Indeed material is essential for the communication of any notion of shared past amongst cultural groups. In the cases highlighted below, it becomes clear that as traditions relating to Athenian involvement in the very origins of religious life on the island, would have been made manifest in various statues/monuments and their cultic consumption. Working from the successful application of Peircean notions of index, icon and symbol in relation to material memory cultural by Jones (2007), I shall highlight how, and in what manner, these physical media would have constructed a conceptualized past for Delos for which Athenian control in the Classical era was but a natural continuation.

In essence, it will be argued that the monumental creations of this period embody a configura-tion of Athenian temporality; organizing synoptic episodes into an ethno-cultural continuum. A required element to this process involves the incitement of landscapes, as the framework into which cultural memory is positioned and incited. This also includes the election of totemic fig-ures, which act simultaneously as emblems of distinct eras and coalescence group memory around heroic events. The provision of those elements necessary for cultural remembering within these monuments, indicate them as affording an overtly formative arena for Athenian collective identity. Moreover, as well as organizing Athenian temporality via narratives of primordial origin, the monuments also display the inclusion of historical, biographical, memory into registers of cultural remembering.

This paper examined the role of the sensory and cognitive experience that would accompany the Athenian ephebic oath, and the resulting impact on participant's identities and willingness to die for the father land as had the heroine Aglauros.

For collective identities to be formulated and maintained, cultural memory must positioned and incited via space as well as time. This process requires prefigured indicators, and associated narratives, which allow for the stimulation of ethno-cultural memory. This paper intends to highlight the monumental assemblage of the Acropolis as media that provided the spatio-temporal arenas necessary for group identity via collective remembering. Indeed, the Acropolis is illustrated as the axial point par excellence of Athenian space and time. Thus the monumental and iconographic manifestations within this context, can be seen as configuring distinct episodes from the foundational past towards the present of Classical, Periklean, Athens. This includes the incitement of distinct mnemonic threads, as embedded in the landscape of the Acropolis, via synoptic episodes, periodization and electing 'sacred figures'. This facilitation of cultural remembering within the Periklean programme also indicates the promotion of lateral biographical memory, into cultural registers. This latter facet is evidenced in the reactions to the Persian sack, and the inclusion of victory in the Greco-Persian Wars into ethno-cultural time. These processes are all clearly evident in the architectural, decorative and spatial relationships of the Temple of Athena Nike. This paper draws on from the theoretical models of J. Assmann expanding on M. Halbwachs, C. Calame, S. Psarra, and the phenomenological approaches espoused by Hamilakis.
