to redecorate my living spaces. I never indulge too much—new pillows for the couch, a switch out of lamps, a couple additions to my coffee table book collection. At this point, I’m nearing the need to rent a storage space for the overflow of items that I just can’t seem to part with. And who could blame me when beautiful design is everywhere we turn in Atlanta? From local designers sharing project updates on Instagram, to brands releasing their fall collections, to new local retailers hitting the scene. The inspiration is endless—and certainly hard to ignore. Our September issue adds fuel to this fire with a treasure trove of design ideas inside thanks to highlights from the Southeastern Designer Showhouse (page 82). Located in Chastain Park, the

CHIC CABINETRY
Rustic white oak cabinetry with a natural finish establishes a relaxed and refined tone in the kitchen by Morgan Creek. “The idea is to have the material speak for itself with as few embellishments as possible,” says Ryan DeCesaro, the company’s president. Built-in shelves transform the kitchen with a museum-quality display, drawing eyes upward to take in the bigger picture.
NATURAL BEAUTY Brilliant & Bright
Sconces through PDI feature three illumination settings that cast glows ranging from warm to cool.
Infusing a sense of elegance and surprise, the Cosmic Lava quartzite by Stone Showcase, fabricated by A Touch of Stone, Inc., offers a moody demeanor ideal for cabins, lake houses, or any home looking for a dose of fun. With dark rust colors, layers of veining, and dots of crystallization, the quartzite adds a dramatic edge to the kitchen.

Beauty meets function in this integrated sink. To add to the ease of preparing meals, overhanging lips are a track for sliding accessories like a cutting board or colander. The deep sink is fashioned in the same quartzite as the counters for a seamless look.

“The rustic white oak, dark and heavy movement of the stone, and stainless steel appliances all allow for a more relaxed and livable environment.” —Ryan DeCesaro
SAVVY STORAGE
CONCEALED GEM
Continuing the impressive use of space and storage throughout, DeCesaro concealed a pull-out table above the lower cabinetry. Gliding with ease, this unique feature is the perfect spot to pull up stools for a casual meal at home or quick drinks with friends.
Hidden wonders by Rev-A-Shelf lie within each kitchen drawer. Adjacent to the stove top, a lazy susan pulls out for easy access to spices and other cooking ingredients without the hassle of getting on your hands and knees to sort through unorganized clutter. Peg drawers make stacking dishes a breeze, while a neighboring
pull-out drawer is an inconspicuous spot for cookie jars and other guilty pleasures. And knife blocks cluttering counters are a thing of the past. Evading the dangers of throwing loose knives haphazardly in a drawer, the integrated pull-out knife block allows cutlery to be inserted safely and kept upright, leaving only the handles exposed.
HOT NEW FEATURE
The induction cooktop by Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove has solved the issue of accidental cooking injuries. Requiring exclusively magnetic cookware, the cooktop not only boils water at a faster rate, but will not burn hands or fallen food onto the surface—making it a breeze to clean.

BLUE SALON AND PORTRAIT BY XAVIER BÉJOT; BAR BY FRANCIS HAMMOND
ATLANTA HOMES & LIFESTYLES: From the grand entry foyer to elegant sitting rooms and verdant grounds, La Chevallerie delights and intrigues. What space of your home do guests gravitate toward most, and what pulls them in? TIMOTHY CORRIGAN: The Blue Salon tends to be one of the most popular hangout spaces. It’s the first of the public rooms that guests enter, but it’s also bright and welcoming with comfortable furniture, upholstered in my outdoor fabrics for Perennials. Blue and white is a favorite color combination around the world, so people feel at home there. AH&L: Entertaining can be overwhelming, and in the book, your use of unexpected spaces (like passageways) and items (like floral bed sheets as tablecloths) break the traditional “rules” of entertaining. What is your advice to readers on achieving an air of effortlessness when hosting? TC: Have fun and don’t take entertaining too seriously. Mix and match linens, china services, and glassware. It communicates a sense of confidence and effortless style while creating a relaxed atmosphere that will delight your guests. AH&L: At Home in France is a love letter to your adopted home, featuring expertly curated,
thoughtfully designed spaces. And while lavish, you express “even the world’s most beautiful room is not successful if it is not also comfortable,” reminding readers that homes are meant to be lived in. What would you say to those who desire an inviting space, but don’t know where to start? TC: I strive to create environments where people feel welcome and at home, and comfort is the key ingredient. Comfort is more than just being soft and cozy, it’s also a mental thing. Is the furniture the right scale for the space? Is the color palette warm and inviting? Can you let kids play in the room without being afraid they will ruin something? A room communicates that it’s comfortable in so many subliminal ways. With terrific performance fabrics available, it’s crazy to have a home filled only with fragile materials or fine objects, and we no longer need to make a trade-off between beauty and practicality. Mix furniture, art, and design from different periods to keep rooms from looking too studied and “matchy.” Fill your home with things you love and be willing to rearrange this regularly. That way, your home will always be pleasing and feel fresh.
“I always have a welcoming drink on hand when guests arrive, as often they have made lengthy journeys. A favorite is my signature Timtini: A mix of vodka, cucumber, mint, sparkling water, and a touch of simple syrup.” —Timothy Corrigan
At Home in France
In his third book, world-renowned designer Timothy Corrigan shares the joys of decorating and living in his Paris apartment and countryside château, both historical structures that have been lovingly restored for modern-day living. A must-read for lovers of French style, the new tome’s inspiring spaces encourage readers to design à la française. rizzoli.com

