The rationale of pre-admission nasal swabbing in directing prophylaxis for orthopaedic patients is discussed. The potential advantage of nasal mupirocin for Staphylococcus aureus and MRSA carriers is described. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis is commented upon as another hazard in orthopaedics. Criteria for choosing glycopeptides in the treatment of implant infections are discussed, and need to be defined in orthopaedic units. Treatment regimens are briefly described.

Regardless of vaccination procedures, little information is available about the pathogenicity and genetic characteristics of the circulating virus in the Egyptian environment. The current study was undertaken to estimate the role of the different inoculation routes in the pathogenicity of NDV. Therefore, induction of the infection was done with NDV-CH-EGYPT-F42-DAKAHLIA-2019 (VNDV) isolated strain in 28 day old white Ross male broiler chicks via intraocular, choanal, intranasal, mixed oculo-nasal routes. Two strains (4%) were isolated from infertile egg,18 strains (12%) from dead in shell embryo ,33 strain(15%) from baby chicks and 2 strains (6.7%%) from hatcheries environment. Extended spectrum beta lactam ( ESBL) production was confirmed in 8 isolates(14.55%) by double disk diffusion test . blaSHV and blaTEM genes were detected in (8/8)and (7/8) of ESBL-P. aeruginosa isolates respectively, whereas none of these isolates harbored, blaOXA and blaCTX-M genes. This study aimed to determine the prevalence, pathological investigation and profiles of virulenc... more This study aimed to determine the prevalence, pathological investigation and profiles of virulence and antibiotic resistance genes in Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (E. coli) isolated from quails. A total of 450 samples were collected from 150 quails (50apparently healthy, 50 diseased and 50 recently dead) for bacterial isolation. The isolated E.coli was tested for antimicrobial susceptibility and was screened for the presence of virulence genes (stx1, stx2, eaeA, and hly) and antibiotic resistance genes (tetAandsul1) using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Seven-day old quails were challenged with E. coli to determine the pathogenicity of the isolated strains. A total number of 93 (20.67%) E. coli isolates were recovered. The most prevalent serogroups O125, O20, and O78. E. coli were highly sensitive to neomycin, norfloxacin, and, colistin, highly resistant to sulphamethoxazole, tetracycline, and amoxicillin.
