France embodies the essence of winemaking, not to mention the enjoyment of the product itself, and many of the world’s finest vinous practitioners take their inspiration from the holy grails of Burgundian Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the legendary reds and the sweet wines of Bordeaux, the aromatic wonders of Alsace, the spicy opulence and deft balance of the Rhône Valley’s blended wines, the delicious delicacy of Chablisean Chardonnay, the smoky, mineral elegance of the Loire

Valley Sauvignons, or the deceptively pale yet dazzlingly weighted Provençal rosés. And really, who can forget the effervescent pinnacle that is French champagne? And while the rest of us have imitated and replicated and made expressions every bit as interesting, the original, the benchmark, the genesis of great grape growing and wine making really did begin in France. If you’re already a French fan, well, we’re preaching to the converted. Santé!

ALSACE

Alsace is one of the most unique and picturesque jewels in the crown of French wine. The history is complicated to say the least. Between France, the Holy Roman Empire and Germany, the region has been carved up, reunited, and annexed by sword, gun and paperwork several times before finally returning to the French fold via the Treaty of Versailles.

This Franco-Germanic combination works especially well in the world of wine, which is itself a key part of the region’s history and economy. Here, you'll find some of the finest examples of aromatics that are made anywhere, and happily for our New World sensibilities, the varietals are even right there on the front label.

The Vosges range shields from both wind and rain, providing the long, narrow region a sunny continental climate and protection

from the worst ravages of weather. Soils in Alsace are also extremely varied as a result of tectonic shift and the movement of glaciers, ranging from sandstone and granite to limestone and clay, sometimes in the space of just a few hundred metres.

White wine is king in this cool climate region, making up over 90% of total production. Riesling and Gewürztraminer are grown here – in fact the only region in France where that is the case in any significant quantity.

Some lesser known varieties including Pinot Blanc, Muscat and Sylvaner also have a home in Alsace, but it is Pinot Gris that is probably the most recognisable. In contrast to Alsatian Riesling, that is typically steely and dry, the Pinot Gris is usually rich, unctuous and mouth-fillingly moreish.

The Gisselbrecht family have been producing wine in Alsace for over 300 hundred years, operating from Dambach-la-Ville, where the company owns 17 hectares of some of Alsace’s finest vineyard sites. The family also own significant parcels in the Grand Cru Frankstein and buy fruit from the Grand Cru Muenchberg and from a select group of growers.

Gisselbrecht introduced a quality charter that rewards growers by paying above-market rates. In return, they insist that yields are kept lower than the authorised AC limit and that best vineyard management practices are maintained. Traditional methods acquired over generations are merged with modern tech to produce their highly regarded range of wines.

BEAUJOLAIS

Officially part of Burgundy, the nonetheless independent Beaujolais froths with highly fragrant and vibrantly flavoursome reds made from Gamay, a thin-skinned – hence low-tannin – grape that the region's 4,000plus growers put to (mostly) good use. Almost all of them sell to large co-operatives or negoçiants, with Georges Duboeuf the biggest and the most innovative.

Suffering a somewhat tarnished reputation from its Beaujolais Nouveau tradition of rushing very young wines to market on the third Thursday of every November, Beaujolais is now on an upwards arc.

The traditionally fruity, forward style of Beaujolais wine utilises the method of carbonic maceration, where the fruit is vinified in sealed vats, the grapes at the bottom crushed by those at the top in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide, the technique producing wines for early consumption.

There are actually 10 crus in Beaujolais, their wines generally made using more traditional vinification processes. Gamay is not unlike Pinot Noir, light-bodied with elevated acidity, and its less pronounced tannin structure.

Beaujolais is currently a hotbed of new young winemakers and the region is witnessing a surge of experimentation. Our range continues to include the excellent benchmark wines from the late Georges Duboeuf, to which we have introduced a group of new producers.

All of them are co-operatives that bring together the grapes from a selection of growers to make, bottle and promote the wines. The very best of them produce excellent wines; for instance, mindful of their quality levels, Château des Loges select just the top 25% of the grapes they bring in, selling off the rest in bulk.

A brilliantly-priced wine from the pioneers of Beaujolais. Crafted from the strong and fruity Gamay variety, the Villages model is mid-range Beaujolais and a step up from the Beaujolais Nouveau. Soft, fruity, succulent drinking.

GEORGES DUBOEUF

The undisputed King of Beaujolais was the late Georges Duboeuf, who started by roaming the region in his VW back in the 1960s, making wine wherever he stopped, and whose company now produces upwards of 2.5 million cases a year, making it one of France's largest and bestknown wine merchants.

An innovator in the way Beaujolais was made, Georges also took the concept of Beaujolais Nouveau to new heights. It is now one of the wine world's most famous events, centred around the concept of being the first wine of the vintage, with much fanfare made of its release on the third Thursday in November.

BEAUJOLAIS

CHÂTEAU DES LOGES

Established in 1961, this Beaujolais co-operative has 150 members that make wine from almost 430 hectares spanning a number of appellations. You’ll find the crus Brouilly and Fleurie produced here, alongside an excellent Beaujolais Villages.

