The study was to assess nutritional status of lactating dairy cattle in Mizoram. Information on f... more The study was to assess nutritional status of lactating dairy cattle in Mizoram. Information on feeding management and feed-stuffs of lactating cows were collected from randomly selected dairy farmers of Bawngkawn, Durtlang and Shiphir areas of Mizoram. Study revealed use of local forest grasses and tree fodders (MGTF) with concentrate mixture (CM) to dairy cows. The average dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP) and total digestible nutrients (TDN) intakes (kg/animal/day) were 13.72±0.27, 1.57±0.03 and 6.88±0.10, indicating inadequate intakes based on body weight, milk yield and milk fat % of dairy cows. The MGTF was found rich in macro and microminerals. The digestibility of nutrients was poor including crude protein (CP) 47.26±0.80 to 52.14±0.58%, ether extract (EE) 43.49±0.93 to 49.33±0.61%, crude fibre (CF) 41.67±1.39 to 47.06±0.58. It was concluded from the study that inadequate DM, CP and TDN intakes and poor digestibility of nutrients might be responsible for poor productivity of dairy cows under rural feeding management in Mizoram.

It was found that the morbidity as well as mortality of young pigs immediately after weaning is high due to weaning stresses, mainly due to diet changes causing them to suffer from severe diarrhoea. For these reasons, providing creep feed along with dairy products during the period of pre-weaning and post-weaning is recommended. The majority of the farmers used skimmed milk powder which is commonly available in the market places, but since it is expensive, it may diminish the return for small-scale farmers. The sows were selected based on parity, sire mated, litter size and weight, and divided into three homogenized groups with 4 sows in each group (T1, T2 and T3). Piglets of T1 group were weaned at 28 days, of T2 at 35 days and of T3 at 42 days of age. The weaned piglets were reared up to 77 th days of age. The animals were reared under intensive system of management following standard feeding and managemental norms. After the end of growing finishing period (14 to 34 weeks) all the pigs were slaughter to study some of the important quantitative and qualitative carcass traits. Pigs under 28 days weaning group weigh significantly (P<0.05) higher carcass weight compared to 35, 42 or 56 days weaning group. Whereas no differences were observed in dressing percentage (%), head weight, weight of alimentary tract with contents including urinary bladder, genitalia, spleen, kidney and pancreas and weight of shank among the carcasses of pigs under different weaning groups. The study was conducted to understand the physical and palpable changes of female genitalia durin... more The study was conducted to understand the physical and palpable changes of female genitalia during the reproductive cycle in 30 apparently healthy, nonpregnant female Manipuri Ponies. The physical and palpable changes of vulva, vagina, cervix, uterus and ovary were recorded during the different days of reproductive cycle. The results showed congestion of vulva on day 0 and day 4 as 100% and 96.66%, respectively. Open cervix were detected in 96.66% on day 0 and 100% on day 4 in oestrus female Manipuri ponies. On the other hand, closed cervix was detected on day 8 to day 18 as 100% during the oestrous cycle. Vaginal discharge was observed on day 0 and day 4 as 16.66% and 40.00%, respectively during the oestrous cycle. 66.66 percent of oestrus Manipuri pony mares showed good uterine tone on day 0 and day 4; whereas atonic uterus was found on day 8 (20%), on day 14 (93.33%) and on day 18 (96.66%) of oestrous cycle. Surveillance of mange mite infestation in 120 dogs in Aizawl, revealed 46.6% infestation, of whic... more Surveillance of mange mite infestation in 120 dogs in Aizawl, revealed 46.6% infestation, of which 64.3% were found positive for sarcoptic mange and 35.7% for demodectic mange. The overall occurrence of mite infestation was higher in winter season. Haematological study showed significant (P<0.05) neutrophilia and leucocytosis in dogs infested with sarcoptic mange, whereas low haemoglobin level and total erythrocytic count along with eosinophilia were evident in dogs infested with demodectic mange.
