The non-invasive and cuffless blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) monitoring device is design... more The non-invasive and cuffless blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) monitoring device is designed to help people to monitor their BP and HR regularly. A Photoplethysmogram (PPG) sensor was used to obtain the PPG signal needed for the BP and HR calculations. The performance of the BP and HR monitoring device was tested based on the accuracy of the readings obtained by comparing readings from the proposed device with the readings obtained by clinical instruments. The factors that are affecting the accuracy of the sensor are also discussed in this paper.

Precipitous depletion of natural resources and exponential population growth are stimulating the ... more Precipitous depletion of natural resources and exponential population growth are stimulating the rapid development of electric power industries. Increased awareness of the global community on the benefits of renewable energy is driving the conventional power grid systems to a new paradigm. Electric power grids are evolving rapidly where incorporation of higher proportion of photovoltaic power generation is observed. The modern grid structure requires contemporary energy management systems for better quality of services. Therefore, prediction is essential for effective energy management and solar energy trading. This paper proposed a Modified Adaptive Response-rate Exponential Smoothing method for predicting photovoltaic power generation for a location near the equator with tropical climate. Four other time series models were used to forecast the photovoltaic power generation for the same location and comparison between the proposed models with those time series models were performed. The results show that the proposed model demonstrates improved performance than the other time series models selected for this study.

Arms detection is one of the fundamental problems in human motion analysis application. The arms ... more Arms detection is one of the fundamental problems in human motion analysis application. The arms are considered as the most challenging body part to be detected since its pose and speed varies in image sequences. Moreover, the arms are usually occluded with other body parts such as the head and torso. In this paper, histogram-based skin colour segmentation is proposed to detect the arms in image sequences. Six different colour spaces namely RGB, rgb, HSI, TSL, SCT and CIELAB are evaluated to determine the best colour space for this segmentation procedure. The evaluation is divided into three categories, which are single colour component, colour without luminance and colour with luminance. The performance is measured using True Positive (TP) and True Negative (TN) on 250 images with manual ground truth. The best colour is selected based on the highest TN value followed by the highest TP value.

A power system operating condition should be stable, meeting various operational criteria, and be... more A power system operating condition should be stable, meeting various operational criteria, and be secured in the event of any credible contingency at any time. However, in the present day, most of the power systems are being operated closer to their stability limits due to economic and environmental constraints. Consequently, the power system networks are at risk to the disturbances that lead to the major blackout or in worst case scenario may cause the grid system totally collapse. Therefore, maintaining a stable and secure operation of power system is very important and challenging issue. In the literature there are a numbers of works proposing a variety of methodologies for conducting the analysis of stability problems. In this paper, the authors use the steady state and dynamic analysis for the stability problem in Sabah Grid System. Several case studies are also presented in this paper to demonstrate the system stability.

The idea of lip reading as a visual technique which people may use to translate lip movement into... more The idea of lip reading as a visual technique which people may use to translate lip movement into phrases without relying on speech itself is fascinating. There are numerous application areas in which lip reading could provide full assistance. Although there may be a downside to using the lip reading system, whether it may range from problems such as time constraint to minor word recognition mistakes, further development of the system should be an active cycle. Ongoing research into improvement of the lip reading system performance by way of suitable choices of feature extraction and classifiers is essential to track the developing trend in both fields of technology as well as in pattern recognition. This paper discusses a short review on the existing methods and classifiers which have been used in previous work in the field of lip reading.

The communication in VANET occurs between Vehicle 2 Vehicle mode and Vehicle to road side unit forming an intelligent transport system. Routing plays an important role in forwarding the required data to the nodes or vehicles. In this paper we investigate the performance evaluation of reactive routing protocols such as AODV and DSR and proactive routing protocols such as OLSR in urban city traffic scenario using SUMO and network performance using NS3 to find an appropriate protocol by using network parameters such as packet delivery ratio, throughput and delay. From the simulations we observed that AODV fared well over other routing protocols in VANET scenarios.
