Host With the Most
Saturday Night Live has been part of my DNA for nearly five decades. I’ve rarely missed an episode since the late ’70s, and I’m a big student of its history. It’s given me so many quotes I still use to this day (“I need more cowbell!” has to be at the top of the list) and has informed my sense of humor more than any other show in my lifetime (Sorry, Seinfeld and The Simpsons). By far the most significant element of this show for me is “Weekend Update,” a spin on the top stories of the week that, over the years, has hosted a wide range of comedic talents. And given the show’s nearly 50-year existence, it might surprise you to discover which of those talents has held down the coveted desk more than any other. Nope, it’s not Chevy Chase, not Dennis Miller, not Norm Macdonald, not Tina Fey and not Seth Meyers. It’s none other than Colin Jost, who’s been at it since 2014 (Meyers is closest behind him with eight seasons).
Jost, who subsequently began co-hosting “Weekend Update” with Michael Che, will bring his considerable talents this week to Resorts World Las Vegas—along with some surprise guests (“Comedy Conduit,” p. 32). Expect a healthy dose of SNL -style humor, along with Jost’s unique observational style.

And that’s just the beginning of the entertainment options available this week. If you’ve got the family in tow, check out Potted Potter at Horseshoe Las Vegas, a fun spoof of the popular book series that’s celebrating its fi fth anniversary (“Casting Its Spell,” p. 12). Meanwhile, over at Park MGM, Spanish language supergroup Los Bukis continues its smash residency at Dolby Live (“Right Time, Right Place,” p. 42).

Casting Its Spell
Spoof of famous book series celebrates a milestone on the Las Vegas Strip
Something magical is currently happening at Horseshoe Las Vegas, in more ways than one. One of the best family-friendly offerings in town, Potted Potter, a comedy show centering around the seven books about wizard Harry Potter, is celebrating its fifth anniversary—and 1,400th performance—at the venue this month.
If you want proof of how good this show is, watch the kids in the audience: During the course of a 70-minute-plus show, not once are the young ones distracted or bored. They are completely invested from beginning to end, and that speaks to the incredible talents of performers James Edwards and Nicholas Charles, who pull out all the Hogwarts Express stops in creating an unforgettable recap of arguably the greatest fantasy literary series of our generation.
To call this a “low-budget experience” is understating things considerably, but that’s a huge part of its charm. Potted Potter feels like something you’d create in your parents’ basement with your best friend, using whatever props are handy. So, in addition to “sets” like a wardrobe, coffin and a small wooden train, Edwards and Charles incorporate elements as disparate as a Super Soaker, a can of Silly String, large inflatable balls … and a chocolate cake! (You’ll have to see the show to figure out what that’s all about.)
Costumes also figure liberally throughout Potted Potter, from a golden-hued getup associated with Quidditch to a buffed-out body suit for a certain not-to-be-named villain. There are also lots of wigs and masks as the two principals tirelessly play all the characters in the books, complete with horrible accents, which only make the kiddies in the crowd laugh harder.
Audience participation also plays a part here, mostly during the quidditch section. Wait, you ask: Will you actually be playing the game? Again, you’ll have to buy a ticket to find out.
Through all this is the nonstop clowning by Edwards and Charles, who show more than a little talent at physical and verbal comedy, not to mention hilarious facial expressions. Whether you’ve read the books or not, these two men make every Muggle in the audience forget their worries and cares, if just for an hour. –Ken Miller

A New Realm
Get in touch with your imagination at this immersive experience
Making a social media post while riding the escalator to Luxor’s Atrium level could create a blinkand-miss moment on the way to Particle Ink , the property’s latest attraction. You’ll find it, though, and the 7 p.m. start time is loose enough to allow stragglers to explore the entirety of this strange new world that boldly goes where no immersive entertainment experience has gone before.
It is a puppet who greets and entertains guests who enter the main room and surround a performance area in a half-circle before the show starts proper. He’s a crack crowd work comedian in a small dragon-shaped form who confides that there are aspects of the show only visible to “those with hearts to see them. Children mostly, and some adults such as those who have drank ayahuasca!”
Then the crowd is pitched into darkness, save for six glowing, waist-high obelisks in the middle of the room. The abstract story continues to unfurl from room to room. More dynamic dancers appear, with furious floor spinning executed during the proceedings. A tentacled creature hides in the shadows, making its presence known when it’s ready. The puppet returns. A childlike figure completes tasks that make it self-actualized.
Then it’s over, and the feeling that remains is one of satiation, similar to what you’d experience after seeing Star Wars or a concert for the first time. Except this is cutting-edge and novel, graphically so. It’s avant-garde performance art that takes tech-infused Vegas entertainment to the next level. –Matt Kelemen

