So sometime around when the first zoomers were being born, some Spanish & Japanese researcher dudes who worked with a Japanese company that makes motorcycles, boats, and musical instruments called Yamaha were like: "yooo, what if we made computer software that can sing songs and shit with unique voices sampled from real people so musicians could make music entirely digitally, wouldn't that be amazing?". And when they finally finished and released their singing synthesizer called "Vocaloid", nobody cared. Then some time later there was this other Japanese company in Sapporo called Crypton Future Media that was like "hay guise, what if we make like a voice package for Yamaha's Vocaloid shit and put a cute twin-tailed waifu on the box art, wouldn't that be funny? wwww". And when they finally released this voice & character called "Hatsune Miku", it became a runaway success.
Miku's cute character design combined with her robotic-yet-charming voice really vibed with people, and immediately after Miku's release, lots of music was made with her voice. The most important thing was that Miku wasn't some random faceless voice in a singing synthesizer app, she was a "real" character singing the songs. And musicians essentially used Miku's character to promote their music with Miku's voice in it. Crypton accidentally created what could be considered the first "open source celebrity" with Miku. This open fictional celebrity Miku kept becoming more and more popular until she essentially had her own live concerts with her performing as a hologram in front of massive crowds all around the world.
Anyways, fast forward to the present, there are a metric fuckton of these singing synthesizer characters that were all inspired by Miku. There is a huge community of people who make lots of music, fan art, games, and hentai with all of these singing characters. Some normies have mistook these singing characters as anime characters, which they are not, but joke's on them, some of these characters have actually appeared in anime because of their popularity.
Before I go on, there are two important things to mention. First, there are a lot of singing synthesizer apps that aren't Vocaloid, and there is even non-singing software that is just plain text-to-speech characters. This is why many people call this whole thing "vocal synth". But there are many who prefer to just call all of this "Vocaloid" anyway because it's the most popular thing, and it is what the majority of outsiders immediately understand and recognize. Second, there are lot of characters that are not Japanese and aren't waifus. There's a hustlin' & bustlin' community of people who make English vocal synth songs and characters. There's communities in other languages too. If you want to, you can even turn your own voice into a digital voice used in singing synthesizer software, thanks to open source synthesizers being a thing.
Down below I am going to share my favourite characters and anything interesting related to them.
Miku is great! Mikuuu! The OG! Like many people, Hatsune Miku was my introduction to this hobby. I originally discovered her back in 2012, and although it took me some time to understand this whole Vocaloid thing, I was hooked right away. Even though I'm slightly bored of Miku, and have tried hard to discover music sung by other characters, Miku still makes up a substantial portion of my favourite music. There are so so many variants of Miku, but on the right are my faves. |

The lovely Yukarin! Yukari was the first non-Crypton Vocaloid that I was enamoured with. When I first heard her voice, it kind of sounded like Megurine Luka to me, but I fell in love right away! Yukari was my most favourite voice for a decade, not anymore, but I still love to hear her! Yukari's character theme is based off of the moon rabbit. Her character designer is Ayakura Juu, who is also the artist for the Spice and Wolf light novels. Because lots of let's play content was made with Yukari, some fans view Yukari as a hardcore gamer. |

About Una! Una is the best! I think that no other character can pull off both cool and cute like Una can. Una's character theme is basically an eel (unagi). Her sentient hat (called Otaman) and twintails are supposed to be like eels. Una has two singing voices: "Sugar" for sweeter songs, and "Spicy" for energetic ones. Una has a ton of character variants, because Una's creators let Una's designer go nuts and make so many variants for her. The V6 sugar redesign is my fave! Fun fact, Una's voice provider is also the voice actor for Doma Umaru. |

Best Sisters! Akane & Aoi are so cute it's hard to put into words. Have you ever taken fresh, warm laundry out of the clothes dryer and rubbed your cheek against the soft, warm cloths? These sisters' voices are the auditory equivalent of that. I love them so much! I want a big Kotonoha Sisters-themed birthday party! I will make a lot of money through unethical means so I can fund a slice-of-life Kotonoha Sisters anime! I do love both Akane & Aoi a lot, but if I had to pick a favourite sister, it would be Aoi. |

About Kafu KAFU is a pretty interesting character! Her voice provider is the popular virtual singer KAF, and KAFU's name is basically meant to be "KAF+(You)". Despite being a relative newcomer in the vocal synth space (released in 2021), Kafu is very popular. This is all thanks to the advertising from KAF, plus a massive pre-release marketing campaign where her creators comissioned a ton of popular music producers in the vocal synth community to make songs with Kafu's voice. And I love that it worked, all this Kafu music is awesome! |

