First, a formulation is developed to calculate the induced drag in ground effect, which correlates the experimental data better than the present standard methods. Then the single vortex method and the distributed vortex method are extended to include the ground effect. The results of the two methods are compared with the available exact solution results.

Both methods use staggered grid arrangement and SIMPLE pressure velocity coupling treatment, but the dependent variables in the momentum equations are different. One of the methods uses Cartesian cell face velocity components and the other uses covariant cell face velocity projections.

The image method is used to model the ground effect. According to the results, lift coefficient of an airfoil may increase or decrease in ground effect based on a combinative effect of its camber, thickness, angle of attack and ground clearance. Airfoils with different section parameters are analysed and their relative effectiveness are compared.
