Il s'agit de Judah Loew ben Bezabel (1525-1609) qui s'est employe a degager l'education juive de l'obscurantisme a travers ses reformes et de John Amos Comenius (1592-1671). Les deux hommes sont des produits de la cite praguoise ou se rencontrent l'individualisme, le retour a la nature, le cosmopolitisme et l' humanisme de la Renaissance. Ils n'innovent pas, mais tendent a diffuser et a appliquer les idees nouvelles. Le dernier point commun reside dans l'experience de l'exil et de l'espoir de la redemption

Th... more This ethnographic paper describes how a small Reform Jewish day school “does” moral education. Through classroom and school observation, interviews, and artifact collection, the researcher describes and analyzes the steps through which a school implements a vision of caring. Articulating a thoughtful philosophy of curriculum and curriculum‐making, and underscoring it with rituals, role models, and heroes, the Nahshon School is able to craft a cogent message that commitment is unthinkable without community. The author delineates some of the obstacles that the school must face: parents who want more academics and competition for their children; the continued integration of Eastern European emigres and the children of intermarried Jews; and the twin strains of a growing student body and an expensive new facility.

The burgeoning day school movement has provided the momentum for rethinking the nature of the edu... more The burgeoning day school movement has provided the momentum for rethinking the nature of the education of Jewish teachers. As more full-time opportunities in Jewish education arise, applications of students to institutions which educate teachers have risen steadily. The interest in the field and the need to do right by these bright, dedicated students has spurred the Department of Jewish Education of the Jewish Theological Seminary to reconceptualize its program for day school teachers. In consultation with the schools whose needs must be met, the Department has created the Mandel Day School Project. This paper describes the Project, a model which not only aims at changing the education of future teachers, but also that of professionals working in the field.
