Harmonic Heights

Harmonic Heights is a rhythm game centered around building a new music academy using chord progressions, scales, and simple song arrangements.

The game was an entry to GMTK Game Jam 2024 for the theme "BUILT TO SCALE" with the concept, art, and code being developed in less than 96 hours.

Please leave a rating on the game's Jam page!: https://itch.io/jam/gmtk-2024/rate/2903045

How to Play:

Play the web version in the embed above (or by downloading the HTML file) or play on windows using the EXE file at the bottom of the page (recommended). MacOS and Linux versions will be created after the judging period ends.

Controls: Use mouse to interact, press escape to pause, and the controls shown on the piano keys to play notes. (these can be remapped in options)

Other Notes:

The game is fairly unfinished and contains many known bugs and undoubtedly many unknown ones. It would help a lot if you left a rating and commented any bugs/suggestions you might have!

In the next few of weeks, I will begin developing a post-jam version of the game taking into account suggestions and bugs discovered during the judging period and features I didn't have time to implement.

Additionally, I will likely open source the game and post a devlog for the game in the future.

To be notified for either of these things, follow me on itch.io.

The web version is sadly not working for me :(

Are you using Chrome on a Mac? I had someone report an issue that was occurring on that platform but I'm not exactly sure why it's happening. I'm sorry you couldn't manage to play it but I'll try to investigate after the voting period ends.

Edit: Forgot to mention, but playing in Safari solved the issue for someone else in that situation.

No windos but chrome :)

Liked the idea (like others) about building with the song. I think to grow on this idea the harder songs could have larger buildings (like skyscrapers and stuff)!

Yeah, more varied/impressive building art was the original plan, especially since I had initially wanted the game to have a few different worlds with the first being a somewhat practice one with simple houses. Thanks for playing though!

Loved the idea of a rhythm piano game with construction and the style is so cute as well! But the issue I encountered was that the easy levels were way too difficult, there was no time to react to the notes. Just an idea but maybe the notes could correspond to the song's notes, for example for the 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star' easy level it could have you play the actual corresponding piano notes of the song maybe, it would also make it easier! And then for the medium difficulty ones you could have more chords instead of single notes and so on :) but overall i loved the idea, great work!

Thanks so much for the feedback! I definitely wanted to do many of those things but didn't get the time!

Definitively needs more time to react to note + the song needs to be synched

Thanks so much for playing and giving feedback! I'll make sure to consider it when updating/releasing a more final version the game after voting ends :)

pretty neat game, hope the final version is a little easier, maybe have a smaller keyboard for earlier levels

Thank you! I definitely plan on making the game easier/slowing down notes/levels. Also, since you posted your comment before the rating period started, I wanted to let you know that you can leave a rating on the jam submission page: https://itch.io/jam/gmtk-2024/rate/2903045 .

cute idea! I found it hard to hit the notes with so little time to react

Thank you for playing and I definitely understand that it can be pretty challenging/frustrating especially in the earlier stages of the game. definitely plan on making the game easier/slowing down notes/levels after the jam.

Also, since you posted your comment before the voting period started, I wanted to let you know that you can also leave a rating on the jam submission page if you want: https://itch.io/jam/gmtk-2024/rate/2903045 .
