ABBY BARROLL BROWN WILLA PHOENIX

How has your vegetarian lifestyle influenced your approach to fashion and the development of Willa Phoenix?

My perspective on fashion has most definitely changed since I became a vegetarian. It may not seem obvious at first how the two are remotely connected. For me, it was over a somewhat long period of time gradually making small manageable and incremental changes to my lifestyle that dramatically changed my approach to fashion and ultimately the creation of Willa Phoenix . I was exerting a huge amount of time and effort thinking about what I was putting in my body so as not to consume animal products when it suddenly dawned on me there were multiple other ways I could change my habits to become a more conscious consumer in addition to restricting meat. I began looking at everything from the cosmetics in my bathroom trying to find vegan and crueltyfree alternatives, to my wardrobe, even my cleaning supplies- I dare say, age may have played a role as well. I am far less concerned these days about wearing what is the latest collection by the biggest names in the fashion industry that people are lining up outside the stores to buy. On the contrary- I, in fact, find great pleasure in sourcing new and upcoming designers who produce small unique individual collections. Willa Phoenix ’s debut collection “ Wanderlust ” was inspired by my love of animals and travel and an adopted ethos of buying better, buying less. My aim was to create a small capsule collection of shoes and matching clutch bags able to top and tail any outfit, any occasion, anywhere one may need. What were some of the challenges you faced in creating high-end luxurious shoes without traditional leather?

“I find great pleasure in sourcing new and upcoming designers who produce small unique individual collections”

in vegan leathers. So to that end I really have not had any issues creating shoes without leather. The biggest challenge came in the beginning as the concept of Willa Phoenix was conceived during COVID-19. It seems some time ago now, but looking back I do not think my intention was ever set out to specifically launch a brand as such. I was struggling to find vegan shoes in the market I would wear. The idea was simply to create something to my liking, and it then before I knew it, it took on a life of its own. As someone with zero background in fashion, I did not know how to draw, knew nothing about bio leathers, or even how to begin to manufacture a shoe! After sourcing a factory in Italy who were willing to work with me, we set out to produce the initial prototypes. As it was COVID and the postal system was not running, I had to choose the bio leather for my first two samples purely from PDF’s. I was not able to touch and feel the swatches so it was a bit of a risk when I gave the go-ahead to the factory to make them for me. To my absolute delight, I was thrilled with the result when I received them. They were so beautiful. I spent the next several weeks stomping around my house in what is now our Manhattans to see if they were wearable, comfortable, durable, how many holes did I need on the straps, what did I need to alter? It was definitely a process but one as far as the manufacturing, production, and quality goes has been amazing. How has the market responded to Willa Phoenix since it launched and what have you received from your customers?

I have to say I feel incredibly lucky to early on have found a wonderful factory with expertise

I have been incredibly humbled by how Willa Phoenix has been received. My limited impression of the fashion industry thus far has been nothing short of kind and inclusive. I think especially in the luxury and ethical space Willa Phoenix occupies, the other designers, stylists, photographers, etc have been beyond

welcoming of the label and generous in their efforts to help in any way possible. The feedback from them as well as their clients has been gratifying. It is such a compliment when a stylist repeatedly requests Willa Phoenix for an event. It tells me they love the product as well as the message behind it. As for my customers, the same holds true. I have had customers who do not typically wear heels and were hesitant to purchase 5-inch ones at that. Having had to work really hard to convince them to at least try my shoes on, they are complete converts. These ladies are now the proud owners of 2-3 pairs and swear they are the only heels they will ever wear because they are the most comfortable stilettos they have worn. That to me is just the best. I may have started out by trying to create something to suit my liking in the shoe department but to have accomplished making them extremely comfortable is just a massive bonus for me. What advice would you give to someone looking to transition to a more sustainable and crueltyfree wardrobe?

I have had many a heated but friendly conversation with people on exactly this topic. There are those who believe once they go vegan and embrace a wholistic vegan lifestyle they need to clear their entire homes, wardrobes, etc of anything using animal products. I have huge respect for those committed to such a way of life. However, when it comes to the subject I have my own philosophy. I refer to it as the Revamp vs the Reuse. I could get rid of everything in my possession with animal products, clothes, shoes, furniture, etc and start all over by purchasing all of those things over again, but ultimately where do those things end up? For me, it just means people are creating demand for more stuff! There are a lot of things in my closet, for example, I would not today choose to

buy again however, I do not see. if they are in perfectly good working order, the need to get rid of them. I choose to wear my clothes and when they have had their day will replace them with something more responsible. According to Earth.org of the 100 billion garments produced each year, 92 million tonnes end up in landfills. You do not need to reread that to understand what a dire statistic it is. There has never been a better time, more opportunity, or an easier way to be a more conscious consumer. Movements like Second Hand September , Shop your Own Wardrobe , Rent the Runway and others like it are more popular than ever. You do not have to transition your entire lifestyle all at once. My advice would be slow and steady wins the race. Trying to overhaul everything all at once can feel very overwhelming and ultimately could feel rather defeatist. When people ask me if it was hard to give up meat or make other changes in my life I always share this quote because it is exactly how my journey began and how it today continues. As Brendon Burchard says “First, it is an intention. Then a behaviour. Then a habit. Then a practice. Then a second nature. Then it is simply who you are.”

What are your goals for Willa Phoenix in the next five years and what new developments can we see from your brand?

I think any small business´ main goal is just to survive! Statistically speaking, almost 50% of small businesses fail within the first 5 years so that is first and foremost our main goal. Survive and keep going!! Beyond that, obviously to expand our collection to add accessories such as belts, perhaps a shorter heel, and of course continue to explore new plant-based leather coming into the market.

“I choose to wear my clothes and when they have had their day will replace them with something more responsible. ”

LAURA VILPPULA

ALWAYS ON HOLIDAY SWIM FLATTERING every CURVE

“ I aim for a clean and polished look that's never overdone. ”

ALWAYS ON HOLIDAY SWIM

@ALWAYSONHOLIDAYSWIM

In a world where swimwear often feels one-size-fits-all, Laura Vilppula has emerged as a beacon of change with her brand, Always On Holiday Swim . With a decade-long career in London’s jewelry and fashion industries, Laura brings a refined, Nordic-inspired aesthetic to her designs, seamlessly blending elegance with the vibrant allure of Dubai, her current home. Her collection, crafted for real women with real curves, exudes confidence and sophistication, offering swimwear that not only fits but also flatters the feminine form.

