As libraries shift to a more electronic than physical existence, OPACs, or online public access c... more As libraries shift to a more electronic than physical existence, OPACs, or online public access catalog, and ILS, or integrated library systems, will need to be updated to reflect current user needs and search methods to continue to provide a high level of customer service and accessibility of materials. Web 2.0 technologies are increasingly becoming integrated into online library websites and tagging programs are one such technology that meet several needs of libraries and users alike. By adopting a tagging program into the OPAC, libraries can improve accessibility of all materials in their collection with a single program that is created by the user, for the user with little to no negative impact. In this literature review, the benefits and drawbacks of including tagging in library OPACs will be examined, as well as theories for improvement of tagging services and additional potential issues will be discussed.
