ABSTRACT Sports and physical activities (SPA) do not spontaneously offer the view of particularly... more ABSTRACT Sports and physical activities (SPA) do not spontaneously offer the view of particularly discriminatory spheres. It is however worth reflecting on the discrimination issue and how people living with disabilities take part in SPA and certain recreational and entertainment activities. The issue is examined through an analysis of the regulations, which were established during the 1990s “dwarf tossing competitions” controversy. Then, the analysis focuses on the sports practice settings intended for people with disabilities which have gradually been put in place during the 20th century: the “Silent International Games” for the deaf and hard-of-hearing since 1924, and since the 1960s the “Paralympic Games” and the “Special Olympics Games” intended for “mentally challenged athletes”. These Olympics continue to be the poor relations to the sports movements in terms of budget, of coaching and administration, and of media coverage. The concept of “ableism” used in the Anglo-Saxon analyses indicates a bias in the programs that are precisely supposed to integrate people living with disabilities. The relevance of the concept allows sociological analyses to take account, beyond physical pain, of the suffering of ostracized people who continue individually and collectively to face barriers, injustice and humiliation in their sporting life.