Always On Holiday Swim is more than just a label; it’s a celebration of life, designed for women who embrace their natural beauty and revel in the endless summer of the Dubai lifestyle. Each piece, from pastel swimsuits to resort wear, is meticulously tailored to fit and accentuate a curvaceous figure, making every woman feel both confident and glamorous. As we sit down with Laura , we delve into her journey, her inspirations, and how she’s redefining luxury swimwear for women everywhere.

Laura, what inspired you to create ALWAYS ON HOLIDAY SWIM, and how did your background in London’s jewellery & fashion industry influence you designs?

My swimsuits are very colorful. Working with gemstones has taught me which colors work well together, so I combine many different colors in one design.

How does your Nordic heritage influence the design aesthetics of ALWAYS ON HOLIDAY SWIM?

My cuts are all about precision and strategic styling. I aim for a clean and polished look that's never overdone.

What challenges did you face when starting a premium swimwear brand in Dubai, and how did you overcome them?

I began my business during the pandemic, so we encountered various challenges such as sourcing fabric and dealing with factories that were experiencing lockdowns. However, it was an unusual time for everyone, so I believe that everyone understood that there would be delays, and that was okay.

Your brand is renowned for its perfected fit, fabrication, and garment structure. Can you

elaborate on the process behind creating swimwear that is true to size and caters to curvaceous women?

We pay super close attention to fit as that was the reason I started my brand, I would find it hard to find bikini tops that would fit my naturally big bust. I fit every sample on myself and we make changes as long as it´s perfect. If I wouldn’t wear it myself it does not go to production.

What elements do you believe are essential in designing swimwear that makes bigger-busted and wider-hipped women feel confident and fabulous?

Cut is very important; it should be done in the right places. When done well, it can make you look and feel much slimmer. We want our customers to feel great in our swimsuits, and we always keep this in mind.

How do you ensure that your swimwear maintains its luxurious feel and fit after multiple wears and washes?

We use only premium fabrics from Italy.

Can you share some insights into your design process? Where do you draw inspiration from for your pastel designs and resort wear?

I find inspiration in my travels and from fashion. For example, I once came across a beautiful

“Our biggest moment was when Britney Spears wore our pink bikini. ”
“We pay super close attention to fit as that was the reason I started my brand. ”

floor tile in Capri, which inspired me to create a print. I believe that beauty and inspiration can be found everywhere, even in everyday life. Sometimes, I notice functional issues with swimsuits from other brands and use that as inspiration. Additionally, I enjoy supporting other female-owned companies and often purchase products from them.

Dubai is known for its luxury and vibrant lifestyle. How does the city influence your brand’s vision and collection?

My swimwear is bright yet classy. It's for the chic woman who wants to wear colors but still look stylish without showing too much skin.

What role does sustainability play in ALWAYS ON HOLIDAY SWIM, and what steps are you taking to ensure your brand is environmentally responsible?

We have recently switched to using only recycled fabrics, and all our new styles launching this month are made from Repreve recycled fabric.

Your swimwear seamlessly transitions from poolside to summer evenings. How do you balance functionality and elegance in your designs?

All our designs are created with the idea that people often go from the beach straight to lunch, so they need to look good wearing a caftan on top. Our one pieces can also be worn as tops and paired with a skirt or sarong. We also have beachwear in our collection to pair with some pieces.

As a female entrepreneur in the fashion industry, what advice do you have for other women looking to start their own fashion brands?

If you're looking to start a brand from scratch, consider taking the "Start and Scale" course by Foundr online. It offers valuable tips and a step-by-step process for launching any brand. It's important to reserve finances because we often make costly mistakes in the beginning, so be prepared for that and stay determined. Validate your product or idea with friends and family before moving forward and then proceed to create samples.

Can you tell us about a particularly memorable moment or milestone in your journey with ALWAYS ON HOLIDAY SWIM?

Our biggest moment was when Britney Spears wore our pink bikini.

How do you stay ahead of swimwear trends while maintaining the timeless elegance that your brand is known for?

We prefer to create trends instead of following them. For instance, we were the first brand to incorporate mesh into our swimsuits, setting a trend that others have since followed, and now you see it everywhere.

What do you think sets ALWAYS ON HOLIDAY SWIM apart from other swimwear brands in the market?

We have a fun, classy swimwear brand that caters to all women, not just skinny girls. The prices are reasonable as well.

Looking ahead, what are your future plans for ALWAYS ON HOLIDAY SWIM? Are there any upcoming collections or collaborations we should be excited about?

We are planning to showcase at Miami Swim Week in the summer of 2025 and begin wholesaling.

“We have a fun, classy swimwear brand that caters to all women, not just skinny girls. ”

PRIVATE ISLAND ESCAPE TO PARADISE: DISCOVER CAMBODIA’S HIDDEN GEM TRAVEL SONG SAA

Located in the heart of the pristine Koh Rong archipelago, Song Saa Private Island is a slice of heaven that seamlessly blends luxury with sustainability. This exclusive retreat, set amidst the lush landscapes and turquoise waters of Cambodia , offers an unparalleled experience for those seeking both serenity and sophistication.

A LUXURIOUS HIDEAWAY

Song Saa , which translates to "The Sweethearts" in Khmer , lives up to its name by creating a romantic and intimate atmosphere for its guests. The island is home to a collection of luxurious overwater and jungle villas, each designed to harmonize with the natural surroundings while offering all the modern comforts one could desire.

The overwater villas, perched above the crystalclear waters of the Gulf of Thailand , provide direct access to the sea, where you can start your

day with a refreshing dip or simply bask in the sun on your private deck. These villas are designed with natural materials, featuring thatched roofs, driftwood furniture, and expansive glass walls that blur the line between indoor and outdoor living. Imagine waking up to the sound of gentle waves and stepping out onto your deck to witness a breathtaking sunrise over the horizon.