A large proportion of the areas are HVE3 (High Environmental Value) certified, encouraging the preservation of biodiversity and water resource management.

While the members between them have extensive resources available, they don’t make wine from all of it, using just 25% of the fruit produced for their label, and selling off the balance.

Here you'll find carbonic maceration and a forward, easy-drinking style. Offering an expressive nose with aromas of red fruits, this is tender and balanced, with fruity notes and an attractive vibrancy on the palate.

CAVE DU CHÂTEAU DES LOGES

CHÂTEAU DE CHÉNAS

A Beaujolais co-operative with an impressive 80 producers and a collective 210 hectares. Only a fraction is under vine, with 90 hectares sited in various cru. Château de Chénas are the largest producer in the Cru Moulin-à-Vent, with a significant holding in Chénas as well.

This is a cooperative with very high standards; each vigneron checks their vines and reports. If the report is not to the required standard, they are simply not accepted. The winemaking then depends on the source and the cuvée.

Constructed in the 1700s, the impressive cellar holds up to 850 barrels. A serious range of excellent Beaujolais Cru is coming from this co-operative. Well priced for the quality.

Pure red fruit aromatic notes augment the juicy, ripe red fruit characters working in delicious harmony on a silkily suave palate. Smart wine.

Well made and exceptional value, this is Gamay Noir fruit off vines with an average age of 40 years, grown on sandy granite and clay soils. Around 25% semi-carbonic maceration, with the rest of the fruit treated to standard red wine production.

VIGNERONS DES PIERRES DORÉES

Encompassing the entire southwest of Beaujolais, Vignerons des Pierres Dorées is a co-operative offering a unique diversity of terroirs. Their main buildings are in Oingt, a village that began life as a Roman castrum and was restored to now be one of the most beautiful in the area.

A blend of modernity and tradition, the collective embraces the knowledge passed down families from generation to generation. The highlight of the year, the harvest remains largely manual. These are honest, well-made wines with prices to match.

Ask the world’s finest Pinot Noir producers where they draw their inspiration from, and many will answer, ‘Burgundy’. The wines produced within its borders are among the world’s greatest.

Here, the ruling white grape is Chardonnay in its various guises, from the richness and intrigue of Burgundy proper to the unique gunflint character in the delightful PouillyFuissé. French Chardonnay comes across leaner, a little more earthy. Nuance, shadow and subtlety are its traits, and they really need to be experienced to understand them.

For many years we have enjoyed partnerships with Burgundy's best negociants and domaines, delivering a range of styles, prices and vintages like no one else, offering the opportunity for those new to the wines to have a play without melting the credit card.

In the 1980s rivers of inauthentic white averageness from all over the globe were labelled Chablis, some without having seen a Chardonnay grape, let alone a lifetime growing up in Kimmidgerian soil. Not these days. The oyster-shelled terroir that is one of the key components in Chablis’ unique profile is now protected by law, as enshrined and important to the wines as the marginal and northerly aspect of Chablis’ location.

Only one variety counts here, and that is Chardonnay, which thrives in the same chalk soils that run through Champagne. Chablis is indeed Chardonnay in one of its purest expressions, the deliciously lean styles unmistakeable in their provenance and restraint, the steely, floral bouquet, delicately crisp, refined flavours and underlying flintiness indelibly characteristic of their terroir.

DOMAINE SÉGUINOT-BORDET

Domaine Séguinot-Bordet have been producing wine in the commune of Maligny since the 18th Century. 13th-generation Jean-François Bordet steps between the old and the new and has taken his family house to another level, installing up-to-date tech and establishing a strict viticultural regime in the vineyards. With the exception of the Grand Cru, wines are cool fermented and matured on lees in stainless steel. Fresh, clean flavours are underscored by the minerality that characterises the classic Chablis style. With demand for their product at an all-time high, Séguinot-Bordet have had to start allocating their elegantly expressive, benchmark wines.

DOMAINE MOUTARD

The Moutard-Diligent family can trace their history of viticulture right back to 1642. Today, the stewardship of François, Veronique and Agnes is augmented by their sons Thomas, Edouard, Alexandre, Benoit and Victor.

With fingers in three distinct pies, Moutard Champagne, Moutard Burgundy and Moutard Distillery, it’s a good thing there are seemingly a lot of Moutards, as the scale of activity will keep them all very busy.

While they produce wonderful champagnes, the family's roots are in Chablis, where they own some of the region's finest Grand cru vineyards. Moutard’s exceptional Grand cru offerings are a bargain for wines at this level.

A delightful weighty style with a delicate floral tinge to the apple, citrus and gooseberry aromas. A bold palate with crisp mineral overtones. 2021 was a great vintage in Chablis; this over delivers for its price tag.

No oak, just pure essence of Chardonnay in a precise, definitive Chablisean expression. Bright notes of citrus and chalk, fresh acidity, beautiful fruit and a delicate touch of shell-like minerality.

