The lack of effective governance and the absence of a functioning state in Somalia have contributed to the growth of piracy in the region. This study aims to examine the relationship between maritime piracy and national security in Somalia and to explore the contextual factors that contribute to the perpetuation of piracy in the region. This study adopted a qualitative research design and employed a contextual analysis approach to explore an in-depth understanding of the history and impact of piracy in Somalia, and the policies and strategies implemented to combat piracy. The findings of the study reveal that maritime piracy has had a significant impact on national security in Somalia and that the issue is complex and multifaceted. In terms of the factors driving piracy, research has identified a range of causes including poverty, political instability, and the absence of effec...

These legal frameworks include the civil law that was passed down from the British during and after colonization, pre-colonial customary laws and cultural practices, and religious laws (Christian and Islamic laws). Different kinds of norms and laws have subjected Nigerian women to violations of their rights depending on the woman’s cultural or religious affiliation. Such cultural and/or religious practices are usually in opposition to civil law and the Nigerian constitution, which is a custodian of these rights. Moreover, despite the supremacy of the constitution and expected compliance with international human rights treaties that Nigeria has ratified, the fact is that today there are impediments to the effective protection of women’s rights in Nigeria. For instance, although the Nigerian constitution outlaw’s discrimination on the grounds of ...

South Africa’s intervention, like many other countries, adopted the necessary measures that would prevent the spread of the virus among its population, particularly educational institutions. One such measure was the decision to shut down institutions in South Africa and the contingent measure to operationalise teaching and learning using cyberspace. The unprecedented move to online teaching engendered levels of anxiety and fear, and presented a highly disruptive and traumatic experience for many students, especially those from impoverished and rural backgrounds. While focusing on student psychosocial vulnerabilities during this pandemic, the article also presents background factors such as social and economic factors that constrain student success in So...

Ethnomedicinal plants have historically embodiment of wisdom from the ancestors and play a significant role in treating various human disorders. This study embodies qualitative research methods as well as the Social Constructivist Theory to understand how the rural communities (Impendle, Bulwer and Kokstad), located within the geographical landscape of South Africa use ethnomedicinal plants to cure flu and other associated symptoms in the advent of COVID-19. Through telephonic interviews, twenty (20) research participants were recruited using the snowballing-chain referral sampling technique. Research participants contributed by noting that rural communities/cultures have a rich knowledge of ethnomedicinal plants that they have used for decades to treat flu symptoms and even cure people suffering from flu. This paper strongly recognises that people’s voices in rural communities are important in...

Over the past few years, there is increasing interest on the impacts of climate change on conflict, peace and security in Africa. This paper explores the extent to which climate change impacts and attendant effects on environmental resources are drivers of some of the conflicts in the Lake Chad region, specifically in Chad, Cameroon, Niger and Nigeria. It applies the human security theory to establish the interface between climate impacts, human insecurity and local conflicts. We find that reduced access to natural resources such as fertile land, water and pasture is undermining livelihoods of vulnerable people and communities in the Lake Chad region, which triggered recurrent conflicts.
