Abstract: Two new localities of the fern Haplopteris zosterifolia (Willd.) E. H. Crane (syn. Vitt... more Abstract: Two new localities of the fern Haplopteris zosterifolia (Willd.) E. H. Crane (syn. Vittaria zosterifolia Willd. ) were recently discovered in the Northeast of Reunion island although this species was only known from the Southeast of the island. This species is listed as Endangered on the Red List of the French IUCN Committee, and one of the new localities located along a path is seriously threatened by plant cleanings and by the presence of an invasive alien species Hiptage benghalen sis (L . ) Kurz . The association of H. zosterifolia and Syzygium jambos ( L. ) Alston let think that we deal with a novel ecosystem o r a hybrid ecosystem. In order to protect this new locality and restore the habitat, the Association of the Naturalists of Bourbon draws the attention of the local authorities for a rapid action, and recommends the control of the invasive alien liana Hiptage benghalensis around the station and the replanting of native species in the purpose of increase the biod...

Kurzweil & Manning (2005) proposed two subgenera, subgenus Dryorkis (Thouars) Kurzweil & Manning (2005: 172), comprising the species in the tropics and subtropics of Africa, Madagascar and Asia, and subgenus Disperis with mostly the South African taxa. Disperis currently includes 80 species distributed in sub-Saharan Africa, Madagascar and the adjacent islands of the Indian Ocean (la Croix et al. 2002, Manning & Kurzweil 2005, Govaerts, 2019) and one widespread species in tropical Asia (Kurzweil & Manning 2005). The highest diversity is found in the humid tropics of Africa, the Cape Floristic Region and Madagascar, with little species overlap between these regions (Kuzrweil & Manning, 2005). The inventory of biodiversity in the Comoros archipelago is still in progress. We propose here to... more The inventory of biodiversity in the Comoros archipelago is still in progress. We propose here to contribute to this effort by assessing the diversity of the Hymenophyllaceae family, which forms one of the most diverse and emblematic fern communities in rainforests of the region. Data were extracted from floras, literature, recent collects and observations, and from an exhaustive investigation of the Paris herbarium collection. We also completed an online knowledge database including a computer-aided identification (CAI) tool by using the Xper platform. Our checklist recognizes 21 taxa involving 1 endemic and 7 species newly reported for the archipelago. The taxonomy and discrimination of each taxon is discussed and a dichotomous key is provided. We also defined 80 morphological characters and their corresponding states into the Xper database and CAI that could be easily enriched for neighbouring areas and additional taxa.

Reunion Island (Mascarene Archipelago, Indian Ocean) belongs to one of the thirty-four world biod... more Reunion Island (Mascarene Archipelago, Indian Ocean) belongs to one of the thirty-four world biodiversity hotspots. On this island, where approximately 250 species of Pteridophytes were recorded, the presence of Lepisorus schraderi (Mett.) Ching is confirmed for the first time. Only, one population of this fern was located in a mountain forest near the Piton de la Fournaise volcano. As L. schraderi could be confused with L. excavatus (Bory ex Willd.) Ching also present on the island, this paper provides a key to identify correctly L. schraderi and L. excavatus, using morphological characters, as well as cytologic methods.

The rediscovery of a population of Hibiscus fragilis on Reunion Island removes the doubt expressed in the Mascarene about the origin of the species and more its type. This finding confirms that this species is endemic to both Reunion and Mauritius Islands. The presence of this species on Reunion Island would rank it as Critically Endangered in the IUCN Red List for this area, but improves its global status to Endangered. We estimated the size of this population, identified the factors threatening the species and suggested some measures to ensure its conservation.