The Domaine Laroche vineyards are currently undergoing conversion to organic agriculture. Their vineyards are spread out across the entire region, on the unique Kimmeridgian soil that contains just the right amount of limestone to impart the mineral characteristics that have become so coveted in Chablis wines.

Vine diversity is preserved through Laroche’s massal selection, i.e. the visual selection and propagation of robust vines believed to have a diverse genetic base. Laroche benefit from exceptional plant diversity, the viticultural team systematically selecting the best vines from which to produce younger plants. The aromatic diversity of the older vines explains the wide range of aromas present in the Laroche wines.

The Loire Valley redefines the meaning of diverse. With its 80-plus appellations it is a treasure trove of vinous expressions, from the Sauvignon-derived, smoky, mineral-tinged Sancerre and aromatic, steely-flavoured Pouilly-Fumé to the equally eminent wines of Vouvray, fashioned from Chenin Blanc and ranging from austere to opulent.

Our featured wines still show French restraint – why throw away hundreds of years of vinous knowledge – but these chaps are a new breed of fearsomely talented and bravely pioneering individuals. The Loire offers a quality/bargain metric that, quite frankly, nowhere else in France can match. The best expressions taste like a million bucks and cost a fraction of that.

BOURILLON DORLÉANS

The Bourillon family have been making wine at Rochecorbon in the Vouvray appellation of the Loire Valley for generations, their immaculate vineyards sustainably managed and the Chenin Blanc fruit hand harvested and matured in medieval caves located alongside the winery. Respected winemaker Frédéric Bourillon has with much focus and endeavour transformed the family’s 26.5-hectare business into a major player, championing the unique vinous expression that is the Loire’s Chenin Blanc via their elegant range of Vouvray wines.

No slouches when it comes to innovation, they were the first in France to adopt scratch-andsniff aromatic wine labels.

DAGUENEAU

It’s not often one feels they are in the presence of winemaking genius, one whose energy and spirit seem to emerge from the very bottle. This was the late Didier Dagueneau.

Decanter named Didier as one of the world’s top ten makers of white wine, opining that his expressions “tower over the rest of PouillyFume” and that “he makes brilliantly three dimensional wines, while too many of his fellow producers struggle to make it to two.”

The Sauvignon Blanc wines of this risk-taking Loire perfectionist are legendary.

Meeting an untimely end at the age of 52 in a plane crash, his brilliant legacy has been kept alive by his family via the dedicated and talented hands of his son, Louis-Benjamin. To this day, Dagueneau’s Silex is hailed as the pinnacle of Sauvignon Blanc production.

Silex owes its name to to the flint soil in the vineyard. The wine is smoky, tight, and as we have come to expect from Silex, typically powerful. Yet another brilliant Silex; absolutely classic Dagueneau.

A superb Sauvignon expression delivering bright citrus notes and dazzling minerality. Previously labelled Blanc de Pouilly-Fumé, the name change is due to an ongoing 'discussion' between Louis-Benjamin and local authorities. Dagueneau withdrew from the appellation system, hence no reference to Pouilly-Fumé on the label.

With such a legacy to carry on his shoulders, Louis-Benjamin seemingly had his work cut out. He has, however, risen to the occasion, and under his watch, the Dagueneau wines have, if anything, increased the reputation of the winery as a producer of outstanding quality.

This was arguably an inevitable outcome, given the son's time alongside his father, absorbing the latter's sense of rigour and his meticulous practices in both vineyard and winery.

Louis-Benjamin is said to be unassuming, yet quietly confident, inspired to continue his father's agenda to raise the quality all of the wines that Domaine Dagueneau creates.

BORDEAUX

The largest AOC area in France, with 86,000ha of vineyard plantings and 60 million cases produced annually, when combined with the peerless pedigree of the world famous reds, the whites of Graves and the seductive Sauternes make this a region you cannot ignore.

Some of the best value Bordeaux wines are crafted by the petits (small) châteaux. They offer serious, estate-grown and châteaubottled wines crafted by quality conscious individuals. These producers work hard at upping the stakes, and many are delivering earlier drinking, riper styles that allow a user-friendly route into the complex world of Bordeaux wine appreciation.

If you’ve enjoyed Cabernet, Merlot or, indeed, Cabernet Merlot, then it pays to know the rivers of great and merely very good wines that flow from within its much classified and over-discussed boundaries.

Down in south-western France, the Dordogne and the Garonne rivers flow together to form the Gironde Estuary, effectively splitting the Bordeaux wine region into the Left Bank on its western side and the Right Bank on its east. The main factor that distinguishes their respective wines is the composition of the blends: the reds of the Left Bank are dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, while the Right Bank wines focus on Merlot.

It bears remembering that good producers don’t make bad wines, no matter what the year. Value and quality are constants; your palate will tell you when you strike them.

