Boilers are one of the most used units for both heat generation plants and industry systems. Thei... more Boilers are one of the most used units for both heat generation plants and industry systems. Their operation is subjected to different working loads and maintenance requirements. Exploitation experience points out critical boiler zones where failures and break downs typically occur. This paper analyzes critical zones in hot water fire-tube boiler. Experimental procedure was performed on the model of this type of boilers and its critical element. The tube plate of hot water boiler was identified as the most critical one. Experimental analysis and numerical model verification were performed using Aramis system based on 3-D digital image correlation method. Numerical analysis was done in ANSYS software package and verification of results was done based on measurements obtained by strain gauges and local measurements performed by the Aramis system. Vibrational characteristics of passenger cars are manifested through ride quality defined by the standard ISO 2631, while vibrational characteristics of freight cars are manifested by increased loads on the body construction. Vibrational characteristics of rolling stock are defined by the following railway recommendations and regulations ERRI B153, ERRI B10, UIC 518 and other. The main aim of these regulations is to provide the dynamic stability and comfort in rolling stock running. This paper presents a method to determine the friction generated heat in contact of wheel and rail during normal operation using transient structural-thermal analysis in ANSYS software.

In an attempt to simplify dental procedures, a new group of resin cements, self-adhesive resin cements (SARCs), have been introduced. Performance of SARCs can widely vary. One of the main reasons of adhesion failure is polymerization shrinkage. The aim of this study was to determine, evaluate, and measure strain field of self-adhesive dual cure resin cement during polymerization in self-cure mode using 3D digital image correlation (DIC) method. Methods. The self-adhesive Maxcem Elite (Kerr, Orange, CA, USA) cement was tested in five cylindrical samples (5 mm in diameter and 2 mm in thickness) prepared by filling plastic ring-type molds. Digital images were recorded immediately after sample preparation. Results. Non-uniform strain distribution was found in resin cement with higher strain values along the periphery (up to 15%) and lower strain values in central parts (around 4%) of each sample. Conclusion. The temperature of rubber or rubber-metal springs increases under cyclic loading, due to hysteres... more The temperature of rubber or rubber-metal springs increases under cyclic loading, due to hysteresis losses and low rubber thermal conductivity. Hysteresis losses correspond to energy dissipation from the rubber, which is primarily converted into heat. This well-known phenomenon, called heat build-up, is the primary reason for rubber aging. Increase in temperature within the rubber compound leads to degradation of its physical and chemical properties, increase in stiffness and loss of damping capability. This paper presents a novel procedure of heat generation prediction in rubber or rubber-metal springs. The procedure encompasses the prediction of hysteresis loss, i. e. dissipated energy within the rubber, by finite element analysis and application of a modern visco-plastic rubber constitutive model. This paper presents an innovative method for determining the distribution of the friction generat... more This paper presents an innovative method for determining the distribution of the friction generated heat from the contact of a locomotive wheel and rail, as well as the heat partition factor, during wheel slipping of an accelerating locomotive. The new method combines the finite element analysis simulation and experimental determination of the temperature distribution in a downsized model of a wheel and rail. As a result of a virtual experiment by the finite element analysis, an empirical dependence between the temperature distribution and the heat partition factor was established. The determination of the dependence enabled finding of the exact value of the heat partition factor by the optimization procedure based on matching temperatures obtained by the virtual and real experiment.

The quenching process during the manufacturing results in the residual stresses within the rail wheel that may be dangerous for the rail wheel during its operation. Determination of the residual stress in the rail wheel is important for understanding the damage mechanisms and their influence on the proper work of rail wheels. This paper presents a method for determining the residual stresses in the rail wheel during the quenching process by using the directly coupled thermal-structural analysis in ANSYS software.

The thermal analysis is a very important stage in the study of braking systems, especially of railway vehicles, where it is necessary to brake huge masses, because the thermal load of a braked railway wheel prevails compared to other types of loads. In the braking phase, kinetic energy transforms into thermal energy resulting in intense heating and high temperature states of railway wheels. Thus induced thermal loads determine thermomechanical behavior of the structure of railway wheels. In cases of thermal overloads, which mainly occur as a result of long-term braking on down-grade railroads, the generation of stresses and deformations occurs, whose consequences are the appearance of cracks on the rim of a wheel and the final total wheel defect.