For those who prefer to be surrounded by lush greenery, the jungle villas offer an equally enchanting experience. Hidden among the tropical foliage, these villas provide a secluded

haven where you can immerse yourself in nature's embrace. Each villa is equipped with a private pool, perfect for cooling off after a day of exploring the island's wonders.

SUSTAINABILITY AT ITS CORE

What sets Song Saa apart from other luxury resorts is its unwavering commitment to sustainability and conservation. The founders, Rory and Melita Hunter , have made it their mission to protect the natural beauty of the island and its surrounding marine environment. From the moment you arrive, it’s evident that every aspect of the resort has been thoughtfully designed with the environment in mind.

The Song Saa Foundation , established by the resort, works tirelessly to preserve the delicate ecosystems of the Koh Rong archipelago. Guests are encouraged to participate in conservation efforts, such as joining marine biologists on snorkeling trips to monitor coral health or taking part in tree planting initiatives to combat deforestation.

The resort itself is a model of eco-friendly practices. Solar energy powers the island, and waste is carefully managed through composting and recycling programs. The villas are constructed using reclaimed materials, and the restaurant sources its ingredients from local farmers and fishermen, ensuring a fresh and sustainable dining experience.

INDULGE IN RELAXATION AND ADVENTURE

While Song Saa offers an ideal setting for relaxation, it also caters to those with a sense of adventure. The surrounding waters are a playground for water sports enthusiasts, with activities such as kayaking, paddleboarding, and snorkeling available for guests to explore the vibrant coral reefs and marine life. For those who prefer to stay on land, guided nature walks, yoga sessions, and cooking classes provide a deeper connection to the island’s culture and environment.

The resort's spa, perched on the edge of the island with panoramic views of the sea, offers a sanctuary for rejuvenation. Inspired by traditional Khmer healing practices, the spa’s treatments use natural, locally sourced ingredients to soothe both body and soul. Whether you choose a relaxing massage, a detoxifying body scrub, or a holistic wellness program, you’ll leave feeling renewed and invigorated.

A DINING EXPERIENCE LIKE NO OTHER

Culinary delights await at Song Saa ’s two exceptional dining venues. The Vista Bar and Restaurant , located over the water, serves a tantalizing menu of Khmer and Western cuisine, crafted from the freshest local ingredients. Enjoy a candlelit dinner under the stars, accompanied by the gentle sound of the waves below. For a more casual setting, the Driftwood Bar offers light bites and cocktails, perfect for a laid-back lunch by the beach or a sunset toast.

For an unforgettable dining experience, the resort also offers private, bespoke dining options. Whether it’s a picnic on a secluded beach, a barbecue in your villa, or a romantic dinner on the sand, the Song Saa team will ensure every detail is tailored to your desires.

INTERVIEW

CAYA HEFNER

Versatility AND Determination

Caya Hefner 's journey is a compelling narrative of resilience, adaptability, and passion. As she embarks on the new chapter of motherhood, her experiences in modeling and real estate have taken on a fresh perspective, intertwining her personal and professional worlds in profound ways. From gracing the catwalks and dazzling in front of the camera to making strategic moves in the real estate market, Caya 's multifaceted career is a testament to her versatility and determination. Her pregnancy has brought about a new lens through which she views her diverse endeavors, leading her to embrace projects that resonate with her evolving identity.

In this exclusive interview, we delve into how Caya ’s Indonesian roots have influenced her ambitious path, the insights gained from her extensive travels, and the seamless transition from aspiring plastic surgeon to a powerhouse in modeling and real estate. As she prepares for the arrival of her child, Caya shares valuable lessons, advice for aspiring women in real estate, and her vision for the future.

PHOTOGRAPHER: NATASHA REEV @natasha_reev hair and makeup: IRENA MURATKINA @makeup.artist.losangeles

Caya, congratulations on your pregnancy! How has this new chapter influenced your multifaceted career in modeling and real estate?

Thank you. It's been good so far. It's giving me a different perspective on how to look at the world now. In regards to modeling and real estate, I'm still active in both. In the modeling world, it's a bit different nowadays than what I had in the past. I've worked from hotels to products, and now baby stuff. In real estate, when the lead is good and makes sense, I'll jump on it. Ha... I wish we had a crystal ball that could tell us when to buy properties. LOL

Growing up in Indonesia, how did your cultural background shape your journey and ambitions in modeling and now real estate?

Growing up in Indonesia has given me many different outlooks, which I'm so grateful for because it has helped me to be where I am now. My home culture is pretty much old-fashioned, but growing up, I felt like I belonged somewhere where I could be who I want to be, do what I want to do, and create the life path that I know I can learn from, share, and make a big difference in the community.

With your extensive travel experiences from modeling, how have different cultures and environments inspired your work in real estate?

who passed away. I thought about going back to school, but then I saw all these wealthy people where I used to live doing something in real estate. So, I decided to join a real estate event/ company that opened my eyes in so many ways about real estate. I loved what I learned and the people I met, which gave me the confidence to do what I'm doing in real estate. Needless to say, I'm sort of a surgeon, not on a human body but on homes. lol... I find these homes that need some love, fix them up, make them beautiful, and sell them. Haha... As for modeling, I've been doing it since I was a teenager back in my country. I used to compete in some beauty pageants, prints, or just those competitions. I did several in the US until I think 2015.

As a pregnant woman balancing two demanding careers, what strategies do you use to manage your time and energy effectively?

“Traveling has opened up so many opportunities, windows and networks along the way”

Traveling has opened up so many opportunities, windows, and networks along the way. I get to learn what makes each city or country thrive and where I can invest and get a better return. It's all about the people you meet and connect with along the way and learning from them. You originally left Indonesia to pursue medical school. How did you navigate the transition from a medical path to a thriving career in modeling and now real estate?

That was the plan, but it got shifted. Haha... I came to the US as an international student wanting to become a plastic surgeon. I wanted to make everything beautiful and have people feel good about themselves. Things changed when I lived in Beverly Hills with my husband,

Modeling and real estate aren't taking too much of my time, especially during pregnancy. I had another venture, a café called Caya’s Café . I had to sell it because it took so much of my time away from my loved ones. As my pregnancy nears its end, I have to prioritize what is more important to me, which is the baby and my personal life. So, sadly, I sold the shop, but I still have the business because I do some private events, parties, or festivals. Overall, you have to take a moment and look at everything you have in front of you and make a list of what needs to be taken care of now or eliminated. That way, you can use your time wiser to do things that are more meaningful to you.