Originally created by Bordeaux legend Baron Philippe de Rothschild, the Mouton Cadet wines are fantastic buying

The story of Mouton Cadet is intimately entwined with that of Bordeaux itself. In 1855, Napolean instigated the region's system of classifying its wines from first growth to fifth growth. At that time, Mouton Rothschild was classified as a second growth. When he inherited the company in 1924, Baron Philippe de Rothschild launched a determined campaign to correct this 'gross oversight'. Mouton Rothschild was finally promoted to First Growth status in 1973, one of only three changes ever made to the original classification.

In 1930, the Baron created Mouton Cadet as a ‘branded’ Bordeaux. The first of its kind, it was just one of the many innovations he introduced.

In 1988, following Philippe's passing, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild carried forward her father's agenda, under the banner of Mouton Cadet, to make a great Bordeaux wine that was accessible to a wider global audience. The indefatigable Philippine turned it into the biggest selling branded Bordeaux wine in the world. learn

Red and black fruit aromas with subtle touches of vanilla. Round, succulent, voluptuous red and black fruit flavours emerge on a dense and concentrated palate, nuanced with delicate spice notes.

A Merlot-dominant blend with a 5% hit of Cabernet. Ripe black fruit aromas and flavours, notes of spice and roasted coffee bean, the concentrated finish underpinned with refined tannins.

Pale candy-pink with lychee highlights. A succulent nose of intense grapefruit and red berryfruit aromas. A highly expressive palate of fresh red berryfruit flavours finishes on an elegant lingering finish.

Subtle blackcurrant aromas, flavours of blackberry and mild spice. A concentrated mid-palate, rich, refined tannins. The finish expresses the Médoc terroir in delicate touches of blackcurrant.

Strawberry, and blackberry aromas, notes of pepper and cinnamon. Supple tannins, a stylish, fruit-filled palate of blackberry and blackcurrant flavours, vanilla and mocha notes on the finish.

Floral and red fruit aromas, notes of paprika, cherry and blackcurrant. Delicate tannins, an attractive, complex palate offering spice and floral notes, red and black fruit flavours and a fresh mineral finish.

BORDEAUX BLANC

White wines are produced across Bordeaux, primarily using the Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc varieties, often with Muscadelle adding lift and verve. One of the key elements defining the Bordeaux whites is that they are generally aged in oak.

Graves, south of the city of Bordeaux, is home to some of the region’s finest white wines. Most Sauternes producers have always made a white wine as well.

While the Médoc is heavily red-centric, towards the north there are many plots of white grapes, with top châteaux including Lynch-Bages, Cos d’Estournel and Margaux all producing white wines there. These tend to be a more tropical and expressive style of oak-aged Sauvignon Blanc than the leaner mineral expressions of the Graves region.

The Entre-Deux-Mers region between the Garonne and Dordogne rivers generally crafts early-drinking styles; here you’ll find great value Bordeaux whites.

This delicious aged Bordeaux should have a bigger price tag. An expressive bouquet of red and black berries. The palate coffee and spiced notes with a soft easy-going finish.

BORDEAUX

Bordeaux is a temperate growing region with a long enough season to ripen Cabernet Sauvignon and the warmth for Merlot. Surrounded by rivers and ocean, The lack of certified organic wineries here has generally been attributed to the resulting high degree of humidity.

Château Pontet-Canet was one of the first to convert to organics, a road not without its challenges; the pressure of disease was so much just before the final year of conversion that they sprayed and started again. Moving forward, they are now not only organic but biodynamic as well.

With many top châteaux following in Pontet-Canet’s footsteps, there is also a strong movement from the Petit Château contingent towards organic and biodynamic, with some very fine Natural offerings as well. With these wines registering high on GM Liz Wheadon's tasting radar, this sees us with a great range in hand of environmentally-focused, good value, super tasty Bordeaux.

We feature here the 'little brothers', or second wines from some of Bordeaux's great estates. Once you have tasted a few of these superb expressions, you’ll concur that referring to them as ‘second wines’ could come across as a little miserly.

The concept of second wines was initially created to improve the quality of the top wines by isolating the finest fruit, with the little brothers invariably produced from the estate’s younger vines.

Nowadays, thanks to a great deal of concentrated effort, these second wines are more an early-drinking expression of the top wine rather than a ‘second wine’ with any drop in quality that title implies.

THE RHÔNE

Along with Bordeaux, the Rhône Valley is France’s most important source of AOC, or appellation d’origine contrôlée, wines. The area divides into two distinct subregions, the northern Rhône and southern Rhône, the pair quite different geologically, climatically and viniculturally.

In the north’s prestigious appellations of Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, Saint-Joseph, Cornas and Crozes-Hermitage, its famous red wines are produced almost exclusively from Syrah. The region also produces small quantities of white wine using the Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne varieties.

The Grenache-dominated south, with its countless terroirs and micro-climates, produces a great diversity of red, white and rosé wines. These include the red AOC wines of Vacqueyras, Gigondas, Vinsobres, Tavel,

Lirac and the legendary Châteauneufdu-Pape. Wines from the top producers are usually blends consisting of Grenache partnered with Syrah and Mourvèdre, sometimes including Carignan or Cinsault. A specialty of the region is from the AOC Beaumes de Venise, a distinctive fortified wine produced from the Muscat grape.