If the answer is yes to any of the above, chances are you’ve seen Pioneer Saloon The 111-year old historical landmark that sits just outside the Las Vegas Valley is chock-full of history, lore and fantastic food and bev offerings.
“To me the bullet holes are the No. 1 most famous thing that we’re known for,
so you have to see that,” owner Stephen “Old Man Liver” Staats said. “But then I always tell people, ‘Just come to the dining room and check out all four walls and you’ll get a good history of the place and different versions of it.’”
Those bullet holes Staats speaks of came from a poker game gone awry that ended in murder, and you can actually still sit at the poker table to enjoy a meal and beer while you take in all of the memorabilia of this storied spot.

Excellence in Everything
Have some of the finest dining options available in town at this iconic restaurant
The Venetian celebrates its 25th year on the Las Vegas Strip this year, and its executives could not be prouder of the impact the resort has had on the city’s entertainment scene, from shows and nightclubs to bars and restaurants. And by far one of the biggest impacts has been courtesy of Emeril Lagasse’s Delmonico Steakhouse, as old as the resort itself and still as vibrant and vital as the day it opened.
One of the keys to Delmonico’s success has always been its presentation. The dining room is immaculate, with comfortable seating, perfectly appointed tables and gentle, elegant lighting. Another is its waitstaff, as friendly and approachable as you’re likely to find anywhere in the world. From servers to sommeliers, there isn’t a single aspect of service that’s been ignored. Whether you arrive with a plus-one or a large group, you are going to be made to feel special here.
Lagasse has updated his appetizer menu over the years, but one has always been there, and for good reason. The truffle and Parmesan potato chips are so light and crispy, but not bogged down by the toppings, making them an instant classic here. Deviled eggs fans will want to check out Delmonico’s version, topped with sturgeon caviar and sitting on rémoulade sauce. If you want a cool twist on bacon, the apple-cured Kurobuta bone-in version features pickled watermelon rind and an Abita root beer glaze.
On the meat side of the menu, three cuts stand out: the 20-ounce Kurobuta pork chop, cooked to absolute, juicy perfection and served with herb jus; the prime bone-in ribeye, pictured, dry-aged on the premises; and the 9-ounce Creekstone Farms filet mignon, naturally raised Angus that might spoil you for all future filets.
We hope you saved room for dessert, because Delmonico has one of the most iconic: Emeril’s banana cream pie, practically its own food group with caramel sauce, chocolate shavings and whipped cream. –Ken Miller

Italian Indulgence
Strip restaurant’s high standards result in a knockout meal
In just a few short years, RPM Italian has risen to serious prominence on the Las Vegas Strip. Everything about this restaurant is deeply satisfying, from the warm, inviting dining room to the attentive waitstaff. And the menu is packed with all the Italian favorites you crave, as well as some pleasant surprises.
If you’re a caprese fan, wait until you try the Maine lobster version here, utilizing succulent chunks of crustacean along with buffalo mozzarella, basil and San Giacomo balsamic. The bread section, always a staple of any Italian restaurant, offers rosemary and sea salt focaccia, truffled garlic bread and whipped ricotta and wild blossom honey, accompanied by focaccia.
Hot antipasti highlights include crispy Roman artichokes with caper vinaigrette and pecorino Romano, Mediterranean octopus with chickpea puree and celery, and prime beef meatballs with roasted garlic and Parmesan. Pasta courses range from carbonara, pictured, featuring spaghetti, black pepper pancetta and an egg yolk, to Mama DePandi’s Bucatini flavored with Parmesan and Genovese basil; steaks include a bone-in ribeye and Gorgonzola-cured wagyu strip; and chicken Parmesan and black truffle chicken Vesuvio are both as excellent as you would expect.
For a truly memorable dessert experience, order the Tableside Service, where a spumoni torta meringata is brought to your table and lit. When it cools, get ready for the combo of flavors of pistachio, vanilla, raspberry and warm chocolate sauce. –Ken Miller