Real estate is a significant part of your career now. What drew you to this field, and how do you find it complements your work in modeling?

Modeling has been part of me for a while now, and I do it for fun. However, real estate has been with me for the past eight years. I enjoy it because of the people, the security, and the beauty that I can create at the end.

Can you share a memorable moment from your real estate career that has profoundly impacted you, especially one that resonates with your current life as a mother-to-be?

My memorable moment would be continuing

“I've heard this before: your network is your net worth. ”

what I have been doing and growing bigger than when I started.

How do you envision your career evolving after the birth of your child, particularly in balancing your roles in modeling and real estate?

Modeling and real estate aren't the only things I do currently. I also have bath skin products called BombBae and Caya’s Café , where I only do private events now. I think I'm going to need a break for the rest of 2024 as my baby girl is arriving in September. I want to give my full attention to her and be a great mother. I will do more stuff maybe closer to the holidays and plan for 2025 with new schedules and better preparation.

What have been the most significant challenges you’ve faced in your journey across these diverse careers, and how have you overcome them?

The most significant challenge I have faced in all I have accomplished was finding solid employees who share my vision. I work through each challenge and give them the opportunity to learn and grow, even though I still have to remind them often.

How has your pregnancy influenced your approach to your work in real estate, and do you find yourself exploring new strategies or ideas as a result?

This pregnancy has been a big change and journey in my life because it surely changes your vision to be a better person. You are now a role model for your child, someone they look up to and learn from daily. So, I’d say balance is everything, and knowing what you can do right then is essential. I believe we evolve every day and learn daily from the day before. I remind myself to stay humble and be grateful for any opportunities that arise, good or bad.

In your real estate career, what have been some of the most rewarding projects you’ve worked on, and how do you integrate your personal style and creativity into your work?

Some of the most rewarding projects I have worked on involved finding properties that

nobody wanted, bringing my ideas or visions to life, and making sense of the surrounding area. Of course, everyone has their own key points of comfort and end goals.

What are some key lessons you've learned from your modeling career that have helped you succeed in the real estate industry?

Be yourself, stay true to who you are, be disciplined, have plans/goals, and don’t be afraid of failure or people saying no to you.

How do you manage to stay updated with the latest trends and developments in the real estate market while balancing your modeling career?

By surrounding yourself with well-minded people who share the same direction as you and learning from them. Everyone here is meant to learn from one another.

Can you tell us about a challenging real estate deal you successfully closed and what you learned from the experience?

Don't take things personally. Each deal will teach you something.

What advice would you give to women who aspire to break into the real estate industry, especially those who may also be balancing other demanding careers?

I've heard this before: your network is your net worth. Educate yourself from those who have traveled that road before and learn from them. It’s not always the case for me because often I try to do something a bit different because I like to challenge myself. But if you can't afford to lose it, don't try to lose it. It's better to learn from others' mistakes than your own so you won’t waste your time. Time is everything.

Finally, as you prepare for motherhood, what message do you want to share with your fans about pursuing their passions and balancing multiple roles in life?

Take it one day at a time. Focus on where you are headed and keep going. You will be amazed at what you have accomplished, and definitely stay consistent in everything you do, personal life, business, and just about everything.

“Educate yourself from those who have traveled that road before and learn from them.”
“Don't take things personally. Each deal will teach you something. ”

YULIA ZENMA ZENMA Founder & Designer

Can you share the story behind the founding of Zenma in 2019?

What motivated you to start this revolutionary luxury fashion house?

When I came to America and attended Burning Man for the first time, it absolutely blew me away. The experience was unforgettable; it felt like stepping into a different world where reality and self-expression knew no bounds. I was mesmerized by the unique and eclectic styles of clothing I saw there, unlike anything I had encountered before. This incredible display of creativity and freedom inspired me to start creating my own artful fashion pieces. It all started as a personal endeavor—I made these pieces for myself, not even considering it as a business idea. But as I wore my creations at Burning Man , the response was overwhelming. People loved my designs and wanted to buy them. This initial interest ignited a spark in me, and I began to gain more skills, experimenting and refining my style.

Little by little, what started as a personal passion evolved into something much bigger. In 2019, I founded Zenma , a luxury fashion house dedicated to empowering women through bold, unique, and handmade designs. I am incredibly proud of how far Zenma has come and the journey it represents. Each piece tells a story, celebrating individuality and the spirit of selfexpression that first captivated me at Burning Man .

I focus on bold colors, intricate details, and unconventional styles that make a statement. My designs are not just about following trends but about setting them. By pushing the boundaries of fashion, I create pieces that stand out and empower the wearer to embrace their individuality.

Each piece is meticulously handmade, ensuring that no two items are exactly alike. This attention to detail and craftsmanship underscores the uniqueness of each design, making the wearer feel special and distinctive.

I offer custom-made designs and fittings, both in-person and through online consultations. This personalized approach ensures that each piece aligns perfectly with the wearer’s style, body, and personality, making them feel confident and celebrated.

“ I am incredibly proud of how far Zenma has come and the journey it represents. ”

Your designs aim to empower and celebrate uniqueness. How do you integrate this soul mission into each piece you create?

Every design begins with a story or a personal inspiration. I draw from my experiences, emotions, and the vibrant energy of festivals like Burning Man. Each piece is a canvas for self-expression, crafted to tell a unique story that resonates with the wearer.

Empowerment also comes from comfort and confidence in wearing the clothing. I use high-quality materials and pay close attention to fit and comfort, ensuring that my designs are not only visually stunning but also comfortable to wear.

By embedding these elements into each creation, I ensure that Zenma ’s designs empower women to feel bold, beautiful, and uniquely themselves, celebrating their individuality with every piece they wear.

What personal experiences have influenced your approach to fashion and design?

My approach to fashion and design is deeply influenced by a variety of personal experiences that have shaped my creativity and vision.