By far the most plentiful wines of the entire Rhône region are the Côtes-du-Rhône expressions. Theoretically these can be blended from up to 21 varieties, but AOC regulations stipulate that wines must consist of at least 40% Grenache and minimum levels of Syrah and Mourvèdre. The best of these – particularly those from individual domaines and quality-oriented négociants – offer superb value.

MONT-REDON

The Abeille-Fabre family of wines continues to expand under the stewardship of Pierre Fabre. So too does a focus on the environment. Mont Redon is one continuous estate sitting atop the Châteauneuf-du-Pape plateau, crafting wines from their home appellation and around the southern Rhône.

The most recent project at the base in Châteauneuf-du-Pape has been the construction of a new winery, cooled by natural air-conditioning using a Canadian well. Warm air is circulated through pipes that are buried below the vineyard at a depth where the ground temperature is more stable. The resulting cool air is then used to control the temperature in the winery.

THE RHÔNE

LE COLOMBIER

Domaine le Colombier is one of the many hidden vinous gems dotted throughout France. Located in the southern Rhône village of Vacqueyras, this historic property is managed by Jean-Louis Mourre. Since his ascendance, the wines have become particularly good. He does have great tools to work with, the cellar and vines some of the oldest in the village.

Mourre has a great understanding of the physical aspects of the estate, particularly around the soils. Le Colombier is organically certified. The resulting wines from Vacqueyras, Côtes du Rhône and Ventoux are spectacularly good, right across the range. The Vacqueyras have become a benchmark for the style, with Parker hailing them as stars of the appellation.

Domaine des Bernardins is located in the Southern Rhône village of Beaumes-de-Venise, best recognised for its sweet fortified wines. Made from the variety Muscat à Petits Grains, these wines were first recorded as being produced in the area in Roman times.

The Bernardins winery is currently managed by the fifth generation of the Castaud family. Named for the Bernardin monks who established the estate, the oldest wine enshrined in the cellar is a Muscat from 1847.

A sustainable approach is employed in the management of the vineyards. The Mediterranean climate provides the warmth required to mature the white Muscat variety and Bernardin’s main red variety, Grenache.

YVES CUILLERON

From his home in the northern Rhône, this Condrieu specialist knows how to make the Viognier grape sing, earning a reputation as one of the Rhône’s leading vinous exponents.

He is one third of Les Vins de Vienne’s elevated trio of winemakers, and his own wines from the various appellations he draws upon come in threes; not content with a single expression blended from his various sites, he prefers to explore the individual characters of each location and present them in isolation.

The wines are stunning, the top expressions sold out each year before leaving the gates of the estate. Building on a property first established in the 1920s by his grandfather, Yves has upped the ante considerably. In pursuit of the finest possible fruit, Cuilleron’s viticultural approach is all natural, the end result power, elegance and a superb sense of place.

With Oratoire Saint-Martin considered the best site in the appellation of Cairanne, the excitement of Mont-Redon's Pierre Fabre at recently acquiring it cannot be overstated. The appellation itself was recently elevated to Cru status. The Domaine has been farmed organically since the 1990s, biodynamically since the 2000s. Under former owners the Alary brothers, winemaking was very low intervention (read 'natural'), a philosophy that Pierre is excited to continue and explore.

THE RHÔNE

BOIRON

According to Robert Parker, the Boiron family is one of the most consistent producers in the region; he has regularly rated their wines in the high 80s and 90s. Since 1860, consecutive generations of the family have grown the estate, protecting its terroir and maintaining the quality standards. With old vine Grenache at his disposal, current scion Nicolas Boiron has access to excellent natural concentration in the fruit. Fragrant and juicy, but not over-weighted, the Boiron wines exude a subtle delicacy. Their depth of character is due in no small part to the diversity of soils present in the domaine, with 27 hectares of Châteauneufdu-Pape included in the family holdings.

Delicate aromatic notes. Spicy and silky, dominated by Grenache, with a decent proportion of Syrah adding depth and flavour. Supple tannins. Nicely balanced, it can be drunk young, but has good aging potential.

BOSQUET DES PAPES

The Boiron family have been making wine at their Châteauneuf-du-Pape property since 1860, handed on from father to son for five generations. Known since 1966 as Bosquet des Papes, Nicolas Boiron and wife Jeanne-Claire carry on the family traditions.

Grapes are handpicked and initially sorted on the stump, where the picker has two buckets. A second sorting of grapes is carried out on the tractor platform which will bring them to the cellar. What follows is classic winemaking work where nothing is left to chance.

The Boirons pursue a philosophy of technology allied with tradition, evolving to accomodate the modern way of consuming wine and steadfastly committed to sustainable farming.

Along France’s southern coast, the restrictions of the Appellation Contrôlée system in general give way to a freedom around vine cultivation. The benign climate delivers long, sunny days for ripening, while a moderating coastal influence keeps much disease at bay.