Varied Voices
Iconic ventriloquist returns to the Strip for another night of laughter
Jeff Dunham has never been one to alter his point of view in acquiescence to cultural currents. If anyone is offended that he speaks through a cast of characters that includes an anthropomorphic jalapeño, a deceased foreign national and President Biden, they can cope. Words may come out of their mouths that draw criticism or public ire, but Dunham is fully supportive of his inner circle. His main commitment is to the fan base he’s built over decades that has enabled him to become one of the most successful contemporary tour-
ing comedians. His most recent payback is Comedy Central special Me the People, which had its broadcast debut a month before the December launch of his North American tour leg.
To be clear, it’s not actually Dunham speaking through an effigy of the POTUS. It’s his right-hand man Walter, who already had a resemblance to the 46th president and reluctantly takes on the role. Walter previously worked up an impression of the 45th president, and at one point played both politicians simultaneously in a debate. He may be a curmudgeon,
but when he commits, it’s difficult to discern mannequin from man.
It’s Dunham who gets the fame, the fortune, the star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame. Dunham gets credit for breaking records for ticket sales. He’s been consistent, but he hasn’t oversaturated himself. He has political beliefs that inform his comedy, but he’s not hostile or transgressive. –Matt Kelemen

Class Is in Session
Learn the art of crafting cocktails at this Strip destination
Learn. Make. Drink. Easy peasy—not so fast, ya lemon squeezy! Just like a fine cocktail that should be savored, the new Mixology Masterclass at The Cabinet of Curiosities at Horseshoe Las Vegas takes the time to be enjoyed.
It all begins inside The Cabinet of Curiosities, the main lounge where “students” will gather before stepping through a giant door shaped like the entrance to a safe. Once inside the safe, as a team, you’ll have to solve the riddles to gain access to The Lock, the hidden speakeasy. Once inside The Lock—a dimly lit, beautifully decorat-

You’ll put on your special apron, that you get to keep, and in front of each seat are all the tools you’ll need for class: shaker tin, jigger, muddler, Hawthorne strainer, bar spoon and more. Don’t worry, part of the class is being schooled on what each one is used for and how to properly use them.

He also makes the class fun; in fact, he puts the “fun” in the fundamentals of cocktail making. “The best part of this class is that at the end of the day you’re going to learn a little something about making cocktails,” says Ponsky. Triple George Grill and Freedom Beat refresh and revive their menus
By Nina King
When Downtown Grand property executive chef Nicholas Beesley took the reins of the resort’s culinary program in mid-2023, revitalizing the menu at the revered Triple George Grill was among his first priorities.
Beesley has been in Las Vegas since late 2009, in properties from Caesars Palace to the Silverton, after years of developing his skills in the eastern U.S. “Downtown Grand o ers me an array of diverse talent to work with. My favorite thing about my role here is that I really enjoy being able to express myself in the food,” Beesley said.
When you dine at Triple George Grill, enjoy the secluded booths along with a prominent bar (perfect for happy hour with its special eats and drinks) and look out for elevated cocktails like the Privilege, with a mix of Hennessy V.S. cognac, Grand Marnier, pineapple and lemon juices and orange syrup, or the Tokyo Tea, combining vodka, gin, rum, tequila, melon liqueur, sour mix and a splash of Sprite. And you’ll find steakhouse signatures such as crab cakes, wedge salad, salmon and tomahawk ribeye all over the menu. Tableside Caesar salad is a revered presentation of the classic
Espresso martini
dish. You’ll also notice that those familiar foods have creative twists to explore. For instance, the crab cakes are served with a Cajun aioli and lemon crème fraîche, while the blue BLT wedge integrates sundried tomatoes.
As you peruse the o erings, more favorites come to light like Italian meatballs, made with all beef, pork and veal, oysters on the half shell, and shrimp cocktail. French onion soup features a combo of Swiss and Parmesan, while mozzarella terzetto, a dish recommended by Beesley, presents three types of mozzarella along with heirloom tomatoes, Kalamata olives, soppressata, gherkins and roasted red peppers.
Main dishes include the petite filet mignon, 8 ounces of black Angus beef (and steak selections can be enhanced several ways, from peppercorn sauce to a Gorgonzola melt), bone-in pork chop, rack of lamb, eggplant cannelloni, and chicken Parmesan. Seafood includes sea scallops with roasted sweet potato polenta and another Beesley favorite, the Fisherman’s Wharf cioppino, chock-full of shrimp, clams, mussels, octopus, squid and fish in a tomato-herb broth.
Top it all o with tiramisu or go more decadent with smoked chocolate cake and
an espresso martini.
Over at Freedom Beat, Downtown Grand’s diner, be sure to check out the Build Your Own Mac & Cheese Bowl, with choices of protein, cheeses and pastas, something Beesley introduced after tweaking other parts of the diner’s menu. But there are plenty of other good choices such as the pot roast Benedict, stu ed strawberry French toast, a pot roast sandwich on sourdough, Nashville hot chicken, New York steak and a vegan shepherd’s pie.

