Q Olympic Gold Medalist Lindsey Vonn, born on October 18, 1984, in St. Paul, Minnesota is one of the most decorated American ski racers in history and widely regarded among the greatest of all time. Lindsey burst onto the international skiing scene in 1999 at the age of 14 and has since captivated the world with her perseverance and superhuman abilities on the slopes. She’s won four World Cup overall championships—one of only two female skiers to do so with three consecutive titles in 2008, 2009, and 2010, plus another in 2012. Lindsey won the gold medal in downhill at the 2010 Winter Olympics, the first one for an American woman. She also won a record 8 World Cup season titles in the downhill discipline (2008–2013, 2015, 2016), 5 titles in super-G (2009–2012, 2015), and 3 consecutive titles in the combined (2010– 2012). In 2016, she won her 20th World Cup crystal globe title, the overall record for men or women. Lindsey is also a New York Times Bestselling author for her debut novel Strong Is the New Beautiful: Embrace Your Natural Beauty, Eat Clean, and Harness Your Power and has served as an International Games Ambassador in the 2018 Winter Olympics and is also the founder of the Lindsey Vonn Foundation, which supports girls through scholarships, education, and athletics. In February 2019, Lindsey announced her retirement from ski racing and that same year commemorated her final season with the release of her HBO documentary “Lindsey Vonn: The Final Season.” Since her retirement, Lindsey has launched a production company, Après Productions, seeking to chronicle stories of sport, women, and determination. She has released her memoir Rise: My Story in 2022, detailing her years as professional skier as well as her struggles with mental health.

How did you first become involved in skiing and what inspired you to pursue it at an Olympic level?

Tell us about yourself, where did you grow up and what sparked an interest in competitive skiing?
I was born in Minnesota and started skiing on Buck Hill, a staggering 260 vertical feet. Even before I could ski, I was on the slopes with my Dad in his backpack when he coached at Buck Hill while simultaneously attending law school. I actually started skiing at 2 1/2 and was racing by 7. My introduction to skiing was thanks to my Dad, but I immediately fell in love with the sport, even though I can’t stand the cold. I have always been competitive, so the combination of my love for the mountains and ski racing was perfect for me. By the time I turned 9 I was showing talent, and at the age of 12, my family made a significant move to Colorado to provide me with better skiing opportunities. My parents also wanted my siblings to have a shot in the sport, as I was the oldest of 5 kids, the youngest 3 being triplets.
I always loved skiing, but my perception of what I could do in the sport changed when I met my idol, Olympic gold medalist Picabo Street, at an autograph signing at a ski shop in Minnesota. That encounter left an indelible mark on me and ignited my dream to become an Olympian. I went home that day determined, and made a 10 year plan with my Dad on how I could make it. Even though I faced many obstacles and adversities along the way, my determination never wavered in my pursuit to become an Olympian.

What kind of physical and mental preparation goes into competing at the highest level of skiing, and how did you maintain that level of focus and discipline?
L
It took dedicating my entire life to the sport to get to where I did in ski racing. To be the best at something is incredibly hard, but to stay there consistently is even harder. The world sees you when you win, but most don’t see the countless hours of training in the gym and on the slopes to get you to that point. I believe to be successful in any endeavor in life, on or off the slopes, requires grit, determination, and the willingness to make profound sacrifices.

Before my injuries, I was in the gym 2-3 times per day, at least 5-6 times per week. I never had a mental coach and instead built my competitive confidence in the gym, and was able to refine and perfect my routine by trial and error. I also learned from whomever I was around, and soaked up any exercises or techniques that might help me.

As an accomplished athlete, you have become an inspiration to many. How do you use your platform to encourage and support young aspiring skiers and athletes?
L
I always come back to my perspective as a 9 year old girl meeting my idol, Picabo Street. Her kindness left a profound impact on me. She was not just an accomplished ski racer, to me, she was also a symbol of possibility. When I encounter any young person, I have the mentality that if I am kind and present to that person, I can have a positive impact in their life. If I’m lucky, I could even help them aspire to achieve their dreams, like Picabo did for me. This fundamental idea is the core of my foundation. The Lindsey Vonn Foundation provides scholarships and programs for underserved girls, with the aim of inspiring and empowering them with any endeavor in life. It is not focused on sports, but about inspiring young girls

Led by Dubliner John Colclough, owner of Ireland & Britain Observed, we followed the trail of Irish fashion revealing a stunning collection of both classic and high fashion garments with elevated fabrics and eminent knit sweaters, coats and jackets, many of which are a lifetime purchase, inane trends ignored. The history of Irish knitting, the tailors, faithful weavers, and elegant tweed designs, illustrate the pride of the country. The fashion houses primarily family owned with some dating to the 1800’s, are a collection of free-thinking designers with quality and distinction a precedence. What made you start your quest into the world of fashion design? For me, clothing design was a gradual evolution of my process as an artist and designer. Thirty years ago I slowly transitioned f rom painting on canvas, to working with textiles... dying, painting, monoprinting, acid etching and chemically burning to alter the surface of the cloth. These elaborately worked pieces of silk satin, chiffon and velvet became the basis for my f irst clothing designs. They were dramatic evening and event wear pieces that were eventually sold through about 40 independent luxury boutiques across the country; f rom Beverly Hills to Madison Avenue.