From welcome sips to thoughtful gifts, Timothy Corrigan shares his time-tested special gestures that make guests feel at home during their stay
On the List
“For a weekend party at the château, I prepare a list for each guest of everyone in attendance and their rooms. Inevitably, some of the guests are meeting for the first time, and it is helpful and reassuring for everyone to have the full list of names.”
SWEET TOOTH
SLEEPING BEAUTY
“Nothing is more important to a successful visit than a comfortable bed and lovely bed linens. I am fortunate to be able to use my designs for the Italian linen company DEA-Italy, and I coordinate them to the colors of each guest room. Invariably, guests comment on the softness of the linens.” 34
PARTING WAYS
“On the last evening, I like to leave small gifts for my guests, tokens upon their departure. It’s lovely for people to go away with something tangible to help them remember their visit to your home.”
SWEET TOOTH AND SLEEPING BEAUTY BY FRANCIS HAMMOND; ON THE LIST AND PARTING WAYS BY XAVIER BÉJOT
“I like to leave little treats in each guest room every day. This is nothing elaborate, often a home-baked goodie or a few chocolates, but it lets guests know how much I appreciate that they have come.”

Serenbe
Written by TUCKER BERTA SARKISIAN
If you’ve lived in Atlanta for some time, your all-time favorites hit list for the city surely includes some Steve Nygren-led pursuits. The Pleasant Peasant, the iconic casual fine dining restaurant—and its brethren Dailey’s, Mick’s, Peasant Uptown, etc.—was founded by Nygren in the 1970s and flourished until he sold all 36 of his company’s restaurants in the early 1990s. Today, he’s best known for founding Serenbe, the community in the hill country just southwest of Atlanta that has captured the hearts of nature lovers, thought leaders, foodies, Hollywood transplants, new urbanists, artists and their patrons, and casual visitors who love a fun field trip to the country.

$1.2M Steve and his wife and eventual co-founder, Marie Lupo Nygren (whose mother was Margaret Lupo, longtime owner of Mary Mac’s Tea Room), took their three girls down to the country for a day away from their previous Ansley Park home. As the Nygrens tell the tale, they drove up to a farmhouse that was listed for sale, where deer were bounding in the rolling hills, bunnies were nibbling in the yard, the air felt fresher—and they soon bought that farm. Fast forward to 2004, the Nygrens had built a community as a model for a way to preserve the majority of countryside, while also accommodating inevitable development (you can compare Chattahoochee Hills to the rest of the suburbs around Atlanta and see that the plan worked). “Many of our residents never thought they would live in the rural part of the South, and yet have fallen in love with small-town living, which can be felt in every corner of the community,” says Steve, who still lives in Serenbe, along with his now-grown daughters and their spouses, who returned home to raise their kids. 40

IF YOU KNOW, YOU KNOW
“Serenbe has matured into an eclectic mix of modern and traditional cottages and homes inspired by international architecture. It’s as diverse as the residents it attracts.” —Serenbe Resident Patrick Sharp of Mister + Mrs Sharp AGING-IN-PLACE WELLNESS CAMPUS
Public art is a staple in Serenbe, from mosaic installations to steel sculptures, and even custom, tree-like street lamps.
FUTURE Future offerings include a concierge healthcare concept opening in early 2025, which will anchor a planned aging-in-place wellness campus. The next neighborhood hamlet, Spela, has broken ground, and phase one will offer 83 homes starting this fall, which is part of a total build-out of 350 units set around a 4-acre park. Longer-term plans include a 110-key boutique hotel and 40,000-square-foot office building that will include street-level retail and three additional hospitality concepts. Joining the 40-plus independent retailers and businesses in the community are 12 new retail and culinary concepts, including Radical Dough, Austin’s restaurant and cocktail bar, and Nigel’s Bananas of 30A fame. Also opening this year: new coffee and pizza offerings, two furniture stores, pottery space, martial arts studio, art gallery, biophilic pharmacy, local artist studio, acupuncture practice, golf cart shop, and cosmetic dentist office, plus 10 new office suites and a podcast studio.
42
Sculptures, murals, and artful architectural marvels dot the community. The street lamps and lights throughout Serenbe were designed by Robert Rausch, internationally renowned founder and creative director at GAS Design Center. Nygren commissioned Rausch to create a streetlight for Serenbe’s first hamlet, Selborne, that would honor the arts and nature. The two collaborated together to come up with a design that evokes the white oak, symbolizing a seed of new thought growing into a sturdy tree. Each streetlight in Serenbe also marks the entrance to a nature trail.
BIG BRAG
Serenbe has won numerous awards, including the Urban Land Institute Inaugural Sustainability Award, the Atlanta Regional Commission Development of Excellence, and EarthCraft’s Development of the Year.
NOTABLE ARCHITECTS
At Serenbe, you’ll see homes from those including Keith Summerour, Bill Ingram, Peter Block, ai3, Kemp Hall Studio, and J. Ryan Duffey.
RESIDENT PERKS
The community attracts visitors daily, but there are certain traditions and events that the residents hold dear to themselves: Halloween costume parties, the July 4th Parade, Adult Big Wheel Race, and Fall Porchfest.

