How does you game fit the theme?
Dave the Watcher fits the theme of "You're Not Alone" because while the game is solo, a mysterious figure helps guide you through impossible levels.

However, this guide keeps messing up, and eventually, they lose it. Are you able to survive the guide and the challenges you face in the environment in this short and comedic game?

Did you write all the code and made all the assets from scratch?
I wrote 100% of the code from scratch. Since I did this project solo and I'm a programmer, I didn't create the audio/art, instead, I had permission to use them.

(I am now in a rush to test as many games as possible to help, so please do not mind the cursory reviewing style.)

Semi-on-the-fly remarks:

Spoiler: on the game page: oh no, this feels like an auto-spoiler! :o "But when Dave's true intentions are revealed,"

by the way: game page synopsis -> makes me think of "Portal 2"!

cool menu! :) Including level selection feature!

music loop from the menu is just a bit audible ;) (being nitpicky, sorry!)

misspelling "your a bucket" (ah, discard that, errors are on purpose for Dave!)

"Dave" = reference to "2001: A Space Odyssey"?

nice detail: name "???" becomes "Dave"

love the meta-humour ("like in other games")

Controls are QWERTY-only instead of layout-independent (I have an AZERTY keyboard), BUT arrow keys are enabled.

reaching rightward platform: oh, I had not noticed the right click logo in the introduction! :o Nice! But maybe you should place it otherwise, or add a small background for it; I had not noticed it the first time possibly thinking it was an in-game object?

mop is saved! I guess this is the sidequest feature the game page talks about!

testing the spikes: oh, sudden reset of the level! Some visual effect and sound would have been nice

(level 3) tried jumping and making the platform appear on the bucket to see if this caused a bug ;) Apparently, merely a simple collision? I wonder if you can get stuck in the middle

showing the level number when in the level could help, when you play without level selection

Spoiler: secret for mop in level 8 helps me in hindsight for level 6, I think X)

Level 8: oh, getting the mop and THEN losing still counts the mop as obtained! :o I feel this is a bit too lax

Oh, possible bug: the upper-right spikes from level 8 are harmless! X)

Aaah, the way to end for level 8 is unexpected, I thought you still had to move [spoiler] after the moving hole.

BUG: I had VOLUNTARILY left one mop behind (in level 4, and still also had to go find that from level 6), but I am still treated with the special bonus for finding them all! :o

Spoiler: is the joke that Dave is a bomb? X)

Dave’s voice and the living bucket/objects concept remind me of "Banjo-Kazooie" XD

Looking for level 6’s mop: WHERE IS IT?! O_O I cannot find it!

Takeaway: I enjoyed the game; its narration has a very "Portal 2"-esque vibe. :) I think the mechanic of having to click through the dialogue to modify the level is interesting! Nevertheless, it seems the mechanic is used not too much (except in the last levels), and always quite linearly (the best strategy, once knowing the dialogue out of curiosity, is to click your way the hell out of the mouse!). The level design made the game rather easy, except once again for some later levels with some tricky passages (especially the one with the conveyor belts, and the last level (8) where you have to be quick). In particular, I think you could have put the more skilled players to the test by having the mops in more challenging spots! (Maybe this is the case for level 6 and I am a partly a fool, then. XD) The narratively driven mechanic connects well to the theme. Also liked the graphics you chose and arranged; some more sounds would have given some more life and cues, especially when losing and jumping (although you did put one for falling/colliding!), but those present are nice (laughing points for Dave’s voice XD And also the alarm!).

I think this is an interesting and funny prototype that could be enhanced with more challenge, basically!

Thanks for the good (?) time with clumsy Dave. :)

Thanka so much for your review! Will definitely take what you said into consideration! 🧹

Happy for the comment to be useful! :) By the way, when you have the time, could you answer the few questions (Space Odyssey, bomb, and level 6’s mop)? Thanks!

Developer(+1)

Hey. Dave wasn’t an intentional reference however does seem to reference that! The prize for finding the secret is thr bomb, in which Dave gets 1 last punch at you. As for the level 6 mop, it is behind some metal boxes and must be found by entering a hidden area.

Just for the record, finally found it: I must have been jumping too early before the ‘step’ each time. XD Thank you!

Nice job!

Bruh.... I got stuck inside the box 3 times but your narrator and audio is really good.... Overall game play is smooth as butter.

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! Sorry about that, will find a fix for that soon.

