The shaft voltage is an unwanted voltage and the possible cause of the shaft voltage and bearing current is due to the existence of common-mode voltage (CMV) contributed by the static-excitation system of the gas turbine generator. In this paper we present an investigation of shaft voltage phenomena through the use of a simulation model of excitation winding shaft-bearing system for a 113.306 MVA gas turbine generator at a power plant in Malaysia. Simulation results obtained shows that shaft voltage is produced at the exciter end and turbine end of the generator due to the static excitation voltage. The shaft voltage magnitude is shown to be reduced when a grounding brush is connected to the shaft.