I recently read a bunch of 1970s-era Southern design magazines that I received from a friend, and what a trip down memory lane it has been. On the one hand, I have enjoyed being reminded of former design trends that still look good today, like patchwork quilts and floral chintz. On the other, I have also become reacquainted with shag carpet, which I would prefer to forget. Still, it has been fascinating to compare 50-year-old Southern interiors to our homes today. For one thing, you no longer see as many homes decorated with Early American furniture as you did back in the ’70s. I’m guessing that the bicentennial contributed to its popularity back at that time, but with the semiquincentennial looming on the horizon, I wonder if we’ll start seeing a resurgence of Americana. Not that I anticipate antique spinning wheels making a comeback—you cannot believe how many I spied in those old magazines—but why not lowboys or piecrust tables? One thing that hasn’t really changed over the past 50 years is our Southern love of color, although the shades we have gravitated to over the years have changed. In one of the old magazines, I saw photos of an Atlanta home bursting with color, including golden yellow, sapphire blue, and crimson—not all in the same room, of course. We like colorful hues just as much today, but I now typically see soft pinks, pale blue, aqua, lavender, and leafy greens more often than I do jewel tones. There is also the enduring affection for Asian antiques and accessories, which you might be surprised to learn are not a new sensation here in the South. Back in the ’70s, it was not uncommon to see a Southern home furnished with foo dogs, ceramic Chinese garden stools, emperor’s chairs, or Chinese wallpaper, all which, as you well know, continue to grace our homes today. I guess the takeaway from perusing these vintage magazines is that while trends come and go, the attention we Southerners pay to interior design never seems to waver. 45

SAY ADIOS TO THE frustrating feeling of not being able to agree on a restaurant—this new Decatur hot spot has something for everyone. At Casa Balam, experience the delectable dishes of an authentic Mexican steakhouse with a contemporary twist. Passionate about the food industry since his teenage years, chef Luis Damian worked his way up from dishwasher to executive chef and now chef proprietor of several Atlanta staples—including Oaxaca and El Valle—with more on the way. His latest brainchild Casa Balam settled into the thriving restaurant-scape of Decatur with ease. As a decade-long resident of the neighborhood, the venture was personal. “A lot of people come up with a concept and want to plug it in somewhere, but it doesn’t work like that,” says Damian. “You have to really understand and consider what the neighborhood needs.” Designed by Maria Dominguez with pendant lights and

The top-tier atmosphere meets its match with an all-star lineup of small plates, familystyle meals, and enticing entrées, such as the sea bass with miso and fire-roasted salsa. Looking for a classic dish? Try the Tacos de Carnitas, which blends three cuts of pork, all braised separately in citrus and spices. For a refreshing treat, pair your sweets with the Vida La Peaches cocktail topped with frothy egg whites. ABOUT Serenbe
Serenbe is a pioneering wellness community connected to nature on the edge of Atlanta built on biophilic principles. A neighborhood with fresh food and fresh air that makes wellbeing as natural as nature itself. A community where people live, work, learn, and play in celebration of life’s beauty. Where connections between people, nature, and the arts are nourished. Serenbe is set among acres of preserved forests and meadows with miles of nature trails connecting homes, restaurants, arts, and businesses. Serenbe’s architectural planning sets a new standard for community living and engagement by remembering the past while designing for a resilient future. Each of the neighborhoods have complementary commercial centers focused on the elements of a well-lived life: arts for inspiration, agriculture for nourishment, health for wellbeing, play for a joyful life, and education for awareness. Serenbe hosts year-round cultural events, culinary workshops and festivals, music events, films and lectures, boutique shopping, art galleries, extensive wellness services and relaxing day spa, trail riding, and more. Fresh food is another of Serenbe’s natural assets, with a 25-acre organic farm, seasonal Saturday Farmer’s Market, thriving CSA program and edible landscaping, including blueberry bushes and fig trees along paths and sidewalks. Serenbe is a place where you can come for the farmer’s market, enjoy a long weekend at the Inn, or stay for a lifetime.
THE ARTS at Serenbe Serenbe is a community that passionately explores, embraces, and expands the connections between nature, culture, and the art of living. Multiple arts programs at Serenbe have been built out of intention and have grown organically over the years. The ART FARM is our non-profit platform and place for cultivating artists and the arts through music, film, dance, and theatre programming, artist residencies, workshops, and public art projects, and it has been a literal platform for dinners, performances, and artist celebrations. One aspect of the Art Farm are artist residency cottages designed by the award winning Rural Studio architecture program. These cottages promote the creative process by providing artists from all backgrounds uninterrupted time and space, and a welcoming community in which to create. Hundreds of artists have stayed and been supported through residencies over the years. You’ll also find art in the meadows of Serenbe where ballets and plays have been performed, films are shown, and the Atlanta Symphony has performed. Serenbe also provides a forum for dialogue, cultural presentations, workshops, and seminars for residents, neighbors, and visitors to interact with cultural and environmental thought leaders and eminent scholars.