How is your fashion style unique?
Our approach to creating the textiles for each Collection makes the line unique. Although our customers are dressing far more
casually today, each piece is still designed with the same artisanal approach that we began with years ago. For this seasons Collection we sourced a rayon matte jersey for our Casual Collection sweater line because of the way it ombré dyes across the garment, and utilized Japanese cottons for our Casual Collection tunics and blouses because of their unique texture after boiling in the dye studio. The combination of these exclusive textiles, combined with our contemporary, easy to wear silhouettes keeps our line unique.

What’s the most controversial piece you’ve created? I had always heeded the business advice of keeping my art and my activism separate. Then in 2020, in the midst of political and social unrest, along with a pandemic which forced the permanent closure of many of my top boutiques, that changed. I began hand painting political statements including “VOTE” across the f ronts of caftans, tops and gowns for boutiques and private clients. When Roe was overturned, our gown with “PROTECT OUR RIGHTS” emblazoned down the f ront was worn on the red carpet for a Broadway premiere. Our custom gowns with statements supporting Gay, Drag, and Trans rights have been commissioned for red carpets f rom the Tribeca Film Festival to the GLAAD Media Awards. These “Statement Pieces” are now a regular part of the line.

What’s the most enjoyable piece you’ve created?
A recent favorite was a look created for Billy Porter’s “Black Mona Lisa” concert tour. “Paint what you feel... I trust you” was the only direction he gave me, which allowed me f ree reign to play creatively. We incorporated Billy’s statement ”Respect Our Humanity” into the f inal look; a floor length tunic and coat with a billowing eight foot train, in blue-violet and metallic gold hand ombré dyed and hand painted iridescent silk taffeta. It was a joy to create. Upon seeing the completed look, Billy immediately requested a second, companion look with another of his favorite statements “The Change Has Already Happened” in iridescent fuschia and orange, which was also worn throughout the concert tour.

The Webshop currently has over 200 garment styles for sale, ranging f rom our Casual Collection sweaters and Japanese cotton blouses and tunics, to evening wear, accessories, and home furnishings. I’m excited to see what the next f ive years have in store for us!
What are your goals for the next f ive years?
My goal is to continue to design creative clothing that meets the evolving needs of my customers, including their evolving ways of shopping. With so many upscale independent boutiques closing over the past few years, more of my customers are purchasing my pieces online. So we’re moving to incorporate working directly with our customers for the f irst time. We’ve added e-commerce into our website SteveSellsStudio.com and redesigned the site to make shopping easier.

Q Tocabe Co-founders Matt Chandra and Ben Jacobs were inspired to open Tocabe over 14 years ago as the restaurant, Tocabe: An American Indian Eatery. Drawing from the Jacobs family’s roots in the Osage Nation, the company’s mission has always been to remove the barriers and challenges that make Native foods inaccessible. Tell us about you and your business. Where did you originally come f rom and what made you decide to go into the restaurant business? I am Ben Jacobs, a member of the Osage Nation, and I cofounded Tocabe: An American Indian Eatery and Tocabe Indigenous Marketplace with my partner, Matthew Chandra. The inception of Tocabe stemmed f rom the idea Matt and I had of sharing the essence of Native foods and community within a restaurant setting. Our concept was born out of the inspiration drawn f rom a restaurant opened by my parents, Jan and Tom Jacobs, back in 1989, located on Denver’s 16th Street Mall and known as Grayhorse: An American Indian Eatery. We consider Grayhorse as the prototype and inaugural establishment, as our concept was crafted in alignment with their distinctive style and presentation.

We strive to build more directto-consumer opportunities, providing further accessibility for Native produced products and prepared meals. Over the next year, we will be advancing our current prepared meal menu options along with launching ranges of protein cuts beginning with bison items, as well as launching meals specif ically designed for children. Beyond this, we have plans and preliminary partnerships to expand our Direct to Tribe program, deepening our commitment to feeding Native people and Tribal communities.

ocabe has changed and grown in a major way over the last year. Our original restaurant on 44th Ave has remained the rock of our company culture but we made the diff icult decision to close and modify our Greenwood Village restaurant into a full production facility to support our prepared meal development. This year, we launched our ready-made, directto-consumer Harvest Meals, and the Marketplace has grown into its own stand alone warehouse to support the volume of ingredients we source. We are now able to receive, house and ship pallet loads of products all in one facility.

Beyond the obvious of being a Native foods-based company, we believe one of the unique aspects of our company is that we are building a truly American food system focused on Native and Indigenous foods and philosophy. From a Native f irst, local second approach, including building in logistical methods f rom distribution, we f ind our true uniqueness lies not only in building and fostering a full food system, but an economic system at the same time. By creating thriving relationships with producers, we are able to maintain high quality and consistent supply chain management while providing concrete economic impact in Native communities and businesses.