Colin Jost is the write guy to make boundary-stretching comedy great again
Whether audiences and critics found Colin Jost funny after he replaced Seth Meyers on Saturday Night Live’s “Weekend Update” or thought he had a very punchable face, it’s beyond debate that he’s
half-responsible for drawing the long-running segment’s biggest laughs since the late Norm Macdonald era. He and Michael Che struck a chord when they started writing jokes for each other that would have to be read
on air, without the teller having prior knowledge of the joke’s content. Thus, an ongoing game of one-upmanship was launched, with each comedian seeing how far the boundaries of standard and practices—and perhaps good taste—could be stretched before breaking. If it’s
not humor without a net, it comes close. Co-head writer Jost was the write guy in the right place at the right time to help send the SNL pendulum in a critically acclaimed direction again, and he’ll headline this week at Resorts World Theatre, joined by SNL alums Punkie Johnson, Andrew Dismukes and Devon Walker.
Jost joined the show as a writer in 2005, a job he dreamed of while growing up in Staten Island.
9 p.m. July 20, starting at $75 plus tax and fee. ticketmaster.com
president of venerable
Jost attended a private Catholic school before attending Harvard alongside dormmate Pete Buttigieg. He wrote for and became president of venerable humor publication The Harvard Lampoon, which includes Conan O’Brien, B.J. Novak and screenwriter Douglas Kenney (Animal House, Caddyshack) among its alumni.
The student of Russian and British literature graduated cum laude in 2004, then worked for the Staten Island Advance, which he had made comically edged contributions to as a teenager, and Nickelodeon. It wasn’t long before his ambition led him to send a portfolio to SNL. A year out of college, he had his dream job.
Jost became co-host of “Weekend Update” in 2014. Like Macdonald, a strong influence, he seemed slightly out of step with the rest of the cast. He looked clean-cut and camera-ready, drawing more on a sharply honed dry wit than improv experience.
Now he scores points with critics for impressions of Buttigieg and George Santos. He also scored points with Scarlett Johansson, whom he met in 2017, married in 2019 and has built a successful and private family life
with. (Although she does occasionally become the butt of “Weekend Update” joke swaps when Che writes material about her for Jost to helplessly repeat on air.)
Jost segued into writing his own material for the stand-up stage and is spending a good portion of this summer touring clubs and theaters. His first book of humor, A Very Punchable Face, was released in 2020 and is a good conduit directly into the way Jost’s mind works. He’s funny, self-deprecating, nonabrasive and aware of his audience. He writes because it’s how he best communicates. He states, in the book’s opening paragraph, that verbalizing his thoughts causes anxiety where writing does not. There is no fear when it comes to being creative: “The act of writing allows my brain to function in a di erent way. I can write and not be afraid of what I’m going to say.”
Explore these hot spots to eat, drink and be merry
By Kiko Miyasato
Compared to a lot of the hotels on the Strip, Park MGM is on the smaller side, but its curated collection of experiences makes it a huge draw. The property, which is completely nonsmoking, offers high-end, beautiful restaurants; casual dining spots from funky to whimsical; several nightlife options; one of the best live concert venues around; and a fabulous location. And it’s right next to T-Mobile Arena and the outdoor dining
and nightlife promenade, The Park. So how to narrow down all the options?
We’ve picked three favorite spots to eat, drink and be merry.
If anything, On the Record is just a visually stunning place to make one merry. With multiple rooms, each with its own vibe and décor, this nightclub is one of the only spots
on the Strip to enjoy a mix of hip-hop, pop and R&B all night long. Chill for a bit on the patio where an actual 1963 British double-decker bus doubles as a DJ booth and bar. Or check out the living room space with a cozy fireplace and comfy sofas. There are hidden karaoke rooms and an even more hidden speakeasy (look for the walls lined with cassette tapes) that offers guests an impressive specialty cocktail program. Another insider’s tip: Stop by the club in the afternoon and look for a host at the front booth who can help put you on a guest list for free entry (or possibly hand you some free passes) and tell you about that night’s specials.
Tequila and mezcal drinkers, listen up! Mama Rabbit Mezcal + Tequila Bar stores one of the largest collections on the Las Vegas
Strip. This colorfully saturated space is the perfect bar to enjoy creative cocktails using popular, hard-to-find and rare brands of the agave-based spirit. And recently, Mama Rabbit has guests hopping to the beats with the introduction of Latin Night Thursdays. Beginning at 10 p.m., enjoy $10 margaritas, buy-one-get-one Cantaritos Hard Sodas, margarita pitchers, $19 specialty cocktails and $25 beer-and-a-shot specials featuring selections like Estrella Jalisco beer and Tesoro Azul blanco tequila. Get your bachata, samba and cha-cha on when local Latin bands add spice to the night.
One must explore Eataly Las Vegas at least once during their time on the Strip. The massive hall houses all things Italian culture when it comes to food and drink—everything from fresh-baked desserts, breads and pastas to cheese, spirits, meats and seafood. A retail
section offers tons of Italian wines, grab-and-go eats and an assortment of sweets. And with summer in full swing, Eataly recently launched two specials to celebrate the season. Cool down with “Gelato alla Grande,” featuring all-natural handmade gelato and sorbetto. Guests get to choose their gelato or sorbetto served affogato-style, which is drowned in espresso or liqueur, or coppa-style, a shareable Italian-style sundae. They also get to choose their own toppings like Amarena cherries, pistachios, syrups, chocolate chips and more. The second special keeps peeps cool by way of “Spritz Life,” a collection of 19 spritz variations available throughout the summer. Each venue within Eataly will offer a few of its own twists on the classic Aperol spritz, even some nonalcoholic recipes. Who thinks they can handle trying all 19?