The Languedoc-Rousillon region is an area that starts just north of the border with Spain and runs along the coast.

Towards Provence is Minervois, where Anne Gros and her Burgundian winemaking husband Paul Tollot craft their excellent expressions from Carignan and Syrah under their Gros-Tollot label.

Here, too, Jean-Claude Mas, savvy producer of the dynamic Arrogant Frog label, produces a great range of Vin de Pays wines that includes his singular old vine Carignan.

CHÂTEAU LÉOUBE

While Léoube produce some of Provence's finest rosés, under the practised eye of winemaker Romain Ott and owners the Bamfords, they do so much more. Organic and biodynamic, this is an impressive estate, with the man in charge of the elevated standards over that period the talented winemaker, Romain Ott.

Alongside Léoube’s dazzling collection of rosés is an intriguing range of reds and whites. With the vineyards located to the southeast of the Rhône Valley, the style of these wines bears some similarity to those of their neighbours. The Love by Léoube rouge is a fresh, fruity style made for immediate drinking, while the Rouge de Léoube offers a slightly more structured style and the Secret de Léoube range is all about finesse and elegance.

THE SOUTH

GROS-TOLLOT

Gros-Tollot is a joint venture between the husband and wife super-team of Anne Gros (she of the eponymous Vosne-Romanée domaine) and Jean-Paul Tollot (of Domaine Tollot-Boeut).

They have transported their Burgundian sensibilities to the South of France, where they create vibrant combinations of the Carignan, Cinsault, Grenache and Syrah varieties, responding avidly to the challenges of a climate so different to what they are accustomed to on their home turf.

The pair have embraced their 14 hectares of ancient vines and their terroir with both hands, and are turning out wines unlike any others in the appellation and, indeed, beyond it.

The Carignan

CHÂTEAU D'ANGLÈS

Château d’Anglès was purchased and given a new lease of life by Eric Fabre when he ‘retired’ from his role of 20-plus years as winemaker at Château Lafite-Rothschild. While there, Eric was taken with Mourvèdre's impressive balance, savoury overtones and its ability to express the terroir.

This, along with a desire to be somewhere warm and dry after many years in the Médoc, led Eric to Languedoc, and specifically to the AOC of La Clape. Eric was joined there by his son, Vianney Fabre, who was for many years at Champagne Bollinger. With such a formidable pair working in tandem, the quality at Château d’Anglès is outstanding, as is the value these wines deliver.

CHATEAU BELLINI

The ancient Roman road, Via Aurelia, has long facilitated the trade of olive oil and rosé. Born there in the 10th century, the Domaine was acquired in 2017 by Tom Bove, responsible for the restoration and then sale of Château Miraval to Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.

Tom then set about renovating La Mascaronne, before onselling it to Château Cos d'Estournel owner Michel Reybier and adding the property now known as Château Bellini to his collection. Tom has farmed all his properties organically. At Bellini, vines are only watered during their first year, allowing them to seek hydration at depths of up to 25m. Harvesting is by hand between dusk and dawn to avoid fermentation and oxidation of the grapes, which are then sorted by hand. Bellini pursue low yields, to produce wines of the highest quality without compromising on aroma and flavour.

FRANCE

Rosé is more than just a summer quaffer, given the intensity, and indeed surprising weight, of the French expressions. If you're after something to go with your autumn and winter fare, you'll be looking for a bit of complexity; and don't mistake colour for weight – some of the most substantial rosés can be as pale as they come.

The standout region remains Provence. The world's only region specializing in dry rosé, Provence is strewn with vineyards from the Mediterranean coast to the foothills of the Alps, from Aix-en-Provence to Nice's famed Riviera.

France holds the top position on the quality rosé market with 29% of the world's rose wine production. The AOP (Appellation d'Origine Protégée) designation is a guarantee of authenticity and production quality. Côtes de Provence, Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence and Coteaux Varois en

Provence constitute 96% of the AOP wines in the region. 91% of the wines produced by these three AOP are rosé, and in France, rosé has outsold white wine since 1994.

Rosés are versatile and, depending on the style, can be served with a wide selection of foods. As a general rule, lighter, drier rosés make excellent aperitifs and are a good accompaniment to grilled or fried fish. Sweet styles are particularly well-suited to fruits such as strawberry and raspberry. The bigger-bodied rosés are very good with salads, poultry, ham and salmon. Two important things to remember about rosé: serve it chilled and drink it young.

FRENCH sparkling

With the law stating only those wines produced within the delineated area known as Champagne may be referred to by that auspicious name, it is equally true that there are some wonderful sparkling wines popping their corks from all corners of France.

Highly popular are the classic méthode traditionnelle wines, using the system developed in Champagne. Following an initial fermentation, blended still wines are transferred to bottle, with a little liquor to take it on its journey that contains some sugar and yeast. This initiates a second fermentation within the sealed bottle, creating alcohol and releasing the carbon dioxide that produces the bubbles. It's here you’ll encounter excellent value for money, with Moutard’s Blanc de Blancs and the Saint-Meyland great examples of the genre.