Tocabe’s diamond-shaped logo has hidden designs based off of Osage-style ribbon work. My grandmother was a master ribbon work artist, and my mother is still a family ribbon worker. ach product in the meals are sourced f rom the Tocabe Indigenous Marketplace and local producers, but many traditional ingredients are notorious for their time-intensive preparation. For example, tepary beans take eight hours to cook and our braised bison is a 13-hour cooking process. We have been able to make these ingredients incredibly convenient, transforming traditional, time-consuming cooking methods into approachable, wellrounded and delicious meals that nourish the Spirit Lake community.

Orlando is an illusionary fantasy and wonderfully imagined. I’ve been an Orlando aficionado for years with numerous trips with my family to the city of pretend, the last excursion in July 2021, and on this current fall trip I was excited to share the fantasy with Tristan, my 16-year-old son, and was keenly aware that the mother and son memories in this magical place are precious and fleeting. The city pulls me in like a magical magnet that takes hold with a grip like Hercules, Disney’s strongest protagonist, or the power of Elsa in Frozen. With seemly unending creative magic, Orlando simply has so much to offer that one trip is only a teaser, and I’ve spoken to numerous Disney devotees who have been to Disney World 30 times or more. Orlando, officially founded in 1856, located in central Florida, became an eminent destination when in 1965 California-based Walt Disney purchased 43 acres of desolate Orlando land to build his second theme park. Unfortunately, this inventive artist and resourceful genius died in Los Angeles the following year. His brother, Roy Disney, a lifetime business partner, took over the reins and Walt Disney World’s grand opening was in 1971, and presently has expanded to 47 square miles of pleasurable creativity. Theme Parks Rapture On my first trip to Orlando as a youngster, I was overwhelmed, everything in Disney World appeared bigger than life, an exciting dream world with make believe characters that seemed to be alive and well and so happy. When it was my turn, I gave Mickey Mouse a big hug and everything in my world for the entire trip was glowing and virtuous, and maybe because it was Walt Disney himself who provided the voice of Mickey for some 20 years until 1947. The choices here are massive regardless of which way you turn with four theme parks: Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Magic Kingdom Park, Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park, Epcot, and beyond, Universal Studios, SeaWorld, Legoland, and scads of hotels, restaurants and shopping. I’ve always recognized why visitors return here time and time again. For this Orlando excursion we were invited to Four Seasons Resort: Orlando at Walt Disney World® Resort, which is nicely located, and among the best hotel collections on the planet, and I love the address, 10100 Dream Tree Blvd. The resort was first built in 2014 on 26 acres with 17 floors, and the vibes are like a nicely planned extension of Disney World with a five-acre waterpark and Explorer Island, a flawless setting to enjoy the nightly Disney fireworks. The Four Seasons Golf and Country Club is all-embracing with an 18-hole golf course, Certified Audubon Sanctuary, fitness center, and Oasis, an attractive infinity-edge adult-only pool, and for epicureans, six restaurants including the romantic rooftop Capa, a Michelin-starred beauty located on the 17th floor. Four Seasons Resort: Orlando at Walt Disney World® Resort, is the only AAA Five Diamond Resort in central Florida, and small pets are welcome. It was also a wonderful feeling to be greeted with a warm welcoming smile and distinguished service.
Four Seasons Resort: Orlando at Walt Disney World® Resort Orlando Reflections I’m truly a Disney enthusiast, and I advocate for first-time visitors to plan daily moderation for a superior experience. Having said that I hope I can follow my own advice, realizing what the city offers. A recent survey by WalletHub covering the best and cheapest local food scenes, compared 180 of the largest cities rating from affordability and accessibility of high-quality restaurants, and one of the top 20 food cities in the country is Orlando with Denver placing 11th. History also abounds. Most of us are not aware that Walt Disney, a visionary and highly trained artist, during World War I was an ambulance driver for the American Red Cross in France and Germany, and during that challenging time must have had thoughts flowing about a magical future, as Disney’s Castle is based on the real-life Neuschwanstein castle in Bavaria, Germany. Appraising Four Seasons This was my first visit to a Four Seasons property and I was impressed! After checking in and visiting our suite, I made my way to the spa while Tristan took a hotel tour and a look at the kids’ club and Lazy River. The spa, with 18 elegant treatment rooms named after Florida birds was the setting for a muscle-relaxing massage leaving me physically and mentally refreshed. The resort’s Kid’s Club is a splendid bonus for parents who require some adult time. The Club is widespread with a climbing wall and a selection of age-suitable activities, all within a large water park, and Explores Island, a tropical south pacific oasis. A key attraction, for me, was the wandering Lazy River where we enjoyed a few leisurely hours floating on the river that threads its way through flourishing colorful gardens, and a lush landscape. The water park is thoughtfully designed for family pleasure with a family pool, and we watched kids having fun in the splash zones, on the water slides, and playing volleyball on a beach designed court. Ravello: A Culinary Journey to Italy Executive Chef Fabrizio Schenardi and Sous Chef Mario Arredondo took us on a culinary trip to Italy, and a standing ovation is certainly in order for their creative virtuosos. We were honored to meet Sous Chef Arredondo who dropped by our table as we enjoyed Cozze in Brodetto, created with mussels, garlic and tomato, followed by a delightful plate of tomato and mozzarella focaccia, extra virgin olive oil and herbs a must, and adorned with a light muffaletta topping. My son, with a healthy appetite for indulgence, went all out and ordered the Manzo, a 16 oz, Prime Ribeye, seasoned with Fabrizio’s Rub, and with sides of grilled asparagus, roasted potatoes, and crowned with a rich Chianti sauce. Dessert kept our tastebuds captivated with a delightful Italian Chocolate Cake, and a Stracciatella Tortoni Cake, both ideal to serve at home dinner parties. The Michelin starred Capa restaurant with Spanish inspired cuisine, honored by Wine Enthusiast Magazine and placed among the Best 100 Wine Restaurants in the United States, unfortunately was closed for renovation. Dining with Goofy and Friends Our Four Seasons, Disney adventure came together in a brilliant Ravello buffet brunch when the ills of the world, if only for a moment, were put aside. Upon entering Ravello we were greeted by a vibrant and colorful ambiance that instantly transported us to the heart of Disney’s storytelling, infusing an extra dash of magic to our trip. Disney’s beloved characters, Mickey, Goofy, Donald Duck and friends flamboyantly came to life, taking us on a whimsical journey into the world of Disney. They provoked laughter and smiles from guests young and old, and the playful touches made us feel like we were living in a magical fairytale. The culinary team also went above and beyond. The brunch was a gastronomic treasure with something to tantalize every palate, while the dessert station with an array of selections reminded me of a child in a candy store. It was an experience that my son and I will treasure for years to come.
Disney’s Magic Kingdom and Epcot With a farewell wave to Micky and friends we hopped on the complimentary shuttle to Magic Kingdom and spending extra for the Disney Genie Lightning Pass, for quick access to the Pirates of the Caribbean, and Space Mountain in Tomorrowland, and then walked over to Epcot and smack dab in the middle of the Epcot International Food Festival where visitors can taste cuisines of the world which we did, and ending with the Italian Quattro cheese pizza, our favorite. Our legs carried us eight miles throughout the day and returning to the Four Seasons for some shut eye was a blessing! Dining Options The Four Seasons culinary team is a winner. The next morning, another culinary treat was brunch at Plancha at the Four Seasons Golf and Sport Club overlooking Lake Buena Vista. Plancha features modern Latin American cuisine with a Cuban twist. The Guava Pastelitos is a succulent Cuban pastry with cream cheese and guava, while a Cuban sandwich was loaded with roasted pork, a slice of black forest ham, Swiss, sofrito, and daubed with mayo and a spicy mustard. With time running short we took the complimentary shuttle to Hollywood Studios, and again purchased the Genie Pass to experience the Millennium Falcon Smuggler’s Run, and the Rock and Roller Coaster starring Aerosmith and then Star Wars Rise of the Resistance. For a quick snack and unusual nonalcoholic drinks, it was Olga’s Cantina, which felt like we were in a Star Wars movie. After another full day of memories I found the resort’s Lobby Bar is a destination in itself where the ambiance is animated with chatter and activity, and the perfect place to unwind after a busy day or to kick off a memorable evening. The two of us split a Mezze Platter delightfully prepared with hummus, sumac, quinoa tabbouleh romesco, olives,dolmas and thin slices of grilled pita. A Wedge Salad steeped with a Blue Cheese Dressing, bacon cherry tomatoes, and a blue cheese crumble, was incredibly refreshing, as was a medium rare filet with bernaise sauce and honey carrots. Dessert, always important, was Mexican churros, and their signature Popcorn Ice Cream Sundae, and a flourless chocolate sponge cake sprinkled with salted caramel sauce. It was time for our flight to Denver and we were leaving with lasting memories and the magic that Disney and Four Seasons offer. My Thoughts Located within the gates of the Disney World Resort, the resort offers guests an enormous advantage with exclusive access to Extra Magic Hours, shorter lines at the rides, complimentary transportation to Epcot, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disney’s Animal Kingdom, all in all a mammoth time-saver, and adding further enchantment. The resort is indeed a testament to luxury, service and the magic that Disney creates.