Last fall, Bellagio celebrated its 25th year on the Las Vegas Strip. In honor of the momentous occasion, Las Vegas Magazine highlights one of the resort’s most iconic offerings, the Fountains of Bellagio. It’s one of the most stunning attractions on the Strip, but it doesn’t just happen. The fountains have a crackerjack team working behind the scenes, 365 days a year, to ensure that the watery spectacle continues to flow beautifully after more than two decades. We went beyond the façade and captured the inner workings of the fountains—an operation that few are privy to.
Dozens of employees work on the fountains, including engineers, pool specialists and maintenance divers—and each employee is scuba-certified and holds Open Water Diver or Rescue Diver certifications. Get to know three of those employees, who have all been with the Bellagio since day one. You’ll also get a peek of the support area, where the equipment and mechanics for the fountains are stored. It’s a cavernous space just off the 8.5-acre Lake Bellagio that continues underneath the hotel. The inside look continues with the bat cave, compression room and the control tower.

How often do the parts for the fountains need to be replaced or upgraded?
Having over 1,200 devices, we are constantly replacing parts that are broken or potentially worn out. Our goal is to ensure everything works perfectly at all times.
What are some of the most important things you need to remember when operating the fountains?
Safety is always most important to us. Beyond that, we make sure the fountains
look good and run perfectly for the many visitors that come to watch them.
How many dives would you say you’ve done?
Over 2,500 dives.
What do you love most about your job?
We are always working on something different; no two days are the same. One day we may be diving, another day working on shows, another day working with film crews for movies or commercials that feature the fountains.
What are some of the best parts about working for Bellagio?
We are always working with new exciting projects, film shoots and events.
There is always something exciting happening at Bellagio.
Maintenance engineer
Where are you from?
I was born in Burbank, Calif., and grew up in the Los Angeles area.
What’s your work background?
Warehouse worker and a college student at UNLV.
When you got hired by Bellagio did you have the title you have now?
No, I started in construction security at Bellagio. I did that until June of 1998