Attending Burning Man for the first time was a transformative experience. The explosion of creativity, the freedom of self-expression, and the eclectic styles I encountered there left a profound impression on me. It was at Burning Man that I realized the power of fashion as a medium to express individuality and tell unique stories. This experience inspired me to create

bold, artful pieces that stand out and make a statement.

Since I started my personal journey in becoming an adult in this world, I was always searching for something meaningful to do. Discovering clothing and festival wear allowed me to break free from norms and create wearable art pieces that made me feel alive. This journey empowered me to express myself fully and confidently. When I was young, I struggled with dressing and finding a style that resonated with me. It might sound funny, but I really didn’t know how to dress. From a young girl who couldn’t find a style she appreciated, I evolved into someone who created her own clothing line because I couldn’t find anything like Zenma online.

How does your personal style reflect the values and mission of Zenma?

My personal style is a direct reflection of the values and mission of Zenma , embodying the essence of boldness, uniqueness, and empowerment.

I believe in making a statement through fashion. My personal style is characterized by vibrant colors, daring designs, and intricate details that capture attention and exude confidence. This bold approach to fashion is at the heart of Zenma , where every piece is designed to stand out and empower the wearer to embrace their individuality.

Fashion is a powerful tool for self-expression and empowerment. My personal journey of finding confidence and self-expression through clothing is mirrored in Zenma ’s mission. I design pieces that make women feel bold, beautiful, and unapologetically themselves, just as I have learned to embrace my own individuality through my style.

My style is a celebration of breaking free from societal norms and embracing who you truly are. This rebellious spirit is infused into Zenma ’s collections, encouraging women to step outside their comfort zones and express themselves fully and confidently.

What does "empowering through design" mean to you, and how do you ensure each piece embodies this philosophy?

To me, “empowering through design” means creating clothing that not only looks beautiful but also instills confidence, celebrates individuality, and inspires self-expression. It’s about crafting pieces that make the wearer feel strong, bold, and unapologetically themselves. Each design aims to boost the wearer’s confidence. By using bold colors, striking patterns, and innovative silhouettes, I create pieces that stand out and make the wearer feel powerful. The intention is for every woman who wears Zenma to feel like she can conquer the world.

I design with the goal of enabling personal expression. Each piece is unique and tells a story, allowing the wearer to showcase her personality and individuality. Whether it’s through intricate details, custom fittings, or bespoke designs, I ensure that every item resonates personally with the wearer.

What does the process of crafting a Zenma masterpiece look like, from initial inspiration to final product?

Creating a Zenma masterpiece involves drawing inspiration from diverse sources, refining ideas through research and sketches, selecting high-quality fabrics, drafting precise patterns, meticulous sewing and construction, fitting and adjusting for perfect comfort, adding finishing touches, conducting thorough quality checks, and finally, presenting the piece to ensure an empowering and personalized fashion experience for each customer.

Zenma is known for its bold, statement pieces. How do you balance creativity and practicality in your designs?

Balancing creativity and practicality in my designs is essential to Zenma’s success. I achieve this by integrating innovative and bold elements with functional aspects. Each piece is meticulously crafted to ensure it not only makes

“I design pieces that make women feel bold, beautiful, and unapologetically themselves. ”

a statement but also provides comfort and versatility. I select high-quality, durable fabrics and incorporate adjustable features for a perfect fit. Practicality is woven into the design process, ensuring that even the most daring creations are wearable and comfortable, allowing women to express themselves confidently in any setting. What defines “wearable art” for you, and how do you ensure each garment meets this standard of luxury?

Wearable art for me is defined by unique, artistically inspired designs crafted with highquality materials and intricate details, ensuring each garment is both visually stunning and practical, meeting the highest standards of luxury. I select only the finest materials, ensuring durability, comfort, and a luxurious feel. This commitment to quality is essential for creating garments that not only look exquisite but also last.

Since its inception in 2019, how has Zenma evolved? What have been some key milestones in the brand’s journey?

Zenma has evolved significantly, expanding from a personal passion project to a renowned luxury fashion house. Key milestones include the initial overwhelming demand at Burning Man , the launch of our online store, the introduction of custom-made designs, and showcasing collections at major fashion events like NYFW 2024 , FLLFW 2024 , EPN fashion week NY 2024 , Miami Swim Week 2023 , ART Basel Miami 2020 . These milestones have marked our growth in creativity, reach, and impact, continually pushing the boundaries of bold, unique fashion.

How does Zenma approach sustainability and ethical practices in the luxury fashion industry?

We priorite high-quality, durable materials, ensuring responsible sourcing, and producing limited-edition collections to reduce waste. We focus on handmade craftsmanship, which minimizes environmental impact and supports

fair labor practices. Additionally, Zenma embraces a made-to-order model to avoid overproduction and offers custom designs to ensure each piece is cherished and valued, aligning with our commitment to sustainability and ethical fashion.

How do cultural trends and movements influence your designs and the way you approach fashion?

Cultural trends and movements deeply influence my designs by providing a rich tapestry of inspiration. I draw from various cultural elements, blending traditional and contemporary styles to create unique, bold pieces. Festivals, art, and global street fashion particularly impact my work, pushing me to innovate and experiment. This fusion of cultural influences ensures that Zenma’s collections are not only visually striking but also resonate with a wide audience, making each piece both relevant and timeless.

What are some of your favorite pieces from your collections, and why are they special to you?

I think my favorite piece in the whole Zenma history is the unicorn princess design. That’s where it actually all began. From that design, which I couldn’t find anywhere on the internet, I decided to create Zenma . You know how when we look for unicorn costumes, we always envision funny costumes for kids. That got me thinking— why isn’t there a beautiful, elegant unicorn princess costume, almost like a princess sitting on a unicorn and flying on it? This idea became my first inspiration because I really loved unicorns when I was young. This piece is one of a kind and remains one of our most expensive pieces, embodying the essence of creativity and the start of my journey with Zenma .

How do you balance staying true to Zenma's core values while keeping up with the everchanging fashion industry?