Georgetown Ritz Carlton: History Abounds Trisha Ventker
Visiting the Ritz-Carlton in Georgetown, Washington, D.C. I’m in the midst of timeless history and feel virtually surrounded by the historic personalities and notable achievers that have shaped our country. It’s a long overdue experience for me and my friend Lisa. Studying history in school sets the imagination a flight, but to experience it first hand is exceptional. It appears to me that every building has a story that could fill a book, as well as the nearby Potomac River, rich in American history. Our first president, George Washington, was born and spent most of his life within the Potomac basin and even surveyed the momentous river. Walking in the footsteps of vanished time, I sense life and antiquity surging round me like an enormous blanket, and even the plush Ritz-Carlton has history to share. The elegant fivestar hotel, a Marriott property, was created from a former industrial building dating to 1932, built during the depression when Franklin D. Roosevelt was president. Smartly, Ritz-Carlton has retained much of the original building with some interior red brick placements, along with the soaring 140-foot brick smokestack originating from the lobby fireplace, unique to Georgetown, and any other hotel in this part of the world. The property opened in 2003, and to me is classified as a luxury boutique booking with only 83 rooms, mine nicely appointed extending a broad aesthetic sophistication with products from the Parisian Diptyque Spa Collection in the bathroom. Dining with Executive Chef Victoria Montenegro’s Innovations I had read about the Ritz-Carlton service and was eager to see if the reviews were accurate. Our server in Degrees Bistro was Edward, a Peruvian, and he was top notch, as was Executive Chef Victoria Montenegro, highly trained, and creating cuisine with a touch of joy and flavors from land and sea. Noted for their craft cocktails, I sipped a tasty Mezcal creation that recalled visits to Mexico, and Lisa’s selection was the Casaba Breeze with house infused melon, kiwi, and watermelon vodka, all refreshing on a hot day. Appetizers were fresh and succulent, the Spring Crab Cakes with a citrus salad, segments of orange and lime that added a tangy essence, and a dab of old bay cream was delightful. The crispy Brussel Sprouts were nicely prepared with a sweet chili sauce and Tajin, a mild chili, peppers and lime seasoning, popular in Mexico. A house specialty tagged the George Town Cigar, is delivered to table in a wood box prepared with a slice of short rib and sofrito, which is a flavorful blend of tomatoes, onion, peppers, cilantro and garlic, blackberry gelee compote, a pastry roll, and touched with fog smoke. With a painful lower back that can be aggravated if I turned the wrong way, and often pulsating like a toothache, I booked a massage at the full-service spa that was abundantly relaxing. Diego, the technician, was especially helpful while the room and spa were quite lovely and cozy. Walking to my room, my lower back was greatly improved and thankfully, not raising a fuss. Diego’s spa treatment was a big boost for the day, and a wonderful bonus.
Georgetown Ritz Carlton: History Abounds The Ritz-Carlton is a property with a big appetite. Dinner at the warm and intimate Living Room with exposed brick, an aromatic wood-burning fireplace, lounge seating, and with Executive Chef Montenegro at the helm, another salute from the both of us. The chef truly created a pleasing dining experience. I enjoyed a dish prepared with heirloom smoked roasted tomatoes with a touch of basil and balsamic glaze, and I also ordered a medium rare Hanger Steak marinated in a local crafted Lager beer, with a side of French fries and chimichurri. Lisa selected the Smoked Nantucket Scallops with the chef’s special recipe including parsnip puree, succotash tomatoes, corn, serrano peppers, bacon lords and a charming chili oil. The service was superior and speaking with other guests they agreed wholeheartedly. The National Mall There was time to do some exploring though a visitor should allow a week or more to thoroughly enjoy the National Mall, the country’s most visited national park. There are an implausible 17 Smithsonian museums, galleries, and a zoo, with eleven located on the National Mall, in addition to the United States Capitol, Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, the United States Memorial Holocaust Museum, a multitude of other intriguing museums, and George Washington University which is located in Georgetown. I needed to immerse my mind to gather a sense of community. Flourishing Georgetown was founded in 1751, and today is an elegant upscale city, home to numerous embassies fully enhancing the international panache. Boutiques are bursting with the fashion of the day, dining opportunities covering the world, while the historic city’s shopping is equivalent to Beverly Hills, Rodeo Dr. in California, and Palm Beach Florida’s retail mecca, Worth Avenue. The downtown streets where languages intermingle in a soft refrain, are filled with residents, visitors, and loads of young people thanks to prestigious Georgetown University founded by Bishop John Carroll in 1789. The enormous Sonoran Desert, a colossal 120,000 square miles of splendor that spreads like a great tapestry of textures and grandeur across international