Members of at least six distinct groups are now recognized, including notosuchids, sphagesaurids, candidodontids, peirosaurids, trematochampsids, and baurusuchids. These mostly terrestrial crocodyliforms potentially developed ecological strategies that allowed them to live in a hot and arid climate during the Cretaceous. A new genus and species of Baurusuchidae, Campinasuchus dinizi gen. et sp. nov., is established on the basis of several partial skulls and skeletons from the Turonian-Santonian Adamantina Formation. This taxon is notable for its relatively short, anteriorly tapering snout, marked maxillary heterodonty with third maxillary and fourth dentary teeth extremely enlarged relative to other teeth, and the presence of a large anteroposterior depression on each palatine between the palatal fenestrae. The presence of...

We revised 2218 autopsies performed at the School Hospital from Federal Unversity of Triangulo Mineiro, 1970-2003. Data referring to age, gender and color of patients were reported and NCC was microscopically and macroscopically analyzed. We found 53 (2.4%) NCC cases. The mean age was 50 years old, 34 (64.1%) individuals were male and 36 (67.9%) white. Macroscopically, 17 cysticerci were analyzed. The most frequent location was meningocortical in 12 (70.6%) cases. Microscopically, the cysticerci presented an ovoid shape, containing the larvae preserved in 4 (23.5%) cases or in destruction degrees in 13 (76.5%) cases. Therefore, in NCC was found several general pathologic processes (necrosis, interstitial deposits, fibrosis, gliosis, inflammation) amongst which are highlighted beta-fibrillose in 13 (76.5%) cases associated to inflammatory process in 16 (94.1%) cases caused by...

All the specimens come from the Bauru Group (Bauru Basin) from the Adamantina (Campanian), Uberaba (Campanian) and MarÃlia (Maastrichtian) formations. Vertebrate-bearing sites are distributed throughout the Triângulo Mineiro, but the Uberaba County has the largest diversity of Late Cretaceous vertebrate from the Bauru Group, mainly concentrated in the Serra da Galga Member of the MarÃlia Formation. So far, the following taxa have been recognized in the Triângulo Mineiro, from the Adamantina Formation: Amiiformes indet., cf. Atractosteus sp. (Lepisosteiformes), Mesoeucrocodylia indet., Sphagesaurus sp. (Sphagesauridae), Campinasuchus dinizi and Pissarrachampsa sera (Baurusuchidae), Maxakalisaurus topai (Titanosauria), Titanosauria indet., and Abelisauridae indet.; from the Uberaba Formation: Titanosauria indet. and Megaraptora indet.; from...

This study aimed to evaluate the morphological and inflammatory changes in the skin due to acute stress and chronic stress, associated with perinatal asphyxia, ascending infection and congenital malformation. We measured dermal and epidermal thickness, the diameter of keratinocytes, and the percentage of collagen and elastic fibers. Immunohistochemistry was used to evaluate both Langerhans cell and mast cell density, and corticotropin-releasing hormone expression in the epidermis, sebaceous gland, sebaceous duct, sudoriparous gland and in the hair follicle. The epidermis was thinner in the cases with perinatal asphyxia, ascending infection and chronic stress. The diameter of keratinocytes was smaller in ascending infection and chronic stress. Mast cell density showed an indirect correlation with gestational age. Corticotropin-releasing hormone expression was significantly higher in ascending infection and chronic stress. Chronic stress is associated with immunological and morphological changes in the skin of fetuses with perinatal asphyxia and ascending infection. Thus, corticotropin-releasing hormone seems to play a vital role in the differentiation and activation of innate and adaptive immune cells of the skin of fetuses.

I. Price Paleontological Research Center and the Dinosaur Museum, in the areas of research, education, protection of the geological heritage and popularization of the science of fossils. Several taxa come from their various sites, unique in the paleontological record, including the dinosaurs. With outstanding relevance, its exceptionally well preserved fossils occur in remarkable quantity and diversity, making it possible to refer to the region as Brazil`s Land of the Dinosaurs. From 2010, the Price Center and the Dinosaur Museum became part of the Federal University of the Triângulo Mineiro - UFTM, which, in partnership with the Geological Survey of Brazil (CPRM), through the Geopark Project, initiated the building up of the Geopark Uberaba – Brazil`s Land of the Dinosaurs. The Geopark`s area involves the whole county of Uberaba, totaling 4,540.51km², and so ...

The animals (n=48) were divided into four groups: sedentary (CONTROL group); hypertensive after administration of NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester for 7 days (L-NAME Group); trained for 8 weeks through swimming exercises (TRAINED Group);trained and treated with L-NAME during the last week (L-NAME TRAINED Group). All the animals were submitted to the experiment procedures for blood pressure (BP) readings and cardiac morphometric evaluation. In comparison to the other groups, the L-NAME and L-NAME TRAINED groups were hypertensive (p<0.05); however, BP elevation in the L-NAME TRAINED group was significantly lower than the L-NAME group (p<0.05). The heart weight indexes for the TRAINED and L-NAME TRAINED groups were higher than the CONTROL and L-NAME groups (p<0.05). Also they had presented higher rates of macroscopic ca...

Nine patients presented parasites in the adrenal veins, with a total of 24 nests, and only one nest was found in the inferior vena cava. The area of muscular tissue examined was of 2944.3 mm2 for the adrenal veins and of 47808.6 mm2 for the vena cava, giving a relation of 0.815 nests/100 mm2 for the adrenal vein and of 0.002 for the vena cava. Thus the smooth muscle of the adrenal vein was 407 times more parasited than the muscular wall of the inferior vena cava. This higher parasitism of the adrenal vein by trypanosoma cruzi in chronic Chagas' disease may be determined by its greater corticosteroid concentration, which can reduce the anti-trypanosomal defenses.

In addition, low birth weight has been reported to be associated with impaired insulin secretion, insulin resistance and diminished area of pancreatic islets. Because the transcription factor pancreatic and duodenal homeobox 1 (PDX-1) is important for the maintenance of B-cell physiology, PDX-1 expression and islet area were assessed in neonatal rats of dams fed low (6%) or normal (17%) protein diets during pregnancy. PDX-1 protein and mRNA levels, as well as insulin secretion and islet area, were measured after 28 d of life in normal, low protein and recovered rats whose dams consumed a normal protein diet after delivery. Insulin secretion by isolated islets in response to 2.8 and 16.7 mmol glucose/L was reduced in 28-d-old low protein rats compared with the control (P < 0.05). At birth and after 28 d of life, the islet area and PDX-1 protein exp...

According to Chagas' disease tests, patients were divided into chagasic (n = 362) and controls (n = 285). Diabetes mellitus was defined on the basis of two fasting blood glucose levels > or = 140 mg/dl and hyperglycemia as fasting blood glucose > 110 mg/dl. Chagasic patients were divided into groups with the cardiac form of the disease (n = 179), with megas (n = 58), and asymptomatic (n = 125). Groups were compared by the chi 2 test, analysis of variance, Student's "t" test, and Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests. A significant difference was assumed when p < 0.05. Chagasic and control groups were matched for age, white color and body mass index. Diabetes mellitus was more prevalent in patients with the cardiac form of Chagas' disease than in controls, or patients with the megas or the asymptomatic form (15....

There were no pancreatic morphometric differences between necropsied chagasic and control groups. However, there was a smaller intrapancreatic neuronal population and a higher frequency of leukocyte perineural infiltrate in the pancreas of chagasic women. This possible intrapancreatic denervation could be associated with changes in carbohydrate metabolism, including hyperglycemia and diabetes mellitus, in some chronic chagasic women.
