The specialist literature, however, has often simplified the constructive conception and evolution of these artifacts that, even when they stand still to date, show the signs of a long life, often hidden and little-known, even with regard to frequent changes over time. This paper aims to indicate a new methodological approach, based on generative algorithms, to attempt a more in-depth and transversal understanding of the behavior of these wooden structures, focusing on geometric surveying and constructive analysis. The developed method accelerates modeling procedures and it brings on new tools for analyzing these structural systems surveyed through Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) devices.

The specialist literature, however, has often simplified the constructive conception and evolution of these artifacts that, even when they stand still to date, show the signs of a long life, often hidden and little-known, even with regard to frequent changes over time. This paper aims to outline a methodological approach for an in-depth assessment of historic timber roofs, in order to extend their service life. In a holistic conception, digital technologies collaborate to identify mechanical, rheological and hygroscopic phenomena on wood elements over time, highlighting displacements, deformations and, generally, decay. Some case studies analyzed in the territory of Bologna were a useful starting point to achieve a thorough understanding of these artifact...

The combined labelling includes the evaluation of the energy performance, indoor environmental quality and well-being of occupants in dwellings. In this paper, the method of the TripleA-reno combined labelling scheme, the necessary calculations and measurements and the labelling process are introduced. In the TripleA-reno project, the developed combined labelling was successfully applied to different demonstration cases. The main results and experiences of the combined labelling for four demonstration cases located in Hungary, the Netherlands, Spain and Italy are presented.

The behaviour of masonry structures is strongly related to the geometrical properties of macro-elements, their connections, and material characteristics. The collapse of these buildings occurs mainly due to the loss of equilibrium of the macro-elements than the breaking of the materials. Moreover, the numerical computing of structural element stresses requires an in-depth knowledge of material properties that could be reached mainly through destructive tests, which have high costs and could damage the architectural figurativeness of protected buildings. Besides, many tests are required because of the high variability of mechanical properties within an ancient masonry building due to the various transformations and construction techniques that usually characterise its construction history. A quick and non-destructive a...

The behavior of the FEM model is compared with values obtained directly in situ through non-invasive tests based on a sensor capable of detecting the seismic microtremor and provide direct information in terms of oscillation periods and displacements. The case study structure was measured using a seismometer, and, at the same time, modeled using SAP2000. By starting from extremely different initial data, multiple variations were made to the model to produce an increase in frequency, aligning it with the one detected instrumentally.

In particular, the behavior of the wooden trusses that support pitched roofs is analyzed, according to a methodological approach, based on generative algorithms that can help researchers and technicians to improve the comprehension of wooden structures’ behavior during their entire lifespan. While all the previous case studies concerned churches, this latest step extends the survey to the roofing system of the Municipal Theater of Bologna, which has a span of approximately 25 m. The core of the process concerns the automatic transformation of the point cloud into 3D models using parametric modeling tools, such as Grasshopper generative algorithms. Following this workflow, it is possible to speed up the creation of different truss m...

The overall study methodology is focused on the four phases of the People-centered development strategy, which focuses on the core idea that “knowing people” should become an integral part of energy renovation development processes as a means of achieving new categories of products, services, or business strategies. Ethnography is a typical methodology of anthropology. It is based primarily on the end-users observation, during which the researcher is directly involved in the daily activities, interactions, and events of a group of people. Involvement is intended as a means to learn the explicit and hidden aspects of an end-user’s daily life. The primary objective is to understand interactions between building occupants and the building itself, as well as their relationships and roles with...