Balancing Zenma ’s core values with the everchanging fashion industry involves staying true to our commitment to bold, unique designs

“Zenma has evolved significantly, expanding from a personal passion project to a renowned luxury fashion house.”

while remaining adaptable and innovative. I focus on timeless, high-quality craftsmanship and sustainable practices, ensuring each piece aligns with our mission. At the same time, I keep an eye on current trends and cultural shifts, integrating relevant elements in a way that enhances our brand’s distinctive style. This balance allows Zenma to evolve and stay relevant without compromising our core values of creativity, empowerment, and individuality.

What advice would you give to aspiring fashion designers who want to create meaningful and empowering designs like those of Zenma?

My advice to aspiring fashion designers is to believe in yourself and trust your vision. Don’t listen to naysayers, and don’t be afraid to start something new. Remember, where there is one step, there is another, and before you know it, you’re already halfway there. It’s all about passion and how much you’re willing to try. Stay

true to your creative instincts, be persistent, and let your passion drive you forward. Empowering and meaningful designs come from a place of authenticity and dedication.

What are your aspirations for Zenma in the next five years? Are there any exciting projects or collaborations on the horizon?

In the next five years, I aspire to expand Zenma into a globally recognized brand known for its bold, unique designs and commitment to sustainability. I aim to introduce new collections that push the boundaries of fashion while staying true to our core values. Exciting projects include potential collaborations with other innovative designers and artists, as well as expanding our presence at major fashion events worldwide. Additionally, I plan to enhance our custom design services and explore new ways to integrate technology into our creations, making each piece even more personalized and empowering for our customers.

TECH in FASHION

THE RISE OF WEARABLE TECHNOLOGY

In an era where technology permeates every aspect of our lives, fashion is no exception. The marriage of technology and fashion has given rise to a new frontier—wearable technology. From smart fabrics to 3D-printed garments, innovations are reshaping the future of fashion, making it more functional, customizable, and interactive than ever before.

THE EVOLUTION OF SMART FABRICS

At the core of this transformation is the development of smart fabrics, materials that integrate electronic components to provide enhanced capabilities. These fabrics go beyond aesthetics, offering functionality that was once the stuff of science fiction. Imagine a jacket that changes color based on your mood, or a dress that charges your phone while you wear it. These concepts are no longer futuristic fantasies but emerging realities.

One notable example is the work of Google’s Project Jacquard, which integrates touchsensitive threads into textiles, allowing wearers to interact with their clothing in new ways. By simply swiping a sleeve, users can control their smartphones, play music, or receive notifications. This seamless integration of technology into everyday wear is a testament to the potential of smart fabrics to revolutionize how we experience fashion.

3D PRINTING: CUSTOMIZATION AT YOUR FINGERTIPS

3D printing is another groundbreaking innovation that's redefining the fashion landscape. The technology allows designers to create intricate, one-of-a-kind pieces with unprecedented precision and minimal waste. This level of customization was previously unimaginable in traditional manufacturing processes.

High-profile designers like Iris van Herpen have embraced 3D printing, creating avant-garde pieces that push the boundaries of fashion. Her creations, which often resemble wearable sculptures, demonstrate the limitless possibilities of this technology. Beyond high fashion, 3D printing also offers practical applications, such as producing custom-fit shoes or accessories tailored to an individual’s exact measurements.

The environmental benefits of 3D printing are significant as well. By using only the necessary materials and reducing excess waste, this technology aligns with the growing demand for sustainability in fashion. As consumers become more conscious of their environmental impact, 3D printing could play a pivotal role in the industry’s shift toward more eco-friendly practices. revolutionizing the way consumers shop for fashion, bridging the gap between online and offline experiences. AR technology enables shoppers to virtually try on clothing and accessories from the comfort of their homes, eliminating the guesswork associated with sizing and fit. Likewise, virtual fitting rooms leverage 3D imaging and body scanning technology to create hyper-realistic simulations, allowing customers to visualize how garments will look and feel before making a purchase. These cutting-edge tools not only enhance the shopping experience but also reduce returns and minimize environmental impact, marking a paradigm shift in the way we consume fashion.

WEARABLE GADGETS: FASHION MEETS FUNCTIONALITY

Wearable gadgets are perhaps the most recognizable manifestation of technology in fashion. From smartwatches to fitness trackers, these devices have become staples in our daily lives, blending functionality with style. The appeal of wearable tech lies in its ability to enhance our lives while serving as a fashion statement.

The Apple Watch , for example, has evolved from a simple smartwatch to a fashion accessory, with customizable bands and faces that cater to individual tastes. Collaborations with luxury brands like Hermès have further elevated its status, proving that technology and fashion can coexist harmoniously.

Another exciting development in wearable tech is the emergence of smart jewelry. Brands like Oura and Bellabeat offer rings and bracelets that not only look elegant but also track health metrics such as sleep, activity levels, and even stress. These discreet devices cater to those who seek the benefits of technology without sacrificing style.

THE FUTURE OF FASHION IS HERE

As wearable technology continues to evolve, its impact on fashion is undeniable. The integration of smart fabrics, 3D printing, and wearable gadgets is not just a trend—it’s the future of the industry. These innovations are transforming how we interact with our clothing, making fashion more personal, functional, and sustainable.

For fashion enthusiasts, this convergence of technology and style opens up a world of possibilities. The future wardrobe might include garments that adapt to our needs, accessories that monitor our health, and shoes that are printed to fit our feet perfectly. The rise of wearable technology marks a new chapter in fashion, where innovation meets creativity, and the only limit is our imagination.

As we look forward to what’s next, one thing is clear: the future of fashion is not just about what we wear, but how we wear it—and technology is leading the way.

OPIFICIO MODENESE

A RICH HERITAGE

In the dynamic and fast-paced world of fashion, few brands manage to seamlessly blend tradition, innovation, and sustainability as eloquently as Opificio Modenese . Founded by Gloria Trevisani in 2016, this Italian fashion house has rapidly carved out a niche for itself, embodying a vision that prioritizes quality craftsmanship, timeless elegance, and environmental responsibility. With a rich heritage dating back to its origins as a service company for luxury brands in 1989, Opificio Modenese leverages decades of industry experience to create garments that not only enhance a woman’s beauty and confidence but also stand the test of time. Trevisani 's passion for impeccable tailoring and her commitment to sustainable practices are evident in every piece, making Opificio Modenese a beacon of modern, conscious fashion.