Submitted

This was really funny to play! All the dialogues and levels are good, the audio and art you chose complete everything very well.
I enjoyed it a lot!

Developer

Thank you so much for the feedback! Hope you enjoyed playing and finding the secrets!

I never played a bucket. This is an extra star for innovation!

The game had a good difficulty for me and the quick restart made failing bearable

Developer

Thank you so much! Hope you enjoyed the game and secrets (if you found them)!

Submitted

Very sliperry and fun! I didn't get what was the prize for getting all the mops but overall, great game.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! The suprise was a little weird I will admit! Thanks for playing and finding the secret! 🧹

Submitted

Loved the commentator! The music was nice and the gameplay was smooth, but sometimes I got stuck inside blocks. Besides that, keep up the good work!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! I will work on fixing hitboxes!

Really nice game!

The way the voice talks to us reminded me of Portal.

I struggled for a while to get past the level with the spikes that go up with a hole!

I like the concept of the same level changing each time.

With further development I'm sure this game would appeal to many. Maybe even a smartphone adaptation could be possible!

In any case, great job!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! Hope you enjoyed playing and finding the secrets!

Good job creating this game on your own! It has some nice humor! The platform controls could have used more precision and why right click to continue dialogue? :P I din't manage to finish the level where the helper lost it. I couldn't jump high enough to get to the upper platforms and I tried jumping through the hole in the rising spikes, but just landed on other spikes. Perhaps I missed something?

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the feedback! For that level you were supposed to go to the upper level by climbing on the mountain of metal and from there land in the hole for the spike platform!

The right-click to move dialogie was weird. It was due to you clicking UI with that same click but also, it’s annoying and that’s what Dave wants! 🧹

Submitted

i find the character movement was a little bit too fast especially on air. it even could just skip dave's help on like treadmil platform. but overall cool game :D

Developer

Thanks for playing! I agree the player was a bit fast and was having trouble nailing down a good speed. Will be sure to fix this!

Submitted

Pretty nice one Congrats on submitting! All the best.

Developer

Thanks! Hope you had fun playing!

We loved it. Graphics are clean and seemed polished. We liked that the dialogue and the "guide's decisions" were playful and with character, Like a portal game, outsiders but meaningful. We were surprised that you had the time to add collectables and a final easter egg for those who put the effort. Great experience over all!

Developer

Thank you so much for the feedback! I really appreciate you playing the game! 🧹

Submitted

It was a pain to collect all of those mops but it's worth it!

Developer(+1)

Haha! Thanks!

Submitted

Loved it! Especially the art style and colors. I was satisfied with the box at the end. When I jumped, I kinda felt like a ghost floating around. Did you try to do that? The jumping I made for my game was more concise.

If you don't mind, could you play and review my game? I need some constructive criticism lol.

Developer

Hello, yes the floaty jump was intentional! Thanks for playing! 🧹

P.S. I will be sure to play your game!

Submitted

Nice game love hopping in the box at the end it just feels great! Jumping feels a little floaty but maybe that's what you're going for

Developer

Hello, yes, the floaty jump was intentional so you could kind of glide. Thanks for playing! 🧹

Submitted

i like the idea of iterating on the same level over and over, adding new challenges while keeping the base geometry the same. nice work!

Developer

Thank you so much for the feedback! I hope you enjoyed the game and tried finding all the mops! Thanks for playing :).

Submitted

On some levels where there were spikes moving up, it was a bit weird having to go spam through the spawned to get the needed platform spawned in.

Small nitpick: right click is a bit weird for showing the next dialogue.

Nice complete little game. The "floaty" movement felt bad at first but then become the main challenge which was fine.

Developer (1 edit)

Hello, thanks for the feedback. I agree the movement is a little floaty and will be sure to fix in a later update!

I chose right-click because left-click was used for buttons, for the future, I can fix this and find a way to stop changing dialogue when you click on a button. The large amount of dialogue was done on purpose so Dave could frustrate you. Thanks for playing!

Submitted

I didn't mind the dialogue. It was just a bit weird when a spike platform spawned in and started floating up and I have to go through some dialogue to have the platform I need to jump on spawned in. When this happens it incentives me to spam through the dialogue quickly to spawn in the platform I need before the spikes reach me.

Developer

I understand, I will work to find a fix for this, thanks for playing!

Submitted

Nice game, I like the dialogues and the effort put into making them! The game mechanic with the levels etc is also a pretty well design part.

Overall is a good project, well done!

Thank you so much! I appreciate you playing the game!