An older, much less utilised sparkling style is Pét-Nat. Short for pétillant-naturel, aka méthode ancestrale, this is a traditional way of making sparkling wine that is, in fact, the world's most ancient. The wine is bottled before the primary fermentation is finished,

delivering a lower pressure, lightly sparkling expression. The wine is finished without the addition of secondary yeasts or sugars. Pét-nat wines are unfined and unfiltered, with no sulphur added. As such, they are often a little cloudy – it’s harmless and will settle to the bottom of the bottle. Capped with a crown seal, they can be sour and funky, like your favourite Kombucha, or crisp and fresh in style like a méthode traditionnelle.

A hidden gem in the French sparkling firmament is Crémant, a sparkling wine made the same way as champagne that is derived from eight specific regions that are permitted to make it. Crémant de Bordeaux, Crémant de Bourgogne, Crémant de Loire, Crémant de Limoux, Crémant de Jura, Crémant d’Alsace, Crémant de Die (from the Rhône Valley) and Crémant de Savoie. The varieties used for these styles tie in with the region involved; in the Loire Valley, for instance, it’s Chenin Blanc and in Bordeaux, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon.

There has been a noticeable uplift in the standard and consistency of Piper's gold medal and trophy-adorned non-vintage cuvée, firmly instilling it as a reliably highquality and competitively priced option in the non-vintage champagne market.

So, what is the difference between Piper’s Cuvée Brut NV and their Essentiel Cuvée Réserve NV? In a nutshell, the Essentiel is exactly the same base as the Brut NV, with one further year on lees aging and less dosage. Piper-Heidsieck Brut NV has 8-10 g/L dosage, whereas the drier in style Essentiel has around 5g/L.

The Essentiel was born of customer interest in lower dosage wines and a drier style of champagne. Aging on lees occurs once the second fermentation has occurred in the bottle; the reaction with the dead yeast cells is known as autolysis. Characters such as brioche and toast are autolytic characters. These become more pronounced in the wine the longer it has in contact with the lees.

There are parts of Piper's cellars where conditions create uniquely different wines. These are elected to stay in the cellar for longer, receiving the lower dosage and thereby becoming the Essentiel. It arrived at a time when Grower champagnes, with their associated transparency, were gaining popularity. In these information-hungry times, one can find on the Essentiel’s back label the relevant details of what’s inside the bottle.

CHAMPAGNE GROWER

Serge Mathieu work sustainably and as close to the edge of biodynamics as nature will allow. Low filtration, low use of sulphur and gentle handling produce an attractively delicate style that is Pinot Noir dominant. Lovely texture and weight.

THE HIDDEN SEA

The winemakers at The Hidden Sea are on a mission to help remove plastic from our oceans

Born both from the sea and also in response to human degradation of it, comes The Hidden Sea Wines. Co-founders Richie Vandenberg and Justin Moran have combined their love of the ocean, South Australia’s ability to produce excellent wines and a commitment to ‘living with purpose,’ to create a brand that is helping to clean up our seas as a core part of its raison d’etre.

To do this they have partnered with the ReSea Project to remove and recycle the equivalent of ten plastic bottles from the ocean for every bottle of wine they sell. The Hidden Sea have set themselves the goal of removing a billion bottles worth of plastic by 2030, the equivalent of nearly 17,000 tons of waste. As Richie puts it, 'the idea of living with purpose is to set an ambitious goal that is worth fighting for and galvanising a tribe of like-minded people to help you achieve it.'

CHARD FARM

We were fortunate to visit Chard Farm in January 2024 and catch up on all the news. Super exciting to try the wines and hear of all the developments. The quality of the wines was an absolute highlight, and we don’t know if they have ever tasted this good. The thing that stood out, though, was how this pioneering winery continues to develop and evolve without making much of a song and dance about it.

The true Kiwi spirit has always been strong at Chard Farm. Fresh from studying wine making in Germany, a chance encounter led Rob Ray to Chard Farm in 1986. Early advice was quite simple: don't be stupid; best not to plant anything down there at all. The wine critics of the time chiming in with a helpful: ‘If Central Otago wine producers believe they can create high-quality wines, they are seriously deluding themselves.’ How wrong were they?

While you could say that Chard Farm have done it and achieved what many said they could not, they have now embarked on yet another journey, one of regenerative viticulture. While members of Sustainable NZ, they know that sustainability is not enough, and that regeneration is required.

To do so, Chard Farm are focusing on biodiversity, nurturing the soils, reducing the use of chemicals and machinery to ensure a cleaner future. Soil and vine health are at the core of this, with strong root systems, water retention and increased nutrient availability. A solar energy system has reduced their reliance on the grid by 90%. It can be captivatingly easy to look to fine wines from overseas when it comes to building a cellar, or buying that gift you know is going to stand the test of time time and be even better on, say, a 20th anniversary. Wine from places like Bordeaux or Barolo have built much of their reputation on their ability to age, and are usually safe options for doing so. But as our wine industry matures, so do our wines, and many are proving themselves as excellent bets for cellaring and the delayed but worthwhile gratification that can bring.