Can you tell us more about the inspiration and vision behind the founding of Opificio Modenese?

Opificio Modenese was born in 2016 from my desire to dress women, making them feel beautiful and confident. The experience and professionalism of our history guarantee the creation of high-quality tailored and handcrafted garments, Gloria Trevisani , founder of Opificio Modenese told QP

Indeed, the company was founded in 1989 as a service company for luxury brands. Every bit of knowledge acquired, Gloria wanted to apply to the garments of Opificio Modenese , whose quality lies in the meticulous research of pattern constructions capable of adapting to all body types and in their manufacture, designed to last over time.

Starting in 2018, Opificio Modenese began to explore a new sustainable reality by creating the first garments in Sensitive fabric. This material is produced in Italy through a lowimpact and sustainable process and possesses incredible technical characteristics that make it unique: extremely easy to care for, it does not need to be ironed, and it is easily washable at home at low temperatures. Breathable and elastic, it provides comfort to those who wear the garments.

brands?

Opificio Modenese is a 100% Made in Italy clothing brand that firmly believes in the value of our territory, a land of artisans and craftsmanship. Starting from the idea of creating a zerokilometer supply chain, we are able to produce our products entirely within a short radius, allowing the brand to directly control its production chain and working methods, as well as ensuring a reduced environmental impact.

Opificio Modenese accompanies women throughout their day, from the office to leisure time, guaranteeing high comfort thanks to the innovative and sustainable materials used in the garments. The brand aims to cater to different body shapes and silhouettes, offering essential pieces that can form a capsule wardrobe enriched with playful colors and prints, as well as more unique and original designs. This brand is designed to make every woman feel confident and comfortable on any occasion, beyond seasonal trends.

“We believe in the value of our territory, a land of artisans and craftmanship”

How did your over twenty years of experience in the fashion industry influence the creation of Opificio Modenese?

The company was founded as a service company for luxury brands in 1989 and has since developed a portfolio of diverse clients with extremely varied needs. This has allowed the company to build a wealth of knowledge that is applied to the design of Opificio Modenese garments. From a modeling perspective, the focus is on finding optimal solutions to suit different body types, ensuring comfortable yet unique and refined fits. From a manufacturing perspective, the focus is on studying the optimal solutions and finishes for each type of garment and fabric used in the collection. What are the core values that define Opificio Modenese and set it apart from other fashion

Could you elaborate on the significance of being 100% Made in Italy for your brand?

Our brand is conceived through our distinctive cultural markers, which is why we ensure that every component (fabrics, accessories, craftsmanship) of the collection is sourced from Italy, and whenever possible, from our own territory. Being 100% Made in Italy means maintaining excellent artisanal quality, highlighting cultural heritage and local traditions. This commitment not only ensures that each piece reflects our cultural legacy, but also supports the local economy and small artisanal businesses.

How does Opificio Modenese ensure the high quality and durability of its garments?

When we research materials, we consider the durability they will have after garment maintenance. We are very meticulous in choosing accessories, ensuring they never compromise the garment's performance. With our in-house tailoring, we conduct numerous tests on stitching and construction methods during the prototyping phase. This allows us to identify potential weaknesses and ensure that each garment is made to the highest standards of quality and durability.

What makes the Sensitive fabric used in the ESSENTIALS line unique and sustainable?

The Sensitive fabric, which we used for the Essentials capsule and has now become a core part of all our collections, is a special material produced by an Italian company committed to sustainable practices. Specifically, it focuses on process sustainability, ensuring low impact in terms of water waste, CO2 emissions, and chemical waste. Its products are OEKOTEX , PEF , and GRS certified. Additionally, it emphasizes environmental sustainability by participating in numerous initiatives with FAI , WWF , and the World Land Trust , and embraces economic and social sustainability, focusing on the health of its employees and the entire supply chain.

The technical characteristics of the fabric also contribute to reducing the environmental impact of the garments. It is washable at low temperatures, can air-dry without the use of dryers, and does not need ironing. Extremely easy to care for, it reduces emissions associated with its maintenance and, due to its delicate processing, has a very long life cycle.

How does Opificio Modenese address the challenge of reducing the fashion industry's environmental impact?

At Opificio Modenese , we adopt an ecodesign approach and primarily use sustainable materials. During the design phase, we reduce the use of unnecessary accessories that would make garments harder to dispose of. We also minimize physical prototypes by favoring virtual prototyping systems with the use of 3D technologies.

Our communication efforts also educate customers on the importance of maintenance and repairs to extend the lifespan of their garments. This approach not only emphasizes sustainability in our production processes but also encourages responsible consumer behavior, contributing to a more sustainable fashion industry overall.

Could you share more about the specific social projects Opificio Modenese is involved in?

For years now, we have been supporting several social associations:

Amazzonia Sviluppo , formerly Amazzonia90 , operates in Italy and internationally to support the most disadvantaged populations. The association's activities intervene on various fronts, both in Italy and in the Amazon , through numerous projects:

• An agricultural school in Manaus supports children's education.

• The Rio della Speranza project, through microcredit, aims to improve living conditions for young people in villages.

• Emporio sociale Portobello alleviates the vulnerability of families in Modena who have lost their jobs by offering significant purchase discounts at a special supermarket.

• Ca’ Nostra is an innovative cohabitation model for elderly individuals with cognitive disorders, managed directly by families with community support.

• WelcHome is a project for the decentralized family-based accommodation of refugees and asylum seekers, managed by the municipality and civil society.

• Velomodena 2.0 targets unemployed youth, offering training courses and consultations to help them enter the job market.

La Caramella Buona defends abused children and promotes the creation of "good homes," emergency spaces to accommodate women and minors fleeing violence.

Every year, we support a fashion show featuring "ordinary" women who are not professional models and who are going through or have gone through a journey of healing from breast cancer.

Each year, our employees receive a medical check-up including an ultrasound to prevent breast cancer.

Finally, in our company, we aim to meet the needs of employees requiring family care or other support by supporting part-time requests and promoting flexible hours.

How do you incorporate local crafts

“Our communication efforts also educate customers on the importance of maintenance and repairs to extend the lifespan of their garments.”

and traditional craftsmanship into your collections?

