathrm{R}}}=4.4 $$ m W R = 4.4 TeV and covers a large range of right-handed neutrino masses below the WR boson mass. A search for narrow resonances decaying to bottom quark-antiquark pairs is presented, using a dat... more A search for narrow resonances decaying to bottom quark-antiquark pairs is presented, using a data sample of proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=8 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb^{-1}. The search is extended to masses lower than those reached in typical searches for resonances decaying into jet pairs at the LHC, by taking advantage of triggers that identify jets originating from bottom quarks. No significant excess of events is observed above the background predictions. Limits are set on the product of cross section and branching fraction to bottom quarks for spin 0, 1, and 2 resonances in the mass range of 325-1200 GeV. These results improve on the limits for resonances decaying into jet pairs in the 325-500 GeV mass range.

Candidate events for the leptonic decay mode [Formula: see text], where [Formula: see text] denotes an electron or a muon, are reconstructed and selected from data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.1 (19.6)[Formula: see text] at 7 (8)[Formula: see text] collected with the CMS experiment. The measured cross sections, [Formula: see text] at 7[Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text] at 8[Formula: see text], are in good agreement with the standard model predictions with next-to-leading-order accuracy. The selected data are analyzed to search for anomalous triple gauge couplings involving the [Formula: see text][Formula: see text] final state.