boundaries from Arizona into the State of Sonora in northern Mexico, is one of the last great, untrammeled natural treasures in North America. I find this sun-blessed region of bright dry heat, brilliant low-hanging stars, and changing shadows that shift with the sun as they drape like endless silk ribbons across craggy mountain ridges, and hidden canyons, is a desert with tales to tell. One of the largest in North America, the desert, for me, is a mysterious and serenely silent land with intolerant beauty. Phoenix, located in the northern reaches of the Sonoran Desert, officially founded in 1881 with the most sunshine of any major city on earth, is blessed with a large landscape, and alongside an authentic twist, passionately celebrates the Sonoran Desert with the Desert Botanical Gardens and 50,000 desert plants meticulously revealing the glorious abundance of the desert and the contrasting grandeur of delicate flowers and plants that somehow survive in an unrelenting land. We booked in at the newly renovated Sheraton Phoenix Downtown, Arizona’s largest hotel with 31 floors and 1,003 rooms and suites. I’m traveling with Peter, my Sales and Marketing Director and VP, and we quickly decided to do some exploring since the property is immense. We observed touches of Southwest Arizona décor, while the spacious lobby was conveying energized vibes, as a nicely dressed lady checked in with a small dog that seemed to be quite relaxed like the hotel was her second home. The swimming pool was long and narrow, similar to a lap pool, and in the huge 24-hour fitness center there was high-end Technogym equipment from Italy, and for meetings enough space for any size gathering. My room, contemporary and well planned, had a bathroom large enough for a wheelchair. Anhelo’ s Wine Paring We visited Anhelo for dinner and were aware of their reputation. The name translates to desire or longing in Spanish and is listed among Arizona’s top restaurants with an esteemed wine cellar of some 500 selected vintages from Napa and Sonoma Valley, Oregon’s Willamette Valley, France and Italy, and honored by Wine Spectator Magazine with an “Award of Excellence.” Chef Ivan Jacobo sources his products locally, offers a seasonal menu, and the house specialty is wine pairing, so I gave it a try with six appropriate wines to enjoy with the chef’s creations. First up was a refreshing Cantaloupe Gazpacho served with a New Zealand, 2022 Sandy Cove Sauvignon Blanc. Next, a delightful Foie Gras Torchon, with a French Chateau Guiraud, 2014. Third course, Seared Scallops, lightly seared, along with a glass of French Louis Jadot Clos De Malte, 2018. The fourth medley was an appealing plate of prized Ossertra Caviar, offering a bold flavor evocative of the sea, accompanied by an Oregon, Walter Scott Cuvée Ruth Pinot Noir, 2021. A French Domaine Jean-marc Vieilles Vignes, 2018, enhanced the flavor of a Juniper Smoked Duck, and the sixth course, my favorite, was the famed Wagyu Short Rib, cooked to perfection, the French, Château Malescot St. Exupéry Margaux, 2014, a perfect selection. Dessert was a slice of Japanese cheese cake.
Downtown at the Sheraton Phoenix The carefully selected wines truly enriched each course, and brings to mind the longstanding cliché, “Wine is best enjoyed with food.” The space is small and intimate and a dress code is required for dinner. A collared shirt for men, and active wear clothing not appropriate. The following morning we visited Kahvi Coffee and Café in the Roosevelt Row Arts District, and what a wonderful way to start the day. Owners Jordan Taylor and Julian Wright have created a chic coffeehouse and meeting place for Phoenicians, offering high quality beans, a tasty menu, and live music. My Kahvi breakfast was several yummy pastries, a perfectly prepared French Toast plate sprinkled with tangy berries, and topped with a spoon of whipped cream, and lastly a vanilla latte coffee. Fortified, we browsed the Roosevelt Row Arts District with scads of shops, restaurants, cafes and boutiques, and the MADE Art Boutique with a hundred or more handmade items created by local artists. Via Uber it was a 10 minute drive from Roosevelt Row to downtown Phoenix and Pomo Pizzeria. We quickly learned that the pizzeria is Arizona’s first and only APN (Associazione Pizzaiuoli Napoletani) and VPN (Verace Pizza Napoletana), meaning the pizzas are made in the traditional methods of Napoli, Italy, where pizza was born, using a Blast-Cooking process in a wood burning oven. I adore pizza and ordered a small Burratella, made with mozzarella, burrata, hot soppressata, chili threads, honey drizzle and basil. It was divine with a soft crust and bursting with flavor. A Driverless Ride Riding in a vehicle without a human driver was a first for me and it’s certainly not for those who like to be in control. Regardless, it was strange and at first I was a bit tense wondering if the driver ever becomes confused or bored, but it was a short and flawless ride back to the Sheraton. Later I realized why no one was staring at us. Weymo in 2022 began serving the public with driverless rides from Phoenix Sky Harber International Airport to downtown, the first and only autonomous airport service of its kind in the world, and has expanded to the Greater Phoenix area. Via Uber we explored the Melrose District, an established and popular one-mile-long