and then I got into engineering and began working on the fountains.
What was it like when Bellagio fi rst opened? It was great. I loved working during the construction of Bellagio, especially when they fi lled the lake with water. I used to drive my personal vehicle in the lake before they fi lled it up, which is such an awesome memory to have.
What does your current job entail?
I handle daily fountain maintenance. I do everything from working on lights to diving and repairing pipes and structures. I also rig and drive a forklift, booms and scissor lifts for the Conservatory.
It takes WET (the company behind the design and choreography of the fountain performances) several months to develop, design and perfect a new song for the catalog. Some of the songs include:
In celebration of Bellagio’s 25th anniversary, the resort features a new fountains show:
Ed Sheeran and Andrea Bocelli
Cher
Lady Gaga
Bruno Mars
What are some of the most important things to remember when operating the fountains?
I always remind myself to enjoy the beauty and elegance of the Bellagio fountains—it’s so amazing how they make people
cry with joy and happiness and how they’ve become such an iconic Las Vegas experience.
How many dives would you say you’ve done?
I can’t even guess. We always log our dives, but after
This is where the magic happens.
25 years of doing this, I have lost count!
What do you love most about your job?
Diving and doing the lake maintenance (especially in the summer)!
Tell us an interesting story or two about your job at the fountains.
Working here has been the greatest job. I get to meet so many incredible people, from the people we work with to build structures on the lake, to singers and athletes who work with the fountains, to my day-to-day colleagues.
What do you love about living in Las Vegas?
Working on the world-famous fountains is a huge plus. I love that Las Vegas is a 24-hour town and much smaller than Los Angeles!
The main computers that control the lighting, sound and performance numbers are located in this tower. Here is also where you’ll fi nd the “famous” green button. At the top of the tower, accessible only by ladder, workstations command awesome views overlooking the lake. Each choreographed show is stored on computers. To start a new show, the fi le is uploaded and the green button initiates the fountains—a button only a handful of people have pushed, including this writer!
What’s the best part about working for Bellagio?
The people I work with. I have the honor to work with some of the most talented people!
Maintenance Engineer
Where are you from?
Born in Texas; raised in Las Vegas.
What is your work background?
I served in the U.S. Marines and worked as a Golden Nugget security o cer.
When you got hired by Bellagio, did you have the title you have now?
No, I started at Bellagio as a security fi rst responder before eventually joining the fountains team.
-Arnold Cabrera
What was it like at Bellagio when it opened?
It kind of felt like the fi rst day of school. You don’t know anyone, you get lost easily and you’re trying to make a good impression, but everyone is excited for what’s to come.
What does your current job entail?
I work to maintain the tens of thousands of components that are in the lake. I handle proactive maintenance—fi x it before it breaks. I adjust and calibrate the devices that you see during a show.
How many dives would you say you’ve done?
Well, I dive every day and I’ve been doing this for close to 20 years, so I have done a lot of dives!
What do you love most
about your job?
That it doesn’t feel like a job. Every day is like a box of chocolates!
What do you love about living in Las Vegas?
I love the heat and how I don’t have to wear a raincoat or shovel snow or
It’s so loud inside the compressor room that one is advised to wear industrial-strength earmu s. Inside this room sits two of the large compressors (of 10 total) used in the show. The compressors operate at about 3,000 horsepower and push through approximately 9,000 cubic feet of air per minute. Large storage tanks of soft water, used for the fog that drifts across the lake, are also in this room. The ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) panel that protects people and equipment is also here. rake up leaves. Working at Bellagio is awesome; your co-workers are like family and there are many opportunities to advance in your career.
What are some of the best parts about working for Bellagio?
Bellagio provides a wonderful, safe working environment and gives us clean uniforms, good food, high-level training, awesome benefits and everyone here has the same goal of giving our guests the best experience that they will never forget.
Inside the bat cave, located in the front features support area, is where you’ll fi nd the water-emitting devices. Workers clean and repair all of them in-house. The devices include three shooters of di erent sizes that push water straight into the air at varying heights. celebrates its reunion era with a Vegas residency
The first set of Los Bukis’ Dolby Live residency shows was an emotional a air for all involved. Sold-out concerts were populated by multiple generations of fans, many
of whom used the proximity of the May dates to buy tickets as Mother’s Day and Father’s Day gifts. Some could count Los Bukis music as the soundtrack to their earliest memories, others as triggers for reminiscing about adult romance. All were touched significantly by a band that began as a family a air.
The much-celebrated reunion will be just as emotional at this week’s performances, as the mid-summer dates are reportedly the next to last
set of shows Los Bukis will play in the United States (the final performances will be in September). Los Bukis: La Residencia Las Vegas was destined to be a three-chapter passage in the story of a musical legacy that began a half-century ago in Michoacán. Lead singer Marco Antonio Solis appears as part of the tour amidst a more extensive solo tour, but only in Las Vegas will the songs that launched him and Los Bukis to stardom be performed live.
The reunion has been well-con-
ceived and orchestrated, capped by a June 24 announcement that Los Bukis would receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in a ceremony (date to be announced) that will also recognize Depeche Mode, The B-52’s, Green Day, The Isley Brothers, Busta Rhymes, George Strait, Keith Urban, War and Prince. Solis, who went solo in 1996, is as revered as any of the Walk of Fame artists Los Bukis is keeping company with and receives Prince-level adulation in Mexico.
He’s the romantic flipside to Prince’s eroticism though, consistently producing perfect candlelit dinner audio ambience through the years for the band, himself and other artists. It’s safe to say he was born into the life, having demonstrated singing talent at an early age and a knack for performing by the time he could stand on a makeshift stage. Being the fifth of seven children gave him an audience from the get-go,
but it was a partnership with his cousin Joel Solis that led to Los Bukis being formed in the early ’70s.
Los Bukis (“The Kids”) released debut album Falso Amor in 1975 and had a jukebox hit with the title track. They blended Mexican music genres and pop music into their own grupero sound. Keyboards replaced violins, outfits reflected the height of ’70s fashion, and a cover of Morris Albert’s “Feelings” in Spanish telegraphed what was to come. The music of Los Bukis would evolve rapidly in terms of polished production, but it would always be sentimental and pull at the heartstrings.
Joel Solis and the rest of the members of Los Bukis carved their own legacy as Los Mismos after Marco Antonio went his own way, but by mutual agreement they did not try to re-create Los Bukis’ decades of hits in a live setting. They waited until the time was right to blend that onstage chemistry again, but the reignited flame could only burn for so long. Los Bukis is ending a legendary career with a final page, one illuminated by the soft glow generated by the love of their fans.