A LETTER FROM
Serenbe’s Founder Steve Nygren
When the first residents moved to Serenbe 19 years ago, we had the full community design on paper and only a few houses built, yet I could already see what Serenbe would look like once completed. I could see how the winding country roads would connect our family’s first home in Chatt Hills—now The Inn and Farmhouse restaurant—to all the neighborhoods. I could see the varied styles of homes with welcoming porches clustered closely together among the woods and how we would preserve as much of the land as possible. I realize now that my years in hospitality running the Pleasant Peasant Group—where I brought people together over good food in beautiful spaces—informs my current work and what many now call “community placemaking.” Food and hospitality have always been at the forefront of everything I do. Our country home became a bed and breakfast then an Inn, and we offered guests dinner then weekend fried chicken lunches that turned into The Farmhouse restaurant. Growing fresh local food is an integral part of the vision. “Agrihood” wasn’t a term when we planned an organic farm in the community, but we believed in farmers and connecting people to the natural food systems. We even integrated edible and medicinal landscapes into the neighborhoods so you’ll find blueberry bushes at the crosswalks and fig and apple trees along the sidewalks. You may know us for our extensive cultural events, staying at The Inn, dining at one of our restaurants, or maybe you’ve read about us in a magazine or newspaper or listened to our podcast, Serenbe Stories. The years we’ve spent in this beautiful community we call home have flown by, but underneath the beauty of Serenbe there is deep substance and larger purpose. We have created a biophilic model of how to build with nature rather than against it. Our purpose is to develop in balance with the planet by connecting people with nature and each other. We do that in many ways but it starts with our respect for the land, the climate, and our neighbors. The buildings and the sidewalks, the sustainable practices, the preserved nature trails are all important features that form the foundation for this place we call Serenbe. The people and personal connections energize those spaces making this a special place where waving to neighbors and strangers alike is commonplace. People tell me “to be touched by Serenbe is to be changed forever.” But I know, it’s the collective spirit of the people who make Serenbe a true community. You, our residents and visitors, inspire me to do more. Thank you for visiting the 2024 Serenbe Designer Showhouse.

Family Room, Kitchen, & Breakfast Area The intricate
patterns and palette of Jiun Ho’s Kalahari textile collection excited and inspired honorary showhouse co-chairs Mark Williams and Niki Papadopoulos, who used the fabrics for the vintage lounge chairs and window treatments in the grand living room. “It feels so fresh and abstract without being primary or expected,” says Papadopoulos. The designers selected furnishings with similar heights not to distract from the rounded fireplace wall, built-in shelving, and views of the tree canopy. And spanning the entire wall, a meadow scene on canvas adds a whimsical layer to the space. The fireplace mirrors the rounded vent hood in the kitchen, where bleached walnut cabinetry by Bell Cabinetry & Design, brass fixtures, and marble countertops and backsplash provide a clean-lined, sophisticated effect. Above the breakfast area’s tulip table, Harriet Leibowitz’s photograph is a cheeky wink to society life, and is paired with traditional still lifes. “This is a room for a family that loves nice things and a beautiful environment,” says Williams, “but isn’t afraid to have a little fun.” —Lori Johnston