While using innovative fabrics like Sensitive® , we integrate traditional craftsmanship from our artisanal culture and support small local workshops. This combination of innovation and tradition forms the core of our production approach. On one hand, utilizing advanced fabrics such as Sensitive® allows us to offer garments that meet modern needs for comfort, ease of maintenance, and sustainability. On the other hand, traditional artisan techniques add a unique value to our products, ensuring quality and authenticity.

Collaborating with small local workshops not only supports our local economy but also preserves traditional artisan skills from being lost. Every stage of production, from material selection to final creation, is characterized by meticulous care and attention to detail that only craftsmanship can provide. This approach enables us to create garments that are not only modern and functional but also imbued with history and culture.

What role do eccentric and original colors and prints play in your contemporary designs?

Opificio Modenese aims to present a woman who plays with and feels comfortable in colors, complementing our palette with prints designed by our in-house team. We believe that fashion should be an expression of personality and joy, and colors play a fundamental role in this belief. Our color palettes are designed to offer a wide range of options, from subtle and sophisticated tones to vibrant and bold colors. This allows women to experiment and have fun with their wardrobe, creating looks that reflect their mood and individuality.

The prints, created by our in-house team, are another distinctive element of our collections. Each print results from careful research and a creative process that considers the latest trends, as well as Italian artistic and cultural traditions. Our prints are intended to add a touch of liveliness to the garments, making them recognizable and special.

How has the feedback from Italian retailers influenced the growth and development of Opificio Modenese?

In Italy, we may lag behind many other regions of the world in terms of sustainability, but this hasn't discouraged us. On the contrary, it has motivated us to be even more attentive to these issues, aiming to educate our retailers and customers about the importance of sustainable fashion and ecological practices.

The delay compared to other regions can be attributed to various factors, including less public awareness and an industrial tradition that has been less focused on sustainability. However, this challenge has strengthened our commitment to promoting positive change. We have seen this situation as an opportunity to become pioneers in our industry and to differentiate ourselves as a brand that not only talks about sustainability but actively practices it in all stages of production.

In what ways does Opificio Modenese cater to the needs and desires of modern women?

We design easy-to-wear garments, focusing predominantly on outfits that do not require complicated pairings. This approach stems from our deep understanding of the daily needs of modern women. We recognize that contemporary life is hectic, and women seek practical solutions that do not compromise on style or comfort.

Our design philosophy is centered around functionality without sacrificing elegance. Each piece is crafted to be versatile, allowing women to effortlessly transition their look whether it's for a formal meeting, a day at the office, or a relaxing moment. The color palette and lines of our garments are curated to be complementary, enabling women to create harmonious outfits with ease. Additionally, we invest time and resources in researching cuts and fits that flatter diverse body types, emphasizing femininity in a natural and comfortable manner.

Comfort is indeed another cornerstone of our design approach. We use high-quality materials that offer a pleasant touch and allow freedom of movement without restrictions.

What are some of the key elements that make your garments elegant and suitable for any occasion?

We strive for a clean and essential design, while meticulously caring for details, because we believe that beauty lies in simplicity and timeless elegance. Our garments are designed with

“We believe that fashion should be an expression of personality and joy, and colors play a fundamental role in this belief. ”

lines and shapes that express refinement and sobriety, offering a sophisticated look suitable for various occasions.

Our pieces are conceived to easily adapt to different circumstances. They can be worn alone for an elegant and understated look, or accessorized to add a touch of personality or adapt to a more formal occasion. This flexibility allows women to feel confident and comfortable in every situation, without compromising their personal style.

The Sensitive® fabric plays a key role in our collection, providing not only exceptional comfort but also practicality. This innovative material allows our garments to be easily shortened or modified, accommodating individual preferences and specific needs of our customers. This versatility adds significant value to our products, making them more suitable for a modern and dynamic audience. How do you balance staying true to traditional craftsmanship while incorporating modern design elements?

While maintaining traditional artisan techniques, we integrate elements of modern design to meet the needs of contemporary women. This balance allows us to create garments that are both innovative and respectful of our cultural heritage.

What measures do you take to ensure ethical practices in your production process?

We oversee the supply chain at every stage and have recently implemented a blockchain project through ICE, allowing end consumers to view the production stages of the purchased garment. Additionally, we have initiated an ESG process focusing on ethical principles that guide both us and our supply chain. We have drafted a shared declaration of intent signed by all our suppliers.

How do you see the future of sustainable fashion evolving, and what role do you envision for Opificio Modenese in this landscape?

Sustainability is a fundamental value for our brand and represents a process of awareness that is gaining increasing importance among global consumers. This shift in mindset is not

just a passing trend but a profound cultural transformation that influences purchasing decisions and consumer behavior.

As a brand, we are committed to leading this change by educating and raising awareness among our customers about the importance of sustainable fashion. We will continue to seek innovative and sustainable materials for our collections, carefully selecting each component to ensure a reduced environmental impact. The use of Sensitive® fabric is a tangible example of how we integrate sustainability into our production process, thanks to its low environmental footprint and long-lasting characteristics.

Moreover, we believe it is essential to communicate to our customers practices that extend the life of their garments. We promote the importance of proper maintenance and repairs to prolong the lifespan of purchased items, thereby extending product lifecycle and minimizing overall environmental impact.

Can you give us a sneak peek into any upcoming collections or projects that Opificio Modenese is working on?

We will soon be presenting our new SS25 collection in New York and Atlanta for the U.S. market, and in Paris for the European market. Looking ahead, we are exploring and implementing strategies to integrate the circular economy into our production process. This approach aims to reduce waste and maximize the use of available resources. One of our main focuses is on managing the end-of-life of our garments.

Additionally, we are dedicating significant resources to maximizing the use of leftover fabrics. Despite their limited quantity, through our careful inventory management, we believe every small action contributes to more sustainable production. These fabrics are integrated into new designs or used for creating accessories and details that further enrich our collection. This not only reduces waste but also demonstrates our commitment to valuing every available resource and minimizing the overall environmental impact of our production.

“While maintaining traditional artisan techniques, we integrate elements of modern design to meet the needs of contemporary women. ”