LGBTQ neighborhood located on Seventh Avenue between Indian School and Camelback Road, and in my observations with some of the city’s best antique and art shops, bars, dining opportunities, patio cocktailing, and dancing scenarios. Tagged The Curve by Phoenicians, rainbow flags flying, the Melrose atmosphere reminded me of Key West, with the many unique and high-end boutiques. Sealife at The OdySea Aquarium Peter, my Sales and Marketing Director, was remarkably excited about the upcoming Phoenix trip when he researched our itinerary and was surprised to find a huge aquarium in the desert. Peter loves everything about the ocean, is an excellent swimmer and snorkeler, a huge fan of aquariums, and in his home is an 800 gallon reef tank with fish that are friends. It was an entertaining and informative blast sharing the fifth largest aquarium in the country with Peter, gazing at 370 distinct species and some 70 exhibits. A highpoint was sitting in theater-style seats while slowly revolving past sea life. OdySea is the world’s only revolving aquarium and with a helpful narration it’s something not to be overlooked, and ideal for the entire family. It was a busy and enlightening day and time for dinner at the hotel’s Carcara restaurant, orchestrated by Executive Chef John De Souza and Chef de Cuisine Angy Dykstra, their menu influenced by the Southwest and Sonoran regions. We started with a loaded guacamole that offered layers of taste with a finish like a fine wine, and a side of lightly charred tomato salsa with a slight kick and tangy on the tongue. Peter ordered a Fork Tender Short Rib with ancho chile jus, queso chihuahua, a rich and buttery Mexican soft white cheese,
a base of polenta, and a sweet, spicy and savory heirloom tomato chutney sauce. For dessert we shared a Carcara Cheesecake Trio comprised of mango, strawberry and orange cheesecake pops. We noticed superior service throughout the restaurant, patio dining is a choice, and a large and healthy Chestnut Oak tree in the center of the dining room establishes a southwest ambience. It was Saturday, and at the lavish Carcara brunch we met Chef Angy Dykstra who has been cooking for Sheraton 25 years, hired in 2010 when she earned an associate degree in culinary arts from the Phoenix Art Institute, and loves the classic southwestern cooking essentials. We enjoyed a trio of homemade scones made by the pastry chef on site, and a creamy local honey yogurt. Shop & More Package With a little research we became familiar with the Shop & More program. The hotel has created for guests and Phoenicians the Shop & More Package where with an overnight stay guests receive a $50 gift card from the Meet ‘n’ Greet Phoenix area merchants, to shop at the historic Mercantile indoor marketplace where 80 plus local artists, creators, salons, and designers have their boutiques. It’s absolutely a VIP shopping experience with many handmade, one-of-a-kind items. Visitors said the Merchantile is one of Arizona’s top shopping destinations, and after some browsing, I purchased a cool hat, a Mexican handmade top and a swim coverup. Cocktail Bliss Our Phoenix farewell evening began at Bitter & Twisted Cocktail Parlour, and strangely enough with one of the country’s largest non-alcoholic selections. After years in London, Ross Simon has created an award-winning cocktail bar and menu, creating a style little seen in the top lounges. I ordered the Lovefruit Medley, a house-infused strawberry and pineapple vodkas, mixed with fresh watermelon, lemon and hibiscus juices sweetened with a touch of strawberry candy syrup, and served over crushed ice. Dinner was recommended at Little Rituals on the fourth floor of the Residence Inn/Courtyard Marriott, which happened to be next door from Bitter & Twisted. Little Ritual is another award-winning cocktail bar and restaurant with elevated cocktails using the finest ingredients and contemporary expertise. Someone said, “It’s not a cocktail bar, it’s a happening.” We enjoyed freshly baked Parker House Bread with chartreuse vanilla butter, the classic Lamb Lollichops with fingerling potatoes and black cardamon yogurt, and a childhood favorite, a plate of Market Mushroom Mac and Cheese. It was a new taste, as was the cabbage and cucumber salad with peanut sauce and chili oil. Sunday was getaway day, and before heading to the airport I stopped by the Windsor neighborhood to experience the Windsor Restaurant’s Sunday Brunch. It’s tagged a neighborhood restaurant with a wonderful patio, and a place where you feel at home. The brunch was over-the-top with house smoked salmon, an array of fresh salads, and selections for the kids Irrefutable Phoenix Researching the city for my readers, Phoenix is the fifth largest city in the country, young and vital, with a median age of 34.5. Noted among the sunniest cities on the planet with over 85 percent of daylight hours sunny, and Greater Phoenix listing an implausible 185 golf courses. Greater Phoenix also consistently ranks among the nation’s top cities in the number of Five and Four Diamond, and Five and Four Star, hotels and resorts, and a bonus for travelers, the Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport is dubbed America’s Friendliest Airport. I found the city complete with Quail International Lodge & Golf Club abundant outdoor adventures, to be a brilliant star in a meandering desert.