OUTDOOR UPGRADE
MELANIE TUR NER , MEL ANIE TUR NER INTER IORS
Covered Porch Designers are first to know that outdoor or open-air
spaces can be tricky, having to balance flawless style with materials that will stand up to the elements. Designer Melanie Turner took the challenge in stride when crafting this welcoming covered porch. The space has terrific bones with a soaring, curved ceiling, wood-burning fireplace, and expansive views into the lush backyard, so thoughtfully chosen materials were key. “We wanted to have the feeling of a luxury indoor lounge space, but made completely outdoor-proof. Everything from the upholstery to the lighting and art are made to survive the elements,” says Turner. She leaned heavily on custom pieces such as a sculptural plaster floor lamp, fringed sofa, travertine side tables, and a Greek key awning and roman shades. She also added busts and Picasso-inspired dishes from her personal travels. “Everything in the room is completely outdoor rated,” she says, eliminating any worry about durability. —Jennifer Bradley Franklin

BEVER LY FAR R INGTON, ACCENTS OF THE SOUTH
Mudroom, Powder Room, & Hall
Not only a place to store book bags and raincoats, the home’s mudroom was designed to accommodate floral arranging as well as party staging via a large antique center table. To bring the natural world into the mudroom, Beverly Farrington selected a wallpaper with a floral-like pattern whose red and coral tones inspired the color palette of all three spaces. “I’ve been drawn to red tones lately for their vibrancy and how they can infuse a space with warmth,” explains Farrington. Other nature-inspired details include an iron bird and trellis bench and the adjacent hallway’s red grasscloth wallcovering. In the nearby powder room, a horizontal-striped wallcovering animates the space, serving as a lively backdrop for a white marble-topped vanity and brass hardware and light fixtures. Antique pieces appear in all three spaces, most notably a pine chest in the hallway and paintings of rivers, ports, and countryside settings displayed throughout. —Jennifer Boles

SPECIAL SCENE
PATR ICK AND MEGHAN SHAR P, MISTER + MRS SHAR P
Dining Room
Dining rooms are special for their dedication to one thing: sitting around the table with loved ones and friends. The idea of forging connections around a shared meal was heartwarming to Atlanta-based designers Patrick and Meghan Sharp of Mister + Mrs Sharp. “We see a chic friend group that enjoys cooking and dining together using this space for their weekly dinner party,” says Meghan of the potential homeowners who will one day love the space. “We’d also love to see families taking the time to dine together around this big round table.” The duo chose Le Parc wallpaper by Pierre Frey, picturing a pastoral scene punctuated by saturated blues and greens and more understated fabrics for the upholstery and draperies. A Louis XVI sideboard flanked by modern, sculptural chairs further dial up the drama. Says Patrick, “We love how the wallpaper makes the room feel special, the sideboard gives the room gravitas, and the striped fabric brings the room to a comfortable place that can be enjoyed everyday.” —Jennifer Bradley Franklin

BIG BUSINESS
DEVIN TAYLOR , DEVIN TAYLOR DESIGNS
Office When thinking about the office she wanted to create, Atlanta-based
interior designer Devin Taylor found inspiration in an unexpected place: the hit television series Yellowstone. “I was mesmerized by the juxtaposition of the untamed beauty of the wilderness with the sophistication of the modern ranch lifestyle,” says Taylor. In particular, the character of Beth Dutton, a female powerhouse, embodies both natural beauty and high fashion, a line Taylor walked with the design of the office. To complement the paneled walls, Taylor added black flocked wallpaper to the ceiling to draw the eye upwards, and instead of a traditional desk, she chose a black lacquer console table as an imposing centerpiece. “I wanted overstated pieces with clean lines and thoughtfulness on craftsmanship and provenance,” says Taylor, who partnered with Jimmy Stanton of Stanton Home Furnishings and her mentor, Robert Kuo. Natural light streams in from the oversize glass door to catch the cluster of turquoise Peking glass that adorns the table, adding character to the bold space. —Jennifer Bradley Franklin

GARDEN OF DELIGHTS
K R ISTIN KONG, K KONG DESIGNS
Primary Bedroom Designed to revel in the spring season, the primary bedroom
resembles a lush garden oasis. “I wanted to create a space that embodied the essence of springtime enchantment,” says designer Kristin Kong, who worked exclusively with a seasonal color palette of fresh green, royal blue, buttery yellow, and soft pinks. Lavish drapery envelops the space in a blue and green floral pattern, a botanical nod that is echoed in the daybed’s leaf-print upholstery and in the framed wisteria murals that hang in the adjoining hallway. An antique French armoire and carved bed give the bedroom a traditional feel that is enlivened by a pair of antique nightstands unexpectedly painted pale green. “Even when using more traditional pieces, I love pushing the boundaries with color,” explains Kong. A blue Oushak rug further softens the room, while a glass bubble ceiling fixture and a modern brass floor lamp add a contemporary twist to the space. —Jennifer Boles