MASTER THE ART OF
PRESENTED BY IMAGINE EXHIBITIONS
Good vibes and good times abound at the Cabinet of Curiosities, where guests can explore the venue’s array of odd, wordly trinkets while also sipping on specialty cocktails. The swanky bar and lounge, located in the Horseshoe Las Vegas, is one of several immersive, alluring attractions brought to the Las Vegas Strip by Imagine Exhibitions. In addition to its adventurous setting, with statues, skulls and several other oddities to adorn its shelves, the Cabinet of Curiosities is also known for its mesmerizing menu of unique drinks. With

cocktails like the “Asteroid,” a mezcal mixture with chartreuse and lime, or the coffee-based “Flea Market Martini” — for those who may just need a pick-me-up — it’s almost impossible to go wrong when picking your (so-called) poison. And now, your lively experience at the Cabinet of Curiosities can also be educational. Join the venue’s expert mixologists behind the bar for a one-of-akind Mixology Masterclass, where you can learn how to craft and curate premium cocktails, while also mingling with equally enthusiastic cocktail connoisseurs.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Before you can move forward on your mixology journey, you’ll have to take a look back in time. One of the Cabinet of Curiosities’ many talented mixologists will start by teaching you the rich history of the art, as well as the tools, techniques and terminology behind it (Did you know?
According to the Cocktail Society, cocktails have been around since at least the 19th century, but the term “cocktail” can be traced back to the year 1798). You’ll learn how to blend spirits and balance their flavors for a harmonious taste, and ultimately create two intricate cocktails with your instructor.
MAKE IT YOUR OWN
Horseshoe Las Vegas 3645 S Las Vegas Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89109
Equipped with your education on mixology’s fascinating past and experience making a cocktail from scratch, you’ll be ready to rule your own workstation. Using premium ingredients — from spirits and mixers to fruits and syrups — and with the continued guidance of a professional mixologist, you’ll have the opportunity to create a specialty cocktail all by yourself. You’ll also learn how to garnish your signature drink and present it, so it has the aesthetic and visual appeal that make cocktails so compelling in the first place. Maybe you opt to put your own personal spin on a classic old-fashioned or modify a margarita to your specific tastes. Maybe you even create a new drink entirely. Either way, guests at the next dinner party you host are sure to be impressed.
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
For $100, attend a Mixology Masterclass and walk away with three cocktails — including that of your own design — as well as a souvenir apron and a recipe card. The 90-minute class is a great way to mix not just drinks but also with other people, as everybody works together to learn more about the art of mixology and ultimately become masters of it themselves. You must be aged 21 or older to participate. For more information about all the class has to offer or to go ahead and make a reservation, reach out to info@cabinetlv.com or visit thecabinetlv.com