About Rikka! Koharu Rikka is the first-released member of the Otaru Shiokaze trio, which also includes Natsuki Karin and Hanakuma Chifuyu. Part of this trio's marketing campaign is also a tourism campaign for the city of Otaru in Hokkaido. I think Rikka's voice sounds really awesome, and I love her hair style! Cute little twin-buns! A few of the best Rikka songs are covers of other songs, but I think in these cases, her voice sounds better than the originals. Rikka's voice provider, funnily, is also the voice actor for Goto Hitori from Bocchi The Rock. |

Hanakuma Chifuyu (花隈千冬) Chifuyu is the youngest member of the Otaru Shiokaze trio. And canonically, she's a drummer. I love her super soft voice, it's so soothing to listen to. And Chifuyu's character design is so pretty. She's kind of my most favourite voice right now. Fav Media |
Sato Sasara (さとうささら) I've known about Sasara since my early Vocaloid days. What interested me the most about Sasara was that she wasn't on the Vocaloid software, but instead was on a different piece of software called CeVIO that included a singing synthesizer plus a text-to-speech thing. And I thought that Sasara's voice sounded so amazing! Fav Media |
Kasane Teto (重音テト) I've known about Teto since forever, but unfortunately I didn't really enjoy hearing her UTAU voice (with some rare exceptions). However, our girl here managed to end up with a way nicer SynthV voice upgrade, which I actually enjoyed a lot! So now Teto gets a nice spot on my shrine. Fav Media |
Tohoku Kiritan (東北きりたん) Kiritan is cute! Her name is derived from "kiritanpo", a dish from Akita. Those two cylinders next to Kiritan are huge kiritanpos. Kiritan has two older sisters: Zunko, and Itako. These sisters all got the last name "Tokoku" to promote tourism in the Tokoku region in Japan after the damage from the 2011 earthquake and tsunami there. Kiritan is often paired with Una in fan content ("UnaKiri") because they are both the same age. Also, for some weird reason, people really like to use Kiritan to cover nationalist & wartime songs from various places. Fav Media |
Kizuna Akari (紲星あかり) Akari is super adorable! She is Yukari's BFF, and is basically like Yukari's younger sister. Interestingly, Akari and Yukari share the same birthday. There is a lot of Akari content that isn't musical, but I wish there was more awesome music made with her. Fav Media |
Natsuki Karin (夏色花梨) Karin-senpai is the oldest member of the Otaru Shiokaze trio. Karin has a pretty cool voice that can sound very strong and serious if need be. Fav Media |
#kzn (キズナ) "Kizuna" (no relation to Akari above) is an interesting vocal synth that I like. Her voice provider is the vtuber Kizuna AI, who has a great singing voice. But the interesting thing is that Kizuna sounds just like Kizuna AI singing. They're so similar you could mistake her singing for Ai-chan's singing. But I love that, the more Kizuna AI sounds, the better. Fav Media