BATHING BEAUTIES SOURCE
POWDER ROOM AND SAUNA BY DAVID CHRISTENSEN
Primary Bathroom, Formal Powder Room, & Sauna Glamorous stone finishes are the stars of both the
primary bathroom and formal powder room, two equally dazzling but unique spaces. In the barrel-vaulted bathroom, the shower surround, countertops, and border-patterned flooring are lavishly appointed in Calacatta Vagli and Paonazzo marble. “The soft greens harmonize beautifully with the deeper purples and rich rust tones of the natural marble,” the designers explain. The vanity cabinets, shower glass, and plaster wall border all have a fluted texture, a detail which also appears elsewhere in the house. A large globe ceiling fixture, sconces, and subtle LED detailing bathe the Venetian plaster in flattering light. A departure from the bathroom’s subtle hues, the formal powder room is awash in pink—specifically, a Cosmopolitan marble vanity top and sink, blush-colored Venetian plaster, and even a pink toilet. Moody brass lighting, brass hardware, and two elongated pill mirrors enhance the rosy room. Conceived as a serene retreat, the sauna, located on the home’s lower level, is appointed simply, with light aspen wood enveloping the soothing space. —Jennifer Boles

primary closet has been gussied up to become more than a merely functional space. “It was inspired by an Art Deco dream of a closet that one can relax in, enjoy a drink, and be surrounded by beautiful objects and clothing,” says Abernathy. A custom-designed Art Deco-style tête-à-tête lounger, covered in luxurious velvet, anchors the jewel-box space, providing a spot to relax beneath a high-style suspended light fixture. Luxe details include a Regency writing desk, a gilt chinoiserie mirror that hangs in front of windows, and dramatic velvet drapery. Interesting art is a highlight, including black and white photography and a pair of framed corsets. “They felt perfectly at home in this dressing room,” says Malone. SERENE SETTING
NISHI DONOVAN, NISHI DESIGN + STUDIO
Foyer, Stair Hall, & Terrace Landing
Upon entering the home’s foyer, Nishi Donovan envisioned guests stepping into a sanctuary of serenity. “I really wanted to do something that embodied a lot of my personality—who I am and how I design, which is outside-thebox thinking.” She thought not just outside the box, but almost out of this world. A three-panel custom cloud mural in the stair hall, made of capiz shells on tile, was a feat to install. The mural and brass birds flying up the stairs gives the illusion of looking skyward. Donovan drew from outdoor elements to create a space for “an adventurous soul who finds solace in a space reflecting their identity and passions.” The entryway consoles and custom wavy bench and runner follow the curvature of cliffs and oceans, while a raindrop chandelier, celestial artwork, and soft pale blues, grays, and white evoke serenity. As guests descended to the terrace landing, a cocoon swing presented another calm moment. “I feel like I’m fearless now,” she says of her first showhouse. —Lori Johnston

LEAH ALEX ANDER , BEAUTY IS ABUNDANT
Laundry Room & Hall
Leah Alexander starts her design process by asking herself: “Wouldn’t it be cool if … ?” In the showhouse, that answer incorporates balloons, florals, and rock star moments that “somehow totally works.” She began with the idea of the journey that liberated balloons would take. The hall’s fiberglass balloon wall sculptures are visible from the foyer and continue in the tiled laundry room. Art with dimension, a flower installation, and a scalloped pink shelf add color and whimsy. The beauty of floral patterns superimposed on photographs of grenades duped some people into thinking they were perfume bottles. “I really wanted the pieces to speak for themselves and make people think and feel something,” says Alexander. The art compelled her to splash real blooms on the back wall, using 268 tubes in the installation. Multimedia portraits of Jimi Hendrix and Jean-Michel Basquiat infused more surprise to the hall. “If you apply beauty to something, it changes how it shows up in your life.” —Lori Johnston 101

ECLECTIC ENCLAVE MATTHEW W ELDEN, THE HOUSE AT 396 INTER IORS
Bedroom, Bathroom, & Loft Storytelling is a key part of designer Matthew Welden’s
role as principal of The House at 396 Interiors, and he always approaches a new space by imagining how it will be experienced. For this bedroom, bathroom, and loft, he designed an “artist in residence” suite inspired by the British Bloomsbury Group—a group of intellectuals and artists in the early 20th century—but reimagined for the American South. The story goes that an artist moves into the home of his client and starts adding his own touches. “The artist feels encaged by the overwhelming formality of the client’s traditional setting, so he begins to express himself within the space by adding his own flair, most notably by painting the bed,” explains Welden. Gallery walls in the bathroom and loft are filled with vintage and new art, antique hook rugs cover the floors, and framed butterflies encourage imagination. The result is a whimsical, colorful space with personality to spare. —Jennifer Bradley Franklin

Bedroom & Bathroom In this organic bedroom, a moody hue
color-drenches the space and complements the neutral palette of rugs and furnishings, including a custom bed frame. Farrow & Ball’s London Clay provides romantic moments and translates to a dreamy feel at night, says Blake Colburn of Jaipur Living. His pared-down approach focuses on texture and natural materials, including rugs of Mongolian cashmere, silk, nettle, alpaca, and New Zealand wool in Jaipur Living’s new Fine Fibers collection. The room was inspired by “old-age European interiors that aim for sophistication with an approachable ease.” An antique Gio Ponti shield mirror and framed one-of-a-kind Manchaha rugs add richness to the curated space. A linen bedcover reflects the room’s understated charm, while sheepskin chairs provide additional tactile appeal. The bathroom showcases an antique rug while warm pink walls play well with the dark bedroom walls and ceiling. “It’s the old world meeting new and making it fun and cozy.”