We have put the following collection together with exactly that in mind. These are all wines that can be enjoyed now, but will also deeply reward the patient. Some, such as the Brookfields Gold Label Cabernet Merlot, have been made for a long time now, and have proven their longevity. Others, like the Smith & Sheth Cru Heretaunga Syrah, come from more recently established wineries, but with all the winemaking pedigree married to superb fruit to instil the utmost trust.

Cellaring terms between these wines will vary, and you might expect a Cabernet-based wine to outlive a Chardonnay for example, but that is why we suggest that when you enjoy a wine and would like to see how it matures, buy multiple! Taste it yourself over the years to find that sweet spot you like best.

COGNAC SIPPING WITH THE ANGELS: THE ALLURE OF

Distilled from grapes, this subtle, somewhat magical elixir is produced under very strict regulation in the French region of Cognac. All cognacs are brandy, but not all brandy is cognac. Very special brandy indeed, though, with Victor Hugo once referring to cognac as ‘the liquor of the gods.’

During maturation, often longer than the prescribed minimum of two years, the brandy absorbs tannin and vanilla from the oak and, as it matures, some of the alcohol slowly evaporates. This is often referred to as the angels’ share.

Much of the control of production and dominance of sales rests in the hands of a small number of very large brands. The ‘Big Four’ of Hennessey, Rémy Martin, Martell and Courvoisier have a production that dwarfs the combined efforts of the region's hundreds of other distillers by

a significant margin. Their size and scale have helped to propel cognac onto the global stage.

Similarly to champagne, smaller houses exist and thrive. Lhéraud and Tesseron are fantastic examples of family-owned producers offering interesting and unique cognacs.

The drink itself is versatile and lends equally well to classic cocktails, mixers and straight. Younger examples, such as those labelled VS and VSOP, may have a sharper, brown sugary taste that pairs deliciously with soda, ginger ale or lemonade, while the XOs and rare vintage bottles often have the distinctive rancio aspect (think tropical fruits, cigar box and earth) that is best enjoyed neat.

The last remaining independent company still producing Vermouth de Chambéry, Dolin was founded in 1821, with over two centuries of tradition and family experience under their belts. Ardbeg Day 2024 heralds the release of the Ardbeg Spectacular, where devilish sweet meets smoky peat

By the time you read this, Ardbeg Day 2024 will be a thing of the past. For future reference, it’s the first Saturday in June every year, a day where loyal Ardbeg fans and those who just love whisky gather to celebrate Ardbeg. Each year is accompanied by a special Ardbeg Day release. This year it’s the Ardbeg Spectacular.

In a first for Ardbeg, the Spectacular has been matured in port wine casks, then married with classic bourbon barrels, creating an extraordinarily smoky and balanced Ardbeg dram that imparts all manner of interesting notes and aromas. This is devilish sweet meets smoky peat!

Exotically aromatic, with fragrant top notes of lavender, vetiver and incense candles. Underneath, some deeper notes – a touch of

leather, some almond nuttiness. A splash of water opens up the bouquet, revealing hints of woodsmoke, damp peat moss, menthol.

The mouthfeel is salty, but viscous at the same time, and leads into a burst of huge, salty, savoury, smoky flavours – eucalyptus oil, salted caramel toffee, smoked pecan nuts, fragrant woodsmoke and tar. There is also a background sweetness, like a smoky pear crumble and some fudge.

A lingering aftertaste offers leather, salted caramel and a cooling mentholic sensation. You’ll find Ardbeg Spectacular and the entire range at Auckland’s Ardbeg Embassy in our Jervois Road Spirit store, as well as online and in all Glengarry stores.

NEW KOREAN

Soju is the essence of Korean distilled elegance. A pristine, colourless distilled beverage, the term soju is derived from the Korean words So, representing the fiery intensity of distillation and Ju , for alcoholic drink.

Traditionally crafted from rice, modern distillers have diversified their starch sources, incorporating ingredients like potato, sweet potato and tapioca. This initiative originated during World War II, when rice distillation was prohibited and Koreans sought out alternatives, in the process generating the term ‘Green Bottle Soju’.

There are two main types of soju: Premium distilled soju is made using high-quality rice, carefully selected and refined to eliminate impurities. The grains are meticulously mashed and fermented, resulting in a pure and full-bodied alcohol base. Multiple distillations ensure an elevated level of purity and alcohol content.

Diluted soju, aka Green Bottle Soju, is the version made from sweet potatoes, potatoes and tapioca. It follows a method akin to the traditional distilled soju, with the alternative starches employed to attain 95% ethanol, mixed with water and flavouring.

Yipseju is a Green Bottle Soju popular among soju drinkers for its clean, smooth taste. The flavour is typically mild, which allows it to be enjoyed neat, chilled, or mixed into cocktails.