The Holiday Spirit at Hyatt Regency San Francisco Trisha Ventker
The holiday spirit is gently flowing throughout the city on rumbling cable cars and with a basket of good thoughts for the New Year brightly decorated with red ribbons. The city’s night lights are starting to sparkle and a raw wind with slight streaks of warmth is rustling my hair, while a crescent shaped moon is fighting its way through a light haze of San Francisco fog. It’s a wonderful time to cozy up with a hot cup of tea, listen to a string quartet and enjoy the hotel’s ambience. Standing in front of the Hyatt Regency’s towering 20 floors that seemingly reach into the clouds, I enter the hotel with the world’s largest hotel lobby where a Rose Parade marching band could rehearse without stumbling. A Guinness World Record for a hotel lobby, the 42,000 square foot space stretching vertically 17 stories in an enormous atrium with glass elevators moving up and down in a rhythmic cadence, and for a moment while looking upwards I became lightheaded, it was like the wedge-shaped hotel was ready to set flight into the night sky. It must be like traveling through hyperspace, the enchanting dimensions seamlessly blending. Everything here seems to be bigger than life with a lobby that is nicely decorated for the season with joyful Snow Village, a gorgeous 100-footlong holiday creation skillfully constructed around the lobby fountain. An enchanting train chugs through the Village giving us a delightful tour and setting a mood of good cheer. Snow Village was sending me brilliant thoughts – to put aside the ills of life and enjoy the moment. With the images of Snow Village still vivid, I find my room has a view that could be on the cover of a local marketing publication. After a quick walkthrough I find the accommodation is urban modern, comfortable and efficient with all the amenities, and spacious, as is the bathroom and even the doors, and not a surprise that the Hyatt Regency is the city’s largest luxury waterfront hotel. Opened in 1973 and designed by John Portman and Associates, the hotel has 821 rooms and suites, and a prime location in the Financial District, across the street from the Ferry Building Marketplace, 1899, and at the start of the famed Cable Car line. However, a favorite for me is the splendid cityscape views of the Embarcadero waterfront, San Francisco Bay, the busy Bay Bridge, and the bustling Ferry Building, which is home to the San Francisco and Golden Gate Ferries. The seemingly endless vistas are keeping my camera humming, and for me, the hotel’s location is clearly incredible with the powerful Pacific Ocean bestowing a special feeling of strength and size to the hotel. I’m here with Peter, my Sales and Marketing Director VP, both of us familiar with the city but not the property. The hotel has been beautifully renovated excluding a swimming pool, but for those in need of exercise the fully equipped and expansive 24-hour fitness center will do the job. Cleverly, it seems as if the hotel has been designed for both leisure travelers, and those carrying a briefcase, complete with a business center, a 72,000 square-foot event space embracing a 17,000 square-foot exhibit hall, 39 inventive sites, an elaborate ballroom ideal for weddings or the entire staff of IBM.
The Holiday Spirit at Hyatt Regency San Francisco We rode the glass enclosed elevator to the top floor to experience the Regency Club & Lounge and its spectacular location offers more unsurpassed views. We were told the Club offers a continental breakfast, a selection of appetizers in the afternoon, and each evening hors d’oeuvres and something sweet. Dining San Francisco Our Hyatt dining experience, one of three options, was in the atrium lobby at the Eclipse Kitchen & Bar orchestrated by Executive Chef Victor Litkewycz, originally from Detroit, who has cooked for Hyatt from coast-to-coast for some 25 years. We decided on a selection of small bites consisting of roasted sweet peppers with caramelized onions and fennel, a flavorsome cheese fondue, and a plate of Calabrese sausage and pepperoni flatbread. We also enjoyed Chef Victor’s elaborate brunch buffet. Dining in this city is always special; many have long noted San Francisco among the country’s finest dining locations. We dined at The Angler, featured in Denver Colorado’s Luxury Magazine’s Fall, 2022 issue, one of many internationally recognized San Francisco restaurants, and The Angler was another amazing San Francisco dining experience. Embarcadero Sparkle After enjoying Chef Victor’s creations, we took a stroll along the Embarcadero that runs along the waterfront from the Bay Bridge past the Ferry Building and Hyatt down to Pier 39 and Fisherman’s Wharf. With the holiday spirit in tow, the city’s holiday lights were glittering brightly as we entered Pier 39 past shops, magic shows, an immense holiday tree decorated with colorful lights, and the ubiquitous street entertainers, some singing holiday songs. But for many visitors, an additional delight is the infamous colony of 100 to 300 sea lions ensconced at the end of the pier sleeping and twitching on the floating platform, and at times bellowing like a band of tubas. They arrived at Pier 39 around 1989, uninvited, and moved out the boats, quickly discovering the floating platform was ideal for an all-day snooze. Appropriately, Pier 39 has a Sea Lion Center and Exhibit on the second floor, a staff member to answer questions, and a “Sea Lion Herder” to keep the Sea Lions from taking over the shops and dining areas and changing Pier 39 to “Sea Lion Retreat.” We dropped by Fisherman’s Wharf and historic Boudin Bakery & Café, in business since 1849, and opted for the famed San Francisco signature sourdough bread bowl with thick New Englandstyle Boudin clam chowder. It was the perfect choice for a chilly December San Francisco day while celebrating the season. Back at the hotel the holiday train was tirelessly traveling through Snow Village, the holiday spirit alive and well at the Hyatt Regency.

