These functions place them among the most attractive, informative and curious cultural things in human history. The highest military awards, like the Soviet Order of Victory, symbolize the scale of battles, whereas campaign medals reflect the course of warfare. Military decorations usually imply mortal threats or even acts of heroism of their owners, not being awarded for labour or other civilian activities. Military orders and medals are in great demand among the collectors, being better known for public than other orders and medals. For example, the Japanese military Order of the Golden Kite seems to be the most famous decoration of Japan even now, seventy years after its abolition. The first order of Indonesia is the Bintang Gerilya — The Guerilla Star, instituted in 1949. Its form looks like an imitation of the Ottoman Gallipoli Star. The Bintang Gerilya reflects the modus operandi adopted by Indonesia during its wars for Independence against the Dutch. During the late fifties, the Indonesian Army took control over the nationalized factories and other businesses previously belonging to the Dutch. The Indonesian Army also turned more professional due to actions of several top grass commanders, like Nasution and Gatot Soebroto. The Army and Indonesian Government managed to put down some important separatist movements across the Malay (Indonesian) Archipelago. Obvious military success needed to be praised. In 1958 the highest military award of Indonesia — the Bintang Sakti, or Sacred Star — was instituted. The statute and history of the Bintang Sakti are the subjects of this paper.

The book is a collection of essays dealing with various aspects of Southeast Asian and Cambodian epigraphy and state formation. The first essay shows the decisive step to the territorial state in Southeast Asia that took place in the seventh century CE. The second essay offers English and Russian translations of the Văt Luong Kău inscription K. 365 issued in honour of the King Devānīka and found near Vat Phou in Laos. Devānīka’s kingdom had no relation to the kingdom of Zhenla, except the possibility that Zhenla conquered the kingdom of Devānīka or his successors. The third essay gives English and Russian translations of the earliest dated Old Kkmer inscription K. 557/600 of 611 CE found in Angkor Borei. The essay includes a short overview of the personal names in the inscriptions of Cambodia. The fourth essay includes English and Russian translations of the Phnom Preah Vihear inscription K. 733 and a discussion of the root vidyā in Old Khmer inscriptions. The fifth essay outlines the history and archaeology of Funan and its transition to Zhenla. The essay is written in Russian. It shows a gradual Indianization of the Lower Mekong River Delta where the kingdom of Funan emerged in the beginning of the Common Era.

Political History of Central Vietnam in the Second – Eighth Centuries: Linyi and Campā. Moscow: Institut Stran Vostoka, 2015. 160 pp., ill., map. The book brings together current historiographic trends depicting early history of Central Vietnam lands as an area of mutual rivalry of various political centres with unstable political hegemony (Southworth 2001, 2004; Vickery 2005, 2009; Schweyer 2012). First chapter contains a short overview of the sources of Campā history. The second one tells a history of the kingdom of Linyi known from ancient Chinese sources and situated between the Ngang Pass and the Hải Vân Pass, with a conjectural centre near the modern city of Huế. The author shows the discrepancies of Chinese texts that mixed data on the Linyi history in the fifth century narrating contradictory stories of the king Fan Huda’s successors. He doubts William Southworth’s hypothesis that Campā may be identified with the kingdom of Xitu mentioned in the Chinese texts. Despite Anne-Valérie Schweyer supports this suggestion, it looks ill-founded: the Chinese describe Xitu as a small kingdom with 2,000 families. In comparison with an army of Linyi that consisted of 40,000-50,000 soldiers it should have been a small principality. But I agree with an old idea by Rolf Stein (1947) that Linyi and Campā cannot be identified with each other until at least the seventh century. The third chapter gives a brief account of current archaeology of Central Vietnam. The fourth offers an analysis and the first Russian translation of the Vỏ-cạnh inscription found near Nha Trang. The author holds that the inscription cannot be dated earlier than the fourth or fifth century CE as it contains a verse in the vasantatilaka poetic metre that has been in use in royal epigraphy from the Imperial Guptas only. The fifth chapter offers Russian translations of early Campā inscriptions. The author gives a detailed commentary of previous translations into French and English made by Louis Finot, Edouard Huber, Paul Mus, Georges Maspero, Ramesh Chandra Majumdar, William Southworth, Karl Heinrich Golzio, Anne-Valérie Schweyer, Dominic Goodall, and Arlo Griffiths. The sixth chapter reconstructs a history of the kingdom in the Thu Bon River Valley that since the sixth century had been called Campā. The author shows that it sometimes enjoyed hegemony over remote lands in the Phú Yên, Khánh Hòa and Thừa Thiên–Huế provinces. He stresses that during the reign of Prakāśadharman-Vikrāntavarman the kingdom (kṣoṇī, deṣa, rājya) consisted of provinces (viṣaya). He also points out that the land-surveying mentioned in the earliest inscription of the Thu Bon Valley and issued by the king Bhadravarman testifies to the existence of well-developed early statehood.

Khaki Capital: The Political Economy of the Military in Southeast Asia, Copenhagen: Nordic Institute of Asian Studies, 2017, 351 pp., ISBN 978-87-7694-225 (pbk) (Studies in Asian Topics, no. 61), in: Journal of the Malaysian Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society, vol. 91, pt 2, No 315, pp. 159–164 (December 2018). The military has always been a crucial trait of modern states. Its leading or at least highly influential role in many Asian states is well-known due to multiple coups d’état and armed conflicts throughout the twentieth century. Southeast Asian states, with the sole exception of Thailand (Siam), did emerge as anti-colonial projects in the middle twentieth century and as results of the Second World War. Their births coincide with the Cold War and its clashes between the Capitalist World led by the USA and the Communist World led by the USSR and/or China. Struggles of new Southeast Asian states for independence and against various ideological rivals did make the military a key factor in their formation. Paul Chambers’ and Napisa Waitoolkiat’s volume offers a comprehensive study of the military in Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Indonesia. The editors focus on the connection between the military and economy. How the military in these countries obtains its funding, how the military influences politics and civilian officials, how the civilian can or do control the military, how an active role of the military in national economies of Southeast Asian states helps or endangers the democratic building, — are the main questions of the volume under review.

First chapter contains a short overview of the sources of Campā history.
The monograph reconstructs political organisation of early maritime Southeast Asian polities on the basis of Sanskrit inscriptions. I show that these polities may be viewed in many ways accordingly to the theory of political organisation which is adopted and/or elaborated by a scholar. Political evolution of these polities will vary respectively.
The monograph contains a historiographic review of Bactrian history, a historiography of Srivijaya (in English), and a deconstruction of the concept 'Ancient Orient' in Russian historiography