CHERYL LUCK ETT, DW ELL BY CHERYL INTER IORS
Upstairs Lounge Designer Cheryl Luckett, principal of Dwell
By Cheryl Interiors in Charlotte, North Carolina, created a cozy space designed with overnight guests in mind. “Wedged between two beautiful guest suites, the guest lounge was designed to be a communal space where overnight visitors could relax and unwind without disturbing their hosts,” she says, noting that she thought of all of the late-night conversations her family members love to have when they visit. Luckett, who launched her eponymous collection for Revolution Performance Fabrics last year, wanted to showcase the style and versatility of the line, which features a fresh take on classical motifs with a bit of a Parisian flair. She created three distinct zones within the space: A large daybed provides a spot for a midday nap or to curl up with a book, a curved sofa is made for intimate conversations, and the third area features a game table for a little friendly competition and perhaps a cocktail. —Jennifer Bradley Franklin

FANTASTICALLY FLORAL VIRGINIA CHEEK , VIRGINIA CHEEK DESIGNS
Bedroom & Bathroom Virginia Cheek’s suite is a celebration of creativity and curiosity in a gardeninspired setting. The designer was enamored by the Anna French floral wallcovering—a nod to the Indienne fabrics popular in 19th-century Europe—and selected a green and beige colorway for the walls, ceiling, and the roman shades. Victorian-style iron beds with panels and cornices, tortoise finish on the bamboo desk, and bleached French chandelier and armoire augment the European feel. Susan Hable’s pieces are a playful segue into the art-filled escape. “As an adult guest in this room, it’s the perfect place to take a moment for yourself, sleep in, or read a book,” says Cheek of her Southeastern Showhouse debut. “As a child, we hope imagination and inspiration is sparked from the leaves that envelop these vaulted walls, as well as the whimsical bed panels and cornices.” In the bathroom, sconces with custom shades, an Oushak rug, and a small-scale grasscloth wallcovering marries the contemporary bathroom vanity and tile. —Lori Johnston

ALISON WOMACK JOW ERS, WOMACK JOWERS INTER IORS
Bedroom & Bathroom Feminine and serene with a subtle
focus on nature, the upstairs bedroom by Alison Womack Jowers looks as fresh as a springtime bloom. “I wanted to emphasize the beauty of the natural world through soft, flowing silhouettes and organic connections to nature,” says Jowers. The room’s design evolved from the elegant bed linen, whose blush-colored embroidery prompted Jowers’ choice of a petalpink upholstered canopy bed and softly patterned blush rug. The outdoor tree canopy inspired the room’s sophisticated references to nature, which include a branch-like brass and rock crystal ceiling fixture, raffia-wrapped nightstands, and swivel chairs with contrasting leaf-patterned backs. Texture is the room’s other theme, seen most prominently in an embroidered upholstered bench and an antique bleached oak commode. The adjacent bathroom is bolder by comparison, with a white, black, and gray marble tile floor establishing the space’s high-contrast look. A trio of black octagonal fossil plates joins white vanity accessories, tied together by a gray-toned vanity. —Jennifer Boles

TAKING SHAPE JESSICA DAVIS, ATELIER DAVIS
Lower Lounge
When designing the home’s light-filled, lower-level lounge, Jessica Davis took inspiration from the bright colors of spring and a large-format painting by Jane Fisher titled “Something’s Come Between Us.” “Since it’s a downstairs space, I wanted it to feel moody and cozy but still fresh and elevated. Sort of a modern nod to English cottage style,” says Davis, who accomplished the goal by using cool and warm tones, small delicate florals, and larger bold geometrics. She envisioned the Showhouse becoming the abode of a family of art lovers, who might curl up with a good book on one of the John Saladino-inspired daybeds after a day at the pool or host an evening cocktail party that spills outdoors. The space, though elevated and adorned with a mix of vintage and new items, is built to be stylish but not precious, thanks to indoor-outdoor fabrics and durable, structured furnishings. The welcoming lounge is an art-filled feast for the eyes. —Jennifer Bradley Franklin