As I mentioned at the beginning of this page, some vocal synth characters have made appearances in anime. This has happened a number of times ever since Miku blew up, but below are the few instances where the characters are voiced and also appear for longer than a couple seconds on screen.
An 11 year old version of Miku made an appearance as a character in a few episodes of Shinkansen Henkei Robo Shinkalion, starting from episode 15. She was voiced by her voice provider, Fujita Saki, with a robotic voice filter to make her sound more like Miku.
For some random reason, Miku had a short scene or brief appearance in every episode of the third season of the anime Jashin-chan Dropkick. Most times she appeared in a humourous way. Again, voiced by Fujita Saki with a filter. I mean, Jashin-chan Dropkick is fine and all, and I love to see Miku animated, but why is this most amount of screentime that regular Miku has had in any anime?
Somehow, Yukari (and Tsurumaki Maki) made an appearance in the eighth episode of the anime for a now-defunct mobile game, Hagane Orchestra. They both appeared as playable characters in the game too. Yukari and Maki were both not voiced by any real person in the anime. Instead their voices came from the Voiceroid text-to-speech software that they were available in. They sounded fine like that, but they could have actually sounded more human if the creators used community mods made for Voiceroid that can do that.
Kiritan and her sisters made an appearance in an ONA comissioned by their creators. And all the characters were voiced by humans, without any filters. In my honest opinion, this anime isn't interesting, and I don't think you're missing out if you don't watch it. But it's cool to see Kiritan animated.
Vocaloid may have paved the way for singing synthesizer characters, but a different piece of software called Voiceroid paved the way for speech synthesizer characters. Voiceroid created a interesting genre of videos where characters from the software talk or make commentary in videos. This could be characters just chatting and playing out a scene, called VOICEROID劇場 (Voiceroid theatre). It could also be let's play videos where one or more characters commentate on the game being played, called VOICEROID実況 (Voiceroid commentary/let's play). There are also videos where the characters commentate inside a car while being driven around, called VOICEROID車載 (Voiceroid in-vechicle). I've seen other stuff like food videos where characters comment on the tasty food being cooked and then eaten.
These videos are usually made with a piece of video editing software called AviUtl, which has unofficial English versions, but seems to be mainly developed in Japanese. Artists create puppets for the characters that are put into the videos. Then, the video creator uses these puppets with their speech and move them around in various scenes, or just have them in the corner for let's play videos. And AviUtl can either have the characters flap their mouth when they speak, or lip sync along with with what they are saying using the Voiceroid speech files or something. I've seen AviUtl also used for singing videos, some with Miku even.
There is this group of characters I'm just going to call the "Voiceroid squad" because they appear together in videos, fan art, and fan manga together very often. The Voiceroid squad includes Yukari, Una, Akane, Aoi, Kiritan, and Akari. Also there is Tohoku Zunko & Itako, and Tsurumaki Maki. Fans have created this imaginary universe where they all hang out and chat and go to school with each other. It looks pretty fun. Apparently the Voiceroid software has ceased development because of some corporate disagreement, but these characters are all being moved over to a new piece of software called A.I.VOICE. So the Voiceroid squad will still live on, just without Voiceroid being maintained.
In the first few years some characters in the Voiceroid squad were also available as Vocaloids, like Yukari and Zunko, while others like the Kotonoha sisters were just speech-only. However, that didn't stop fans from trying to make songs with the officially speech-only characters. There are fan-made mods & utilities like KotonoSync, KotonoTone, and VocalShifter that allow songs to be made with these characters. A lot of my favourite songs from the Voiceroid squad were made using Voiceroid and these mods. The companies making these speech-only characters did notice that fans really want them to sing and have made official singing synthesizers for them either in CeVIO AI or in Synth V. Apparently A.I.VOICE might be able to sing officially some day, but people still made mods to have characters in the program sing.
Voiceroid wasn't the only game in town though. CeVIO had a speech component too in addition to it's singing part. In the beginning, only Sasara could both sing and speak, but there were two other characters in CeVIO, Suzuki Tsudumi & Takahashi that had speech components (Tsudumi later got a singing component). People did make let's play series with characters from separate software, even though that could have been a little cumbersome to put together and edit. There was a popular Yukari and Sasara Minecraft let's play series in the early 2010s actually. Otomachi Una early on had a speech component called TalkEX, but didn't come onto Voiceroid until about 3 years after that, but people still made various UnaKiri videos with her and Kiritan before that.
So right now CeVIO and A.I.VOICE, plus unmaintained Voiceroid are main big speech synths that are being used to make this cool content (though you should keep an eye on the software VOICEPEAK & VOICEVOX). New speech characters are being made, the most recent noteworthy release in my opinion probably being the Otaru Shiokaze trio (Rikka, Karin, Chifuyu), which are available on Synth V for singing, and CeVIO for speech. Apparently Rikka was originally supposed to be a Voiceroid, but the end of Voiceroid's development resulted in that being cancelled, and her being moved over to CeVIO for speech.
I don't know why this stuff doesn't really seem to be on the radar in English-speaking weeb communities. I can see that these characters are noticed and have seen some English weebs who talk about them, but there's basically nobody who seems to be really into this stuff and tries to translate it. (Side note: many of these videos are subtitled in Japanese so I guess you can use them help learn Japanese by being able to read what you hear.) Hoeverrr, there is a fan community for these speech characters in... China? Chinese people repost & translate this stuff on Bilibili and I think have even made original content over there. So that's nice at least.
Did you know that there is an Una Train?
Yeah, there's an Una train in Japan. The Una train even appeared on TV.
This train is running on the Tenryu Hamanako Line in Shizuoka. The Una train design above appears to be no longer running, but there is a new Una train design that's been running since fall 2022.