“Metallics this Holiday Season” Michael Moore Metallics and the holidays go together like hot chocolate and holiday carols. So how does one wear them successfully without looking like the tin man from the Wizard of Oz? 1. What is the difference, Shimmer or Metallic? Shimmer usually means that glitter of the raw ingredients have a sheen whereas metallic means that the eyeshadow itself is shiny. Shimmer is usually a more reflective sheen. 2. What is the best way to wear these tools with great success? Apply a matte eyeshadow base (sensational eyes) on the whole lid: lash line to brow. Avoid applying shimmer to the brow bone as this will accentuate the fine lines around the eye. Metallic makeup, like glitter makeup, calls for an even base so that it all goes on smoothly before applying any makeup. Eye and face primer will help prevent creasing and allow your metallic makeup to look even. 3. What tools to use for metallic makeup? Over the years I find a dense bristle brush to be best, such as our Cast a Shadow brush. This style of brush allows you to pick up proper amount of color and prevents a lot of fall out. For less application or a dust of shimmer, use a longer bristle brush that has flexibility, such as our Divide and Contour. 4. Metallics sometimes can be a bit too much, so adding a pop of metallic shimmer to the center on the eyelid as a focal point can be more preferred by some. Try it on a smokey eye, a natural eye or even a more elevated cut crease eye. 5. Different metallics aren’t just for your eyes! Dew drops are a great addition to your beauty bag. They can be used as a liquid shimmer to be added over or under foundation. They are so versatile that you can accent the cheek bone, use on the eyelid, use on the lips under gloss, or even on top of one of your favorite lipsticks! Eye liners can be a really simple way to add metallics to the eyelids. Use the Black Pearl or Chocolate Opal at the lash line to add something different! A shimmered lipstick with a clear gloss on top with the everyday face makes a simple but effective way to add shimmer to the face. 6. Don’t be afraid of the trends, but don’t be a slave to them. Make them your own and wear it with confidence. Just a reminder…no tin man.