HEATHER MCK EOW N, L AND AND SKY DESIGNS WITH MILIEU
Game Room & Terrace Bar
If it’s true that the family that plays together stays together, this room is a recipe for familial bonding. Charlotte, North Carolina, interior designer Heather McKeown stumbled on an arresting, large-scale photograph early in the design process of yellow cups flying through the woods, and she used that same golden hue on the custom pool table by Milieu. McKeown also allowed the home’s gently curving lines and corners to influence her picks. “Furnishings were selected for their curvatures and voluptuous lines, inviting informality and a connection of shapes with the millwork and rounded corners of the game room,” she says. Luxe elements such as the hand-sewn sheepskin rug, art curated mostly from Southern artists, and handmade, one-of-a-kind lighting add a touch of whimsy to “invite guests to cut loose and have some fun.” The light-filled bar with comfortable seating creates yet another vignette for guests and family members to perch and enjoy conversation. —Jennifer Bradley Franklin 114

brick and terrazzo, the lower covered porch is open to the outdoors but is as attentively furnished as an indoor space. “Instead of bringing the outdoors in, we wanted to bring the indoors out,” says Angela Means, who with Danielle Carney reimagined the space as a stylish outdoor game room with concrete ping-pong and games tables. Inspired by the colors of the sky and sunlight, the designers incorporated blue and yellow accents, including pale aqua tendril-striped wall drapery and charming metal game chairs with fringed marigoldpatterned cushions. Upholstery, a fluted cocktail table, and an airy ceiling fixture, all in shades of white, form the space’s primary seating area. In the backyard, the designers created three distinct furnished areas—a spot for lounging on the pool deck, an outdoor dining arrangement, and a sitting area with a sofa and four armchairs. BENECK I HOMES, BENECK I/COLE, LAND PLUS, SOURCE, AMANDA OR R ARCHITECTS
Trammell Shutze properties and modern construction in Tuxedo Park. Rigid symmetry, painted brick, and a cedar shake roof define the classic, clean-lined silhouette, where steel front doors and windows maximize views in the six-bedroom home. “Most people thrive when they live in a house that is bathed in light, connected to nature, and ties them to their surroundings,” says architect Amanda Orr. Curved Venetian plaster walls, barrel-vaulted ceilings, and fluted details on the staircase soften the setting. “You want to create things that touch people’s soul and their emotions,” says Vern Vanderkleed of Benecki Homes. Overcoming steep topography, the design-build team created a rear lawn with a forested section and artificial turf, accessed from the terrace level and monorail stairs. Nikko Blue hydrangeas, gardenias, and Chinese snowball viburnum surround Benecki’s first oval pool. “Benecki really challenged us to come up with something different and unique,” says Charlie Sears of Land Plus. END NOTE BEHIND THE SCENES
MY MUST-HAVES LINDSEY JOHNSON, co-founder and CEO of WEEZIE, shares her style staples, go-to products, and design inspiration Produced by THE EDITORS
best seller
“Our bath towel Signature Starter Pack will always be my favorite product. Our towels are truly the most luxurious on the market, and we are constantly launching new styles so you can keep your bathroom design fresh without breaking the bank. My current style obsession is our Willow Embroidered Starter Pack in green. The two-tone embroidery detail adds just the right amount of sophistication with a touch of femininity to my primary bathroom.” weezietowels.com
travel time
“I’m most inspired by my travels—it’s fun to step outside your personal bubble and take in a new place. Everything from fashion and culture to architecture and interiors get my creative juices flowing, and it’s amazing what ideas spark when you allow yourself to pause from the daily hustle and bustle. When I’m not fortunate enough to sneak away, I love discovering brands and designers on digital platforms such as Instagram.”
design inspo “Anna-Wooten Loggins will
forever be a favorite interior designer of mine. She has an incredible eye! I also love Helen Hanavich’s work, who designed the storefront of a favorite small business of mine, Odd McLean. The space is bright, fun, and filled with so many tabletop treasures. awooteninteriors.com; helenhanavich.com; oddmclean.com

color craze “We recently launched
some unexpected color combinations in a new women’s robe silhouette that I can’t get enough of. I love the tonal look of the color combinations, but appreciate how unexpected the raspberry and blue shades are together.” weezietowels.com
must-have scent
“Recently, I’ve been reaching for Nomade by Chloé. It’s sophisticated, yet fresh and lightweight at the same time.” chloe.com
everyday essential “As a mom of
three and business owner, I’m always on the go and I don’t leave the house without my mini pouch. It has all of my essentials in it and is easy to throw from purse to purse. As the name would suggest, it is mini, but still manages to hold lip gloss, sunscreen, airpods, hair clips, and a phone charger—and fits perfectly in my favorite Hereu Studio summer bag.” weezietowels.com; hereustudio.com
guest go-t0
“My go-to hostess gift is customized powder room towels or kitchen towels. Depending on the event, I will pair them with a favorite bottle of wine or snack. You also can’t go wrong with Southern Baked Pie Company, a local business that has plenty of yummy options.” southernbakedpie.com